This is the latest 'C' (Contemporary) version of Sigma's very popular 17-70mm lens, with its faster-than-the-kit-lens aperture. I was impressed and disappointed by this lens in different ways - watch this review to see some of its strengths and weaknesses, and whether it could be a good upgrade to your kit lens.

As a primarily landscape & street photographer I'm quite happy with my purchase of two value lenses that covers 17 through 250mm with just a tiny gap at mid-range. I went with the Sigma 17-50 for landscapes and the Canon 55-250 STM for my occasional telephoto shot. I the end though it's the Sigma 17-50 lens where I feel I get really outstanding results. This Sigma lens is the one to buy!

Just purchased this lens yesterday. Everything is fine except two things. 1. No manual override in autofocus mode 2. Focusing ring rotates externally, so one has to be careful while hand handling the camera. Otherwise it's a very good lens with sharp, beautiful photos at all focal lengths. Dynamic range is also good.

The comparison at the end of the video was extremely helpful as I was on the fence for both lenses. I am only interested in stills, and low-light/sharpness is my game, so the 17-50mm will be my choice. Thank you so much for the impeccable review as always!

@Matata Lui Negative, you will need an EF-EOS R mount adapter I believe. I could be wrong, but I have one on my EF-S camera right now.

Now 10 years later I guess an updated version of this lens will be great and I would probably buy that. A new version probably needs to be updated in pretty much every single way. I would like to see the zoom range to be updated to 17-85mm to have slightly better range. Also the autofocus and image stabilizer should be upgraded a little to make it also a nice option for video making. for aperture I prefer to have something like F3.5 constant aperture instead of a higher aperture in the widest angle. And of course the all important image quality needs to be nicer in every way. especially in the corners. For all this upgrades to work I still like to have the macro features but a little less of that is no problem if that makes it easier. As long as close up focus is really good it will be worth it. It is a little long explanation but I am definitely interested in an updated version of this lens or something quite similar

Sigma should redesign their old 17-50 f2.8 based on this contemporary appearance. That is a very good lens, but the gold accent in 2020 looks super tacky.

What? The sharpen of 17-70 Contemporany is very more best than 17-50 EX. The macro of 17-70 is awesome! Even so good video. Congratulations!

Thanks for putting this together. Looks like I made the right choice by getting the Sigma 30mm 1.4 Art lens for my Pentax K5IIs. (Thanks to your review.) I've had it for a week and although I'm still getting used to the focal length I'm very happy with it. I love the build & image quality, wide aperture, and especially the full time maximal focus. Makes switching from AF photo to MF video totally seamless. (K5IIs doesn't AF during video recording, so I get the one shot AF and don't have to change focus modes thereafter.) The lack of OS is not an issue since it is in body on Pentax. Thanks again!

why one should prefer 17-50 f.28 over 17-70 f2.8 when price is same for both of these lenses? 20mm more on 17-70mm and that too on same price is a good choice ? what is your suggestion?

Trust me the sharpness of the 17-50 2.8 it's excellent, and you still have 2.8 to the 50mm as well.

Great video, thanks! I just got this lense. I'm going to use it as a handy and fun multifunctional lense because I like to walk around and take pics of different things, it is my first lense if I don't count my kit lense. Not too big or heavy but kit lense is of course much lighter and weaker. It seems that it is significantly better as a macro lense and the auto focus is very fast compared to the kit lense. Probably a bit sharper too and there is definitely more light though it isn't the brightest lense out there as this video shows. 72 mm filters aren't quite cheap. Overall I'm happy with this, but as mentioned consider Sigma's 17 - 50 mm for example. I bought this since it is a moderate macro and has a wider zoom.

AF is also much noisier than in my kit lense, but if I shoot video I use manual focus. Wouldn't call it silent as he says in this video, but maybe there are individual differences too.

I got the Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 OS Macro 'C' to replace Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM as it's about the same size even though it's twice the weight, I feel this lens is more of a "kit lens replacement" than a contender to the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 OS Macro 'C' lens + NIKON Z50 + NIKON FTZ = AMAZING! AF SPEED VERY FAST & support EYE AF, and provide OS and it is essentially a 24-105mm equivalent lens on full frame. HAPPY it CAN BE USE ON YEAR 2020!

i owned the first iteration of the 17-70. was not mega sharp but did reasonably the job. And it was super small and light. I bought a tamron 18-50 stabilized which i found too noisy and went back to my trusty old sigma. No stabilization, no HSM motor, but could do so many things...

I have been watching many of your reviews, and it won't make it easier. The reviews are great and love watching them. The camera i use is little old, the 400D. For quite some time i have used the Sigma 18-200mm and found out that portait is what i like most. Shooting close ups indoors from my family. But as i noticed, and you confirmed it in review of this lens, the quality is not the best. So i have made up my mind to get some new glass. this Sigma 17-70mm C version was on my mind and hoping that you did a review on it and it came out like GREAT LENS. But damn its not the same as you said with the 17-50mm Sigma ( highly recommended ) For the telezoom i have in my mind the 70-200mm F4 L lens Canon. The one without IS is, i guess, a nice step into great telezoom glass. Here are some of my choices, maybe you can clear up my mind a little Sigma 17-70mm 2.8-4 Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 Canon 15-85mm 3.5-5.6 Or should i go for Canon 24-70mm L f/4 Sigma 24-70mm F/2.8 Thnx in advance

Don't go for the 24-70 lenses. I'd go for the Sigma 17-50 if you want great pictures of your kids :-)

familie Veendorp The 24-105 is nice, but it only lets in half the amount of light, and because it starts at 24mm you'll miss out on those wide angles

Christopher Frost Photography Few months later i have upgraded some of my stuff. As you adviced me to get the 17-50 sigma i bought this one. Upgraded to a 50d and the nice 70-200 F4 L. Pictures are stunning, but i have a gap between both of the lenses. As i have seen your 24-70 L 2.8 version1 i was not impressed by it. even read the comments on that review. Now is the question what do you recommend for the hole between the 17-50 sigma 2.8 and the 70-200 L ?

I like the focal length, but I put this lense in flickr to see shots and was dissapointed, so I'm not sure I will be getting it. It doesn't look good for portraits, but looks nice for other things.

Purchased this lens in June 2021 for my xt3. Still waiting for it to arrive. I hope the AF would be good enough for video shooting. Compared to fujifilm 16-80 f4, it's way cheaper($250US on Ebay), and has wider aperture.

I bought this 6 months ago. The zoom ring is really stiff at first but after a few months it has become too loose. If I tilt my camera downward the lens zooms out by itself. They should have put a lock on it.

I don't find the pint of putting a 2.8-4 aperture. Yes, it allows more light but it kills the lens for video. I would feather have it f4 than the variable areature. Sigma should have made this lens better as it could have been the canon 24-105 f4 of pas-c cameras. Christopher, wouldn't you have rather such a lens?

I've bought this lens as a kit lens replacement for my Nikon D3100 and i must say i couldn't have bought a better lens for that body. it really allows the sensor to work at full capacity and it's plenty sharp for people who don't pixel peep. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to step up from their kit lens.

hey Christopher, how is the autofocus of this lens on your 70D? I have the non-contemporary version and my lens consistently front focuses. I had to do a +20 micro-adjustment (which is the maximum amount allowed) on my 70D and it is still slightly front focusing. Have you had this problem with your copy?

What I don't like about some Sigma lenses, is, the whole focus ring spins when focusing, instead of having a window, seeing that it's focusing internally, like the Nikon lenses. What happens is, when you are gripping the lens, if you have hold of the focus ring with your fingers, it doesn't spin or focus properly. Just my opinion, that's all.

Hi, comparing only the sharpness of this lens with the canon 18-135, wich one would you recomend? I believe the difference of the amount of light can be a challenge but does the quality of the sigma lens tops the canon?

How does the autofocus motor sound compare to the sigma 18-35 1.8? They look pretty similar so I’m hoping it’s about the same. I just ordered this lens and will be using it for vlogging with a shotgun mic. I hope the autofocus isn’t too loud for vlogging

What would you recommend Christoper, the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 or the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 "C". I love the 2.8 on the 17-50mm (especially since I shoot weddings) but what do you think about image quality in the comparison. Is it worth the fixed 2.8? I watched your videos on both but still torn. How is it with real world situation on a daily or close to daily basis? Thank you, love your reviews!

What would happen if I tried to use this for a full frame camera? Or would it not work at all?

It would fit on, but you would get very strong vignetting around the edges, so you would have to crop your images

Nice review as usual. However opinions on whether its good for video or not are of course subjective. If the shots are well planned, and focusing is done manually, those issues you mention as not suitable for video become irrelevant. It's a videographer/cinematographer's choice how to adapt to certain tools while knowing their limitations. I chose this lens for travel videos and see absolutely no issues with the limitations that you mentioned. Ironically I bought it exactly for the "flaws" that you mentioned here, so thank you again for the detailed information. This really helped me.

I have this lens and have got some pleasing results but im now thinking of upgrading it (I have a 70D). Do you think the Canon 24-105L is an upgrade over this lens? Im not worried about the wide end on an APS-C as I also have a UWA lens. DXOmark shows that this lens is a little sharper than the 24-105L

Hey could you please advise between the 6 or 7 different fast 17-50/55/70s & 50-100/135/150 from Tamron/Tokina/Sigma/Canon: I'm adapting to m43 & Sony but may be switching from Sony to Fuji. On m43 it seems Sigma tends to work better(compatibility/AF wise) and the OS isn't a huge problem as it won't work with ibis so needs to be switched off anyways: so Tamron non VC "12-36mm f2" or Sigma OS "12-36mm f2" or "12-50mm f2-2.8" & Sigma HSM "35-110mm f2"(if I don't want to go with pricier options). But on Sony & more particularly Fuji having better OS might be helpful for video: on the a7RII shooting 4k is best in super35 mode & with Sigma(& maybe Tamron) could possibly give dual IS but on a Fuji X-T3 I'd be getting 4 stops of OS for video(which would be incredibly handy) - then again I could also just use better full frame lenses & a speedbooster to get "17-50mm & 50-140mm f2" respectively. Is this really a choice between better OS in video & better IQ or is there a clear winner here? I know Fuji has the awesome XF 50-140mm f2.8 R OIS WR but the 16-55mm f2.8 is lacking the feature.

Thanks for the review Chris. I've been watching a few of your videos recently but they're still leaving me a bit undecided on which lens to buy. I'm considering purchasing this Sigma 17-70 as an upgrade from my 18-55 kit lens for my Canon 600D. I'm also looking at the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 Art as an upgrade from my Canon 50mm f/1.8 II. Basically, I'm going to Rome for a week in July and would love to take some awesome photos whilst I'm there. I was also looking into the Sigma 18-35 f/1.8 as a compromise instead of getting the other 2 Sigma lenses as previously mentioned, however, you did state in your review that is was really big and heavy and wouldn't be suitable for travelling. What would your suggestions be?

Well, you can still take the 18-35 traveling with you - it's just a bit big and heavy for a lens with such a small zoom range. The Canon 15-85 might be a nice bet because of its awesome zoom range. Take the 50mm 1.8 with you for some more arty shots with blurry backgrounds. Should be a good combination :-)

Kevin Wong Personally I'd go for the Canon, as neither lens really gives you a narrow depth of field at their maximum apertures, so might as well get the much nicer Canon lens for your 'flat' photography, and a fast 50mm or 30mm for your more arty pics :-)

Thank you for that review. I was surprised as you complain about sharpness. According to lab tests and reviews the 17-70 lens should be sharper than all the other standard zoom lenses. But maybe it performs better on a Nikon camera?

Try getting a Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM, and buying a cheap extension tube to go with it for macro work

The Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 seems like a nice step up from the standard kit lens. Pity the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 doesn't have image stabilization. However, the sharpness of the lens and the extra wide F stop are very tempting....

What would you recommend for something that has a good range like this with good f stop but better for videos? In terms of more quiet AF. I have a 17-55 but it’s very noisy

I mainly work on still photography, so a stiffer focus ring is what I'm used to back when I shot with film cameras.

Awesome review! One question to help me with if you can :D. Sigma 17-50 or Nikon 16-85? Sigma allows more light but Nikon has a longer focal range.

I think the sharpness is comparable but the IS and usability is far better on the Canon

Dear Christopher, how often missed the af on your 17-70? I had big problems with 3 lenses. The fourth is the best, but it was at sigma to re adjustment. From 10 to 15 pictures misses the af on 3 to five pictures. Only 3 pictures are perfect sharp. The rest is ok... Best greetings.

I tested a sigma 17-70 Contemporary at the Photokina 2018 on my Sony camera. Every picture in all ranges at the open appertures 2.8 and 4 was perfect. I orderd 3 pieces and everyone was a piece of sh.t. Unsharp and the autofocus was like playing bingo. The third one gets re adjusted.

hello Chris im not sure if i should go for this and sell my sigma 17-50mm F2.8 which i purchased from your recommendation and i loved it but im not sure if this lens will be more handy then that. What do you recommend? I have a telephoto and a 50mm 1.8-i plan on buying an sigma art when i can afford one but i want to purchase a macro lens and if this has it with it i think its a good solution. Please let me know! If your looking for a cheap full frame camera go for a early model canon 1D i just ordered my 1D mark ii N for around 500. Thanks for all the videos and keep up the great work!

I've owned this lens (the Sigma 17-70 f2.8/4 "C") over the past two years. I do enjoy the extra zoom and the macro capabilities are pretty good, however it lacks a bit in sharpness and since I do use it to shoot some videos, the variable aperture is a bit annoying. I'm thinking about trading it for a Sigma 17-60 f2.8. Do you think that is a good choice or do you recommend another lens?

Yes, I meant the 17-50 f2.8, sorry. I've bought the Sigma 17-70 "C" based off of your review, but lately I've been thinking it's quite lacking in sharpness, I'll miss the macro capabilities and the extra zoom, but I'll probably upgrade to the 17-50 in the next few months.

How's the lens autofocus in video mode? Do you personally feel annoying about the autofocus noises in video?

I believe this one is probably for @Christopher Frost Photography, but in my experience the autofocus in video isn't that noisy but ti can be a bit troublesome if you're shooting indoors in low light situations, the autofocus will every once in a while loose focus and start searching for your subject. For video work I prefer the Sigma 17-50 f2.8. The 17-70 C is better for travel photography and for macro shots.

For serious wedding photography you should invest in a full-frame camera. But for casual work, as I say at the end of this video, personally I'd go for the 17-50

I've been considering this lens for a while now as a replacement for the standard kit lens. I've also been looking at its cousin the 24-70. I can't really decide on which one so what would you suggest? I'm using the Canon 60D.

What do you guys think that are must have lensen for APS-C sensors? I got 50mm f1.8 AF-D, 35mm f1.8 AF-S, 18-55mm kit lens and recently got the Samyang 14mm f2.8. My next lens I'd like to be a zoom, ideally 70-200 f2.8 lol, but not gonna pay €1000, what other good alternative is there? And is there something like a 24-70 ? Nice all around walk lens?

Hmmm okey, thanks, I'll look into it. One which is a bit more light sensitive sould be nice, but thats like much more expensive.
