There is so much fear-based safety misinformation in HEMA. I was always told not to buckler punch because I'd give my opponent a concussion. Then I actually took a full-force buckler punch to the face and found out it didn't even hurt. "There's no safe way to spar with a montante," is another myth I've been skeptical of for some time. Thank you for testing it for us and taking the time to tell us about these beautiful swords!

There is ALOT of fear-based safety misinformation in HEMA! It frustrates the hell out of me. I have been told the same thing about punching with a buckler. Yes, you actually CAN give someone a concussion by punching them in the face or head with a buckler. But as someone who comes from a Muay Thai, FMA, and MMA background, and also trains and competes in Buhurt, i can promise you that you can give someone a concussion just the same by punching them in the face or head with a boxing glove. Getting punched in the face with a buckler while sparring isn't going to be any worse than being punched in the face with a fist. All sparring is going to come with at least SOME risk, if a level of realism is to be maintained. That's just a fact of life that you have to accept in martial arts training. The rules I normally spar under my training partners are simple: Don't hit me any harder than you want me to hit you. And do whatever you like as long as you are OK with me doing it back to you. Me and my partners are all in our 40s or older, and are all experienced martial artist from various backgrounds. We trust each other and are mature enough and experienced enough to spar with minimal "rules" to regulate safety, and in 5 years of training HEMA together, haven't injured each other once, other than bruises and the very rare occasional bloody nose or broken finger.

Im glad there is another to hopefully jumpstart this discussion and give another perspective on the use of these steel trainers and how ultimately they are plenty safe for sparring so long as you aren't an incompetent sparring partner driven by your own ego. Which if you were then you definitely dont need to training this or any other martial art at that point.

My dream is to one day be able to forge my own medieval armor and a light longsword, shaped like theses :) I don't have the skills, the money or the knowledge, but I'll get there. This dream has no particular origin, although it's a concrete one, since I've been thinking about it for years. I've even made sketches of a muscular leather cuirass like the centurions, and the dream also includes a sailing ship. Where to? No fcking idea

I’m a big fan of medieval history, but I tend to focus more on the clothes and don’t really know a thing about swords. I put this on intending to listen to it while I did some embroidery but in the end not a stitch got done because I was so absorbed by the video! I had no idea you could get swords that long (quite alarming to find they’re almost as tall as I am!) I also love the sound quality of your video, just listening to the clash of swords and the crickets made me feel like I was in a castle watching knights duelling in the training grounds. I look forward to seeing more of your videos and learning more!

adding some personal experience with heavier blades. My armoured longsword 1,3m is indeed a bit heavier, around 1,8kg, with diamond shaped crossection and pointy (somewhat unsafe) crossguard and pommel. That being said, I use it in normal historical gambeson (a bit more padded than my arming doublet) and good hema mask, I think a bruise might have been the worst I've suffered. I've also got a two handed 1,8m 2,5kg sword but used it in armour or light sparring, no injuries but we've never tried full speed.

I dont have fear or concern for your safety at all. You are an adult and can do what you like. Moreover, you are a trained and experienced martial artist, and you know what you're doing. Im confident that you have the skill and experience to keep yourself safe when you fight, as well as the maturity and class to accept whatever injuries you may recieve with dignity. If realism is to be maintained, there will always be some level of risk, and that is just a fact that every martial artist must accept when sparring.

@qeter129 Месяц назад
Katana's are the best suited swords for home defence in the current market. A good katana can be purchased around 150$, can be used in one or two hands, is short enough to be used in compact hall ways, is long enough to deal an immediate mortal wound in one strike, and is easy to store. If your being serious a pavese shield is a great follow-up purchase. In the 2022 riots a Dallas store owner defending his store with a cold steel gladius was stoned to death by rioters for a lack of ranged protection. Your never too advanced to get killed by a rock.

I guess that was what I was noticing. It really is beautiful and not at all cumbersome to look at as one might think two-handed would be. However, likely is because you and partner knew what you were doing and thus shows the art form. Why film avoids actual fighting like this is strange. I guess because when it comes to finish an opponent, it's not dynamic or cinematic, but frantic and brutal. I never knew how much a dagger came into play most times if didn't finish with sword.
