In this video, I'm sight-reading the first 7 pages of Dolls Dance Ballet by living composer Dmitry Yavtuhovich.
Dmitry is a Belarussian composer based in the US. He studied music theory and composition at the Gomel Music College and at the Belarussian State Conservatory. He has written for string instruments, piano, choir, orchestra and chamber ensembles. His works have been performed worldwide. Some of his pieces can also be found on RU-vid.

I just received your mail with your explanation of this piece. I'm still plugging away at Bach Chorales (two voices, even though each time I try the 3 and 4 voice pieces) as well as Schäffer Opus 45 and Czerny, which I'm trying to approach as sight reading challenges. My piano teacher has remarked at my progress in two months, thanks to your videos and practicing.

I love the "realness" of this - and the text comments along the way are valuable. Also a new composer for me. When I see you glance down at the piano and quickly up again, I understand this to be a skill we're supposed to have, and that it's part of reading music. How to do that must be a skill of itself.

Hi Inge! Thanks for watching. Yes, thank you for recognising that. Some people are shocked when they see me glance down because they think we shouldn't ever look down at the keys but I don't think it's necessarily the case. It largely depends on the piece. And if I'm able to glance down quickly enough without interrupting the flow of the music, then I don't see a problem in looking down.

Yes, due to the many jumps! If it was a piece that stayed in one position, I wouldn't need to look down at all but this one moves all over the place. As long as I'm able to find my spot in the music, I don't see a problem in glancing down.

Of course. You're still young. I've had beginner students that were much older than you and they did fine. Yes, some things may take a bit longer to develop but it's still doable. Your age shouldn't stop you.

Dude...I started at 50...I'm 54 now...and I can play prices by chopin... Schubert..etc. It's hard work...but rewarding. By the time you reach my age...you would be playing for 15 years....can you imagine how good you will be... Good luck
