The big question is if new Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 Sport OS can really match the sharpness of a prime with a 2.8 zoom lens and offer fast enough AF with strong enough build quality to keep up with the best from Canon & Nikon, so lets find out.

I had the canon 300mm f2.8 is mark1 and own the sigma 120-300mm 2.8 now. The Sigma is not as sharp as the Canon prime. The Bokeh is better on the canon as well. Never the less, the Sigma is for me the better choice in flexibility. I had more keepers and 4x better framing on the sigma in sports and wildlife. Just get the sigma to 1/1250s f2.8-3.5 and „auto ISO“ and every shoot is magic. It’s really as simple as that. Just my 2cents. Keep up the good work

had to choose between the 120-300 sigma and 300 f2.8 canon and a second body. Went with the latter as i believe in redundancy

24-70mm f/2.8, 100mm / 105mm f/2.8, and Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8... A killer system. And I think you might be able to kill someone with the 120-300, too.

I am one of the team photographers for the St. Louis Cardinals and use this as my main lens for shooting in the infield. The sharpness is fantastic, plus the zoom makes it so versatile. I feel for the photographers around me who need to shoot with two cameras for the infield and dugout, while I can do it with one. I was using the Nikon D500 (a crop sensor camera), but now use the D850 and change between full frame and crop mode. Also, this season (2017) I tried the Sigma 2X converter with this lens and was shocked at the sharpness of the images. I thought I might need to do some extra sharpening, but did not. I shoot with the converter on sunny days and stop down 1 stop for improved quality (f/4, which ends up being f/8 due to the 2X). I am very happy with it for my other commercial work as well.

Hi Dan, I've just seen your comment after watching the video. I also own the same combo (D850 + Sigma 120-300) than you, but I'm not sure if I should change anything. How do you feel the AF tracking when the players come straight to you? I think I'm missing too many photos when the players come running to me, most of all at 300mm. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? Thanks in advance!

@@cristiantrujillo4271 Just saw your comment. I switched to Sony and currently use the a1 and 200-600 lens. Sony's autofocus is quite amazing. When shooting a baseball game, only a few frames out of 1000 are out of focus.

I currently use the 150-600mm C on my Nikon D810 and was wanting an additional lens...a prime...but after researching primes this lens seems much better value for money and I'm not restricted with focal length thanks to the zoom and the 2.8 will be great for my wildlife shots. I also have Sigmas Tc1401 which I'm presuming I can use with this. Great video by the way covered everything I needed to know :-)

I love your reviews. Have you considered comparing the Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 OS lens on a full frame camera with the 70-200mm f2.8 on a crop sensor Canon (98-280mm) or Nikon (105-300mm)? I would love to see this comparison.

Would you be able to compare this lens to either of the Canon 300mm f/2.8L primes, and do a side by side comparison, I have seen that the sharpness of this lens is just as sharp as the Canon 300mm f/2.8L IS I, but how does the focus compare, I am into sports, and want fast, and accurate AF, can this lens deliver? Please compare side by side.

Yes, this lens is Rocked !!!!, I don't see anything else at f2.8 that even matches this lens. Canon, yea, love those red flare edges on black edges at 2.8 that don't disappear till you get to 5.6+ that if you put the 2.0 tele on this Sigma, gives you double the range at 5.6 constant 240 - 600 zoom. No one in the industry makes anything this good.

Focus breathing is not a concern for still photography as it is for cinematography. I am not concerned about background "focus breathing" during still shots. If the background took too much of a "breath" changing focus, I'll crop it in post. No biggie. However in video that breathing can be more apparent. Two options: Use cine lenses (more expensive) or use a ever so slight panning motion to distract the viewer of the breathing. I have never heard anyone mention annoying focus breathing coming out after watching a movie or looking at a framed photograph. As far as the Sigma 120-300 lens goes, it's a wonderful piece of glass-sharp and fast focus on my Canon 7Dii at 10 fps in any sporting event. It's a heavy beast though, but I love the zooming factor rather than a prime 300mm.
@sigmaoctantis_nz
@sigmaoctantis_nz 7 лет назад
It is an issue when you effectively have a much shorter lens at closest focus instead of the full 300mm, meaning you're getting less compression, a wider crop and not as much background blur for portraits. The Canon 70-200 II is better than this for portraits because it's actually longer at closest focus, reaching 220mm.

Impressive, looks like an superb lens I already have the canon 300mm f/2.8 ii though I might consider getting this sigma for its flexibility, though I doubt the sigma 's tele converter performance is as good as the 300mm ii (1.4x as sharp as 70-200 ii/ and 2x (f/8) nearly as sharp as my 400 f/5.6) though I'm glad this sigma is getting positive reviews, but by any chance have you tested the af performance in low light conditions? Cause that could be the deal breaker for me......

I didn't have any issues inside the Tampa Bay lightning stadium with most of the lights off before a game with my Canon 5D3. It wasn't really dark but I was shooting at 1600 ISO at f2.8 with about 1/60 second shutter. I'm not sure when I would ever need to shoot in lower light with this type of lens.

Andrés Fuentes Belmar Perfect combination right there. With the crop factor and the image quality of the 7D MK II, the Sigma would be a great lens for this. 300mm is really not far enough for me on a full frame camera so I way prefer this lens on something with a crop factor and the 7D2 is definitely the best crop camera around.
@dvk323
@dvk323 9 лет назад
Andrés Fuentes Belmar If you really want shrap and good contrast photos best choice is Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, but with this Sigma bla-bla-bla is nice but in reality on crop sensor camera you gonna loose much shrapness quality at your photos, dosn't make sense to spend the price as is cost. If you need for wildlife someone 300mm so best choice is prime lenses: Canon 300mm f/4L IS USM, Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS USM

D VK I shoot equestrian sports with both of those lenses, 300mm f/2.8 and 70-200mm f/2.8 on a 7Dll and a 5Dlll and I don't notice any difference in the sharpness between lenses or between cameras. When either body with either lens is on, it is on, and when it is off, it is blurred. Calibration is required. The auto focus is the key with either lens/body combination. This Sigma might let me accomplish the same thing with only one camera rather than two.

@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 лет назад
+JEROME MUNDY Yeah, this would be a huge step up from the lens you have and maybe overkill for the T5i. It would work better with a Canon 7D Mark II but it will still work fine with the T5i. The biggest jump would be overall image quality and the aperture which would allow you to shoot 2 stops lower on your ISO or faster on your shutter speed which could yield massive improvements.

Hello Dane, i need your advice which lens to choose as a walk around one, the sigma 24-105 mm f/4 OR sigma 24-70 mm f/2.8. Thank you :)
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 лет назад
The sigma 24-70 is an older model lens and not quite as good as the new stuff they have. The 24-105mm f4 is MUCH sharper. If you need an f2.8 lens, look at the Tamron 24-70 f2.8 VC which will get you both f2.8 and stabilization which is nice. Or, the Sigma 24-105mm is a great lens. Check out the review: learningcameras.com/reviews/7-lenses/199-sigma-24-105mm-f4-os-review

I actually watched your review about Sigma 24-105mm for three times and each time i watch it i say i definitely am going to buy this lens ..but what stops me is the f/2.8 which i liked in Canon 17-55mm and in Sigma 24-70mm ...! I watched some reviews about Tamron 24-70mm f\2.8 and i liked it too but what i didn't like that it is less sharp than Sigma 24-15mm at the photos' corners !! Can we compare Sigma 24-105 mm f\4 with Canon 17-55mm f\2.8 ? and which one do you think is better for walk around? Thank you, ;)

Some written reviews talk about an autofocus problem when a sprinter / sportsperson is running directly towards the camera? No youtube videos address the query properly. Have you experienced any such problems?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 лет назад
I did not have AF issues though I did not have any sprinters running right at me. That seems like the worst case for any lens...especially if shooting at f2.8 so you better have a great AF system in the camera and it would take a super fast AF motor in the lens. In my tests with other Sigma lenses, the motors are slower than most Canon USM lenses. But like I said, in my shooting, I had no issues. The Sigma lens dock does allow you to customize the focusing and gives you 2 custom focus modes so you can have one setting for fast moving objects and another for more normal moving objects. I'm guessing sigma prioritized accuracy over speed by default if this is a widespread thing...but like I said, you can customize those settings.

What will you suggest for best IQ & focus speed from 400-600mm ? Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 with 2x or the Tamron 150-600 ? By the reviews so far out, the Tamron seems to be the best super tele zoom lens below 5000$ in Canon World !
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 10 лет назад
I would not go with a 2x converter. The 1.4x works well but with a 2x, you can begin introducing softness and focus issues. So if you have to go over 400mm, go with the Tamron. It looks to be a very good lens if you don't need the wide aperture.

LearningCameras.com do you have experience With the sigma 150-500 and is it a gold deal for the low price ?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 9 лет назад
DiePixelkrieger I have not used it yet though I've been wanting to test it. From what I have seen the quality is there, it just doesn't have the wide aperture. You could always put a teleconverter on the 120-300 2.8 which will make it a 168-420mm f4 if you need the wide aperture. The 150-500 might be fine for sports/wildlife in broad daylight but it might be a bit slow on the aperture for night or afternoon sports. However, the low price is awesome.

I was falling in love with this lens but saw a Tony Northrup test that shows horrible focus breathing. from normal portrait distance the Canon 70-200 shows a bigger magnification than this lens at 300mm! have you tested this?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 лет назад
I can't say I tested that but I certainly didn't notice it more than on other lenses. Focus breathing is somewhat normal for photography lenses so if this lens had it, it was not enough for me to care. I would be very surprised if it indeed showed less magnification than the 70-200. But focus breathing happens often for almost every lens...even very high end glass: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tz8lbCrLBEs.html is a good video showing it on the top end Nikon lenses.
@shaolin95
@shaolin95 8 лет назад
+Dan Watson yes focus breathing is not that uncommon but that a 200mm beats a 300mm that is major breathing not something small like my Tamron 70-200 2.8 for example
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 лет назад
I would be extremely surprised if my Sigma at 300mm was less than my 70-200 at 200mm. While I no longer have the Sigma, I have images and it definitely seems that the field of view and compression on the Sigma looks way more than my Canon.
@shaolin95
@shaolin95 8 лет назад
+Dan Watson well that is what Tony showed on his video. another reviewer claims he measured it to be about 247mm when cl at 10feet. why did you get rid of it?
@learningcameras
@learningcameras 8 лет назад
I didn't get rid of it. Feel free to share the video. Sometimes youtube auto marks comments spam if they contain links or certain words though. 247mm at 10ft would definitely not worry me on a 300mm lens although I would agree, that is a fairly large amount of focus breathing if that is indeed true. I'm not sure what I would be shooting that would ever fall in that range. Personally I used it for portraits and wildlife (more its intended purpose) or even sports which would probably take place at least 40+ft from the subject when at 300mm and most of the time way further than that. If it did fall to 247mm at 10ft, I certainly would not have noticed it as I don't think I have ever shot a subject that close with a 300mm lens.

I would rather keep my Nikon 70-200 VR1 for portraits (weighs 2 to 3 lbs less and cost me 800 used), and if i need more reach, i would rather purchase the Sigma 150-600mm Sport for wildlife and sports photography (paid 1900 new) totaling 2700 dollars spent. The 150-600mm Sport is outstanding for wildlife, and it weighs less than that 300mm f/2.8, which is way too short to where you will have to purchase a 2 TC. The 150-600 Sport has all the same features and its weather sealing, build quality is superb (not to mention its optics are fantastic). You can also purchase a 1.4 TC for the 150-600 and get even more reach as you will be max'd with the 300mm. Nice lens, but doesn't fit well for what is currently out and available. JMHO.
