Sig V-Crown. 9mm|40S&W|357sig. Outstanding Results ... but only in 2 of the 3 calibers 🤔

There is a minimum fps necessary to bloom those projectiles. Appears to be in 1100 fps or higher and more w/clothing to clean the hollow point out. Good to see you taking the extra time to do testing.

I have a P229 with 40 and 357 barrels as well as a full factory 9mm(Legion) upper with factory optic, from Sig. Mine is a 229 Elite Dark, but it's basically the same platform. Simply stated, 40 beats 9 with good ammunition 95% of the time. It hits harder, better wounding characteristics, and it's BIGGER, with the same velocity. That is difficult to overstate; a fatter, heavier projectile, at the same velocity is hitting HARDER.

Hey man, good video. Love watching your content, especially firearms related. Honestly I believe that 9mm at those speeds wasent trading fast enough to open up, causing the trading straight through the block. I reload and most of my 124gr are traveling around 1100 to 1150fps. Keep up the good work!!

Sig vcrown in 9mm is usually an amazing jhp. I carry them in my p365x right now and am still pretty confident in them. Im actually a game warden and have personally carried the 40sw on my hip for almost 20 years now and I wouldn’t trade it for any other round. We regularly test our Leo ammo and the federal ammo I carry right now is a 180 grain rated at 1100 fps. The ammo is regularly tested by us and I can tell you we get over 1100 fps in our tests or we send it back. For big thick boned animals the 40 is a nice balance of weight and performance with very manageable recoil. The 357 sig is an amazing round and I’d probably take it over the 40 for two legged threats but when it comes to dealing with a big hog that’s been hit by a car I’d go 40 all day. I’m sure the 357 sig would do ok we just prefer the extra grains in those situations. I carry an mp m2.0 with a 5 inch barrel which squeezes some extra performance out of our rounds. I just stumbled upon ur video and I enjoyed it. I’ll definitely watch more!

My EDC is an M&P 40c. I have the .357 sig barrel and the firearm performs better with it. Tragically, the round is so expensive that making the transition is cost-prohibitive because of the rounds of JHP I would need to buy to train with.

There is an important thing to remember about V-crown ammo. The bullet uses a 2 stage expansion that is very sensitive to the physical properties of the lead alloy used. Early V-crown ammunition had poor quality control in the composition of the lead used for the core. Many of the early bullets used an alloy that was too herd, causing unreliable expansion. I bet the 9mm ammo used was quite old, and that a fresh box would do much better. I avoided using V-crown for years due to this problem. Sig seems to have fixed the issue, though they kept it low key.

How long is that 229 barrel? I have the P320 full size in 40 and 357 Sig. My barrels are 4.7 inches. I have those same V-Crowns. I carry it on the deer lease but mostly it sits in the safe. . It's just too easy to carry my micro-9's or a 357 snubby. At the indoor range, there's probably a two-foot fireball at the muzzle when I shoot 357 Sig.

Love all these RU-vid videos showing the 40 still a bad ass. The problem with the 357 sig was that it was too close in performance to the original 40. But, it is a bad ass round for sure. Wish it was more popular as its just a simple barrel swap away.

Why did the 357 sig not pass through like the 9mm? Higher velocity allowed it to open faster and wider. Pretty sure if the 9mm was recovered it wouldn't have been as large. If you like 357 sig, check into 9x25 dillon.

357 Sig is a bit of a different beast. The energy from the extra velocity, with a proper projectile, is on a different level. I have 147gr 357 & 150gr hardcast at 1350fps. That's commercially available 357 Magnum energy.

I feel badly that you feel it necessary to apologize. But on to the calibers---while I do not shoot .40 regularly, I do have one and it is even a striker-fired polymer. And nothing bad to say about it. I do shoot 10mm fairly regularly and will complain to anyone who will listen. Not about the caliber but the ammo. I have heard from a couple people that .357 Sig had fallen in popularity, but your test today made me wonder why. So, of the three calibers tested, why was the (kind of slow) 9 the only round to completely run the gel? Inquiring minds want to know.

I've also tested the 124 sug 9mm standard pressure and all of mine expanded and stopped I think that the factory blemish must also apply that they may be loaded lightly that may be why they were running a 1000 fps.the 115 would have been a more fair comparison 165 in 40 is forward the lighter end and 125 in 357 sig is in the light side there for you would have had a better comparison with the 115

.40 never was a horrible round. In fact, it still "kills & breaks things" pretty nicely. It's just that "9mm bullet development" has reduced .40 to "an answer to a question no longer being asked...''; that costs more & kicks more. .357 Sig is just a "bad ass" round, imho. But, it's more "bad ass" on my wallet than I like... BOTH of which are why 9mm, 147gr Sig V-Crown is my preferred carry ammo, fwiw

@@aboutmyfathersbusiness6907 I think your name should be '.40zealot.' Anyhoo, what your entire argument misses is that .40 was developed to REPLACE 9mm, a lighter recoil, more controllable, more accurate round-- The problem in the 80s (when this 'replacement' started to happen) WAS that 9mm didn't stop bad guys as well as rounds like .45 & 10mm-- the round .40 was developed from. That has since been rectified. If you like .40, then carry it-- 'Murica. But the problems that once existed with '9mm anemia' no longer exist. So, if you want to carry a heavier gun with more expensive ammo, that also puts more recoil into your hand (I know because I USE to carry .40), carry on soldier-- But be sure to train around it. 9mm now offers more rounds in your mag that put down bad guys better than ever before. They also have less recoil & thus better accuracy, and less weighty platforms for "we the people" to have to lug around all day. Facts

You have to read the details of some data points IE like what barrel length was used to generate the data. I looked at the Sig web site and could not find the bbl length. I looked at the Federal LE website and the 357 Sig data was with a 4in bbl. I think the 229 is just shy of that. The Federal data for the 357 sig darn near matches what you got over the chrono. So least that is as advertised in duty length bbl. The expansion is impressive in bare gel. The 357 is definitely under appreciated but with "ammo crisis's" 2 times in the last 10 years or so I suspect that ammo availability, newer technology, and cost have driven LE away from the 357 Sig. The Air Marshalls used to use the 357 Sig. Now I think it is a 9MM Glock of some flavor. Look how many LE agencies dumped the 40 S&W.... Lots of cartridges come on strong and then they wilt like flowers without sun and water. 6.8 SPC 224 Valkyrie

@randyduncan795
@randyduncan795 Год назад
That was some nice 9mm -P-. As far as 40 short & weak goes, it is exactly that compared to the properly loaded 10mm that the ladies at the FBI couldn't handle. I own it but while I find its ballistic performance entirely reasonable, it kicks harder than 45, has less capacity than 9mm, and is loud. Ok it isn't 357 loud but it also doesn't perform like 357. I did the same testing you did but with GDs in Glock compacts (4") and with P226s. I added 45ACP 230 grain GDs in a G21. In the end for EDC I prefer 9mm, 45, 357, and 40 in that order. I can hit most accurately most quickly in that order. All require shot placement for best results. None of them leave me feeling inadequately armed. Thank you for the nice presentation.

This V-Crown is fairly weak .40 S&W. Even basic Speer Gold Dot LE 165 grain performs much better. (1150 FPS, 484 lb/ft). Underwood 155 grain XTP .40 S&W surpasses most 10mm and .357 SIG loadings (1300 FPS, 582 lb/ft).

Your chronograph is not working correctly. The 124 grains go over 1100 fps. I consistently get results over 1150 with a 3 inch barrel. So something is 100% wrong with your chronograph. These are not going 900 fps. Thats just wrong Edit: go watch other tests that completely disprove your results with the 124s. Every single other test ive seen and my own testing have excellent results with them. Its so good its my carry ammo. I dont know what you have going on but something is wrong with your gun or something.
