CONCLUSION: SO to wrap up this review, we gave the Sigma 135mm f/1.8 Art series lens a 49/50 and our coveted editors choice award.
THE FINAL WORD: As you can probably tell, I’m a bit over the moon with regard to the Sigma 135mm f/1.8. It’s the kind of lens that can give you goose bumps when you check out it’s results on the big screen. If you’re a working professional portrait or wedding photographer, I’d run out and grab one of these ASAP. Super fast, silent and accurate AF, optics that are so tack sharp that I’m just giddy - it’s also nice to see an AF performance that executes a lenses optics so flawlessly. Seriously, it’s like christmas morning when you were five - yeah, it’s like that…

Great review! I haven't picked up my Nikon 200mm f/2 since I bought this lens. Amazing image quality, more than decent autofocus speed and spot-on focus accuracy.

As you all know already, this new ART 135 is a home run.I think that SIGMA ART is the new king of professional lenses.I’m in love with SIGMA right now. All of my SIGMA ART lenses have been spot on out of the box.I would. Love to see a new ART 70-200 as well as an ART macro.The 135 is absolutely my #1 favorite lens in my long career.Thanks for the tip on the AFswitch.

Darren, Thank you very much for the review. I have this lens for 3 weeks now and i don't want to take it of my D810, it is by far the best 135 I tested ( I test the Nikon and the Zeiss milvus 135mm) it is crazy sharp on the D810 and it nails focus every time. I wish sigma will update their AF algorithms to all the art lens. This is going to be amazing if they will be able to stop the inconsistency in the previous model. I hope someone from the press could contact them and ask for it. FYI , the AF/MF switch is fine on my copy. One minor weaknesses of the lens is at close to MFD where performance are really average at best. At those distance it is soft and low in contrast. I don't care since it is not a macro and I never use 135 at 1 meter. Anyway thanks again for a great review. Yair
@DarrenMiles

Thanks Yair! Not sure how or why the AF on the 135 is so much better than the 85 - I just know it is. This 135 is incredible... Didn't really test the MFD, but now that you mentioned it, I'll take a look.

Got this lens three days ago! I've not yet used it much, so I've yet to experience the AF/MF switch problem. But I have already had a similar problem with the focus limiter button! And it's really annoying when the lens suddenly won’t grab focus because my hand has accidentally pushed this button
@rodneycyr2275

Sigma appears to have fixed the AF/MF switch problem on newer copies of this lens. My lens, purchased in October 2020, does not have this problem. So far I have not accidentally moved either the AF/MF or focus-limiter switches. Darren - excellent review!

I remember awhile back Darren I saw a video of yours relating to the review of the Olympus 35-100 f/2 in a throwback video when I was on the fence on buying a mirrorless system with competent lenses. I regretted not having subbed back then, but glad now I had you as a suggestion to be reminded to do so. Thank you for the reviews you do. I am currently on the fence with this lens and the 70-200mm f/2.8 for portraits.

Just got this lens last week, shot 2 weddings with it, and man I love it! I agree with everything in your review. I must say though that I have not had the problem with the AF switch but I do use spider holster so it might not be rubbing the switch. Mine does feel just as tight as the focus distance switch though.

Great review. My 135 is also superb. Zero focus tuning needed, no misfocus issues at all. I cannot get this accuracy and repeatability from my 200 F2. Mind you, my 200 F2 is excellent, but using a LensAlign calibration device, I notice that successive shots show slight focus plane variations. Not so with the 135 Art. This experience made me purchase the Sigma 85 Art also, although I was a bit worried because of your review (and others) which mentioned focus issues. I was happy to find no issues at all, but the lens needed a tuning of +13. Then it was accurate on all distances. I have the dock, but calibration on the body worked just fine. Fyi, this is all on a D5 body. Testing on the D810 and others is still to be done. I am curious to find out if focus accuracy would be varying with body type.
@troyphillips1077
@troyphillips1077 6 лет назад
dvds59 I have noticed with my d810 I have more focus issues than with my d500. Many more missed shots for sure because the new af system in the d500 and d5 are just that more accurate. But the af fine tune needs more plus and minus adjustments than the d500. I had a d7000 that was even worse in the af department than the d810. It seems each in a ration of Nikon bodies the AF just gets better and better. The D850 seems great and I think the new Mirrorless will be phenomenal and the best af Nikon has ever done.

Hi Darren, I'm looking at this 135mm and an 85mm. The 135mm is too long for studio use, which the 85mm would be perfect for. I'm was mainly looking at the 135mm for outdoor portrait use, maybe shooting wide open on a tripod or once in a while because of the razor-thin depth of field. I did pick up a Sigma 18-35mm last week for my D500 and was very impressed as this is now the best DX lens that I own and is razor sharp and I haven't had any focusing issues with it. This is not the Sigma of old and they have some good glass.

Everybody has there own opinion! I personally think the Nikon135mm f2 DC is amazing, and the Nikon180mm f2.8D lens is even better. However the best portrait lens in the world is the Nikon 300mm or even better the 400mm 2.8 VR lens. As portraits really should be taken at 12-15ft the longer 300 and 400mm primes are ideal and also if you look at the MTF chart of the Nikon 400mm 2.8 you'll see it's an absolutely PERFECT lens optically.

This is the first Dslr Lens that has got a 49 Rating Points from you, and in the past, only three other lenses that got 49 were all from Olympus M4/3. That says a lot about this heavyweight of a lens. It has no AF issues of the 85 Art as well.

I have this af switch on the Sigma 8-16 apsc . I shoot live music and wanted the Super wide 8mm for a band. While in the pit the switch got knocked to manual focus some how. With a super wide lens and tons of crazy light and smoke I didn't notice it was not focusing. Got the pics on my computer and was so sad. A paid gig and no pics to give them . I had pics but not the full band on this big stage . My Nikon 70-200 has this switch problem with the vr switch also. It'll move while in use in crazy low light situations in the heat of the moment. Ruins the shoot

senaritra dutta if you haven’t gotten a lens yet I’d stay away from the 85mm art for several reasons. It (the 85) is sharper . I’ve just seen many reviews complaining about the af . Also it’s bokeh is not as nice as the 135 art. I believe Sigma worked hard on the 135 to create a phenomenal portrait lens with a creamy and softer oof area. The 85 like the 50art , which I do own is more clinical where the foreground and the background very sharp edged. And my 50 art has major af problems.

If you have the budget for the 200, then go for it’. I was just using it less - as awesome as it is, and I still don’t use it that much as I find it impractical - it’s big and unwieldy, always requires a tripod or monopod, handholding can only be tolerated for so long.... but the results……. Amazing!

I've always heard that for portraits, it's best to use something like 50-55mm. But here you talk about 135 and 200(?)mm being used for portraits. Have I been told wrong? I'm curious where I could learn/read the benefits of using 135mm+ as opposed to 50mm for portraits.
@DarrenMiles
@DarrenMiles 7 лет назад
There are no absolutes in photography. Just personal preferences, that said common "portrait" or "headshot" focal lengths USUALLY run between 85-135mm full frame equivalent field of view. - meaning slightly shorter focal lengths on crop sensor cameras.
@prebenlm
@prebenlm 7 лет назад
Right, so since I'm using a 50mm on crop censor camera that is roughly equivalent to 85mm on fullframe I guess. Which is therefor deemed good for portraits? I guess I might've mixed it up with the notion that 50mm gives you the most real world view/eyesight equivalent in the camera world, but does that refer to 50mm on a fullframe camera and it's then the 35mm that gives "eyesight equivalent" on crop censored cameras? I have a Canon 70D with a 50mm F1.8, the pancake lens 24mm STM and both 18-55 and 18-135 kit lenses. I'm looking into maybe getting the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 next, since I want a lens that will work in less light for video purposes.
@troyphillips1077
@troyphillips1077 6 лет назад
prebenlm the 18-35 is my go to lens on my crop body. Especially for the type of video I do. It like all sigma lenses can have focus problems on certain camera bodies. And it’s best to use the center focus points for focus accusation. The outer point are usually different than the center or center cluster of af points. At least on my Nikon bodies. And about 42mm ff is the natural human fov. 50-58 mm portraits, especially 50 can elongate the nose on head shots. Even on your crop sensor camera. So if I were you and shooting 50 mm portraits sit the 50 for full body and half body portraits. It will still distort half body pics too. 85-135 or even up to 300mm is great for head shots . Over 135mm can start to flatten the face though. Learn the focal lengths qualities and use each one to it optimal characteristics. Say if someone has an extra long nose and you want to compress that look for a more pleasing look . You can do a head shot with the 200 or 300 mm lens . Even the 135 can subtly flatten the face . I believe the 75-85 mm range is the human eye perspective of what we naturally see as distortion free in a chest up head shot.

fsahouri I have this same problem with both of my Sigma art lenses. The 18-35 f/1.8 and the 50 f/1.4 art. The 18-35 f/1.8 nails the focus and is pretty fast at af. The 50 is so inconsistent I hate to even use it. Guess I need to sell it .

Isn't colour fringing and chromatic aberration the same thing?

Fast AF: Sigma 135 f/.1.8 or Zeiss Batis 135 f/.2.8: for indoor sport with a new Sony A9 and Sony A7SII...?
@shang-hsienyang1284
@shang-hsienyang1284 7 лет назад
I have no idea how it would perform on the a9, but I have tested the a7 + MC11 + Sigma 135 f/1.8 combo. The AF is accurate, but the speed is quite low. You will not be able to shoot sport with this lens, but it should be capable enough to cover indoor events like weddings.

I had the Nikon 200mm f/2 for several years, but to me it's not the right focal lens for portraits, I prefer the Nikon 300mm f/2.8 or this Sigma 135mm f/1.8 for portraits, yes the Nikon 200mm f/2 is ultra sharp and have a beautiful bokeh but the d.o.f is so shallow that you end up using the lens at f/2.8 so what's the point to pay $5500 for a f/2.0 lens if you don't use it wide open ! I did try the Nikon 135mm f/2 DC for a while but it does have a lot of chromatic aberrations.

hey darren.. i own a 70-200 f2.8 ... shud i go for this lens? or shud i sell my 70-200 and buy this one?

Pratik Doshi wouldn’t sell the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 . Crazy good lenses. With a better (real) look. If you look at Sigma lenses you’ll have a slight cartoonist look.

Thought about just putting a bit of duct tape over that af/mf switch to hinder it from switching all the time? I guess when you would use black duct tape and cut it to the size of the switch it shouldn´t rly be noticeable. Also i dont think you use manual focus only really much on that lens :D

"There's no substitute for cubic inches" Said no car guy ever, I think you mean "There's no replacement for displacement"
@DarrenMiles

Hah! I hadn't heard that one before, but I'd heard there's "no substitute for cubic inches" from car guys for years... Specifically, muscle car guys speaking to things like the 426 Hemi or the Chevy 427... Just sayin'... That said, I do like the "no replacement for displacement."

Get a new copy of the lens because your AF/MF switch is not good. I own it and both switches are the same, none is loose like yours.

You could've bought a Zeiss 135 and been better than all the others. And for portraits it's super easy to manual focus. If you can't manual focus you shouldn't be a photographer. Auto exposure too?

What a ridiculous statement. Photographers have always used advancements in camera technology to get better results. AF is no different. For someone claiming that MF is mandatory, you seem rather clueless on the history of cameras and photography. You want us to go back to the darkroom too? Using the 1-use flashes? How inconvenient do you want us to make photography to be what you want it to be?

This Sigma lens won't fit on the GFX. The Fotodiox adapter will not be able to open the aperture due to the change in design.

What's up phony? You're a hoot. You've been claiming lately that you're pretty much broke. However, you're ordering the GFX 100, a $10k camera that you don't need. Do yourself a favor and cancel the order and use the money to get yourself out of the financial hardship your currently in. Also, can you make a video about the Leica Sl2? Thanks Phony!
