Our Siemens dishwasher (Model SE24M851) suddenly got stuck at the beginning of its cycle, and would not reset. it just made a horrible grinding noise, and would not fill with water. It was not caused by any of the usual problems - we checked for broken glass and lemon pips in the impellers, and for blocked filters - nothing.
Our solution was to drain the overflow chamber at the very bottom of the machine. it has a float, which is connected via a red rid to a switch. if the float is raised, either because of water in the dishwasher itself, or in the overflow chamber, it will not fill with water.
This would be very sensible, since the overflow cutoff is designed to prevent an internal leak leak flooding the kitchen. however, in our case, any leak was very slow, and had only filled to the point of shutting off the machine after 4 years of virtual daily use...
