I owned this lens for Canon EF-S. Optically it was stunning, no complaints. Focus wise, well you know the sad game with Sigma lenses on Canon DSLRs. I adapted it to Canon EF-M and focus accuracy was great. I loved it. For the weight and volume, though, it's hard to justify over a FF 24-70mm f/2.8 zoom lens.
Great review! To the point but provided all the relevant context & details. Also appreciated that some of the video itself was shot on the lense, particularly since I'm looking at this lense for use on RU-vid. Thank you!
I have to agree with you on this. I'm shooting on Nikon. Occasionally I shoot video and have been more than pleased with it's performance. I mostly shoot Product, Editorial and Portrait and the SIGMA almost never leaves my camera. The only time it does if I feel like shooting with my 50 or I'm shooting Drag Racing, in which case I grab my Sigma 150-600 Sport. The 18-35 though is one of the best purchases I've made for my rig. Great Review by the way.
Just bought this lens for my c100 mark ii. I don't care about continuous autofocus while filming talking head. Simply set one-shot AF to stand in front of the c100 and use a wifi tablet to set one-shot AF and record. If you set it to f4 you can move around and focus will be sharp. No need be in the auto-focus box. With one shot AF, the lens will remain silent. I do this for canons 50mm 1.8. Lens focus noise really means squat for cinema cameras lol.
I don't ever use the stock mic but you will hear it using the stock mic as well. You only hear it while it is trying to focus, once it has focus it's pretty silent. It isn't very loud though either. Thanks!
Hiii, great review, I have Canon M50 Mark 2, Does it work well with this lens? Is there any autofocus issue with this and m50 mark 2? And also, I was also trying to get the Viltrox 23mm f1.4 lens primarily due to my low budget😢, pls give me a suggestion, should I invest with some extra effort in this art lens? (I'm just an extremely passionate still photographer, I don't do any paid works like wedding or event shooting)
Thank you! I have not used this lens with the Canon M50 Mark 2 so I don't know about any autofocus issues. This lens would work well with the M50 but you would need an adapter to mount it to the camera...it is also very heavy and will feel very front heavy on the front of the small M50 body.
@@ScooterMediaVideos thanks for replying, yes the weight is another concern for me, as the M50 Mark 2 is really small and light, in comparison to which the Sigma is huge 🥺, Probably I'll go with the Viltrox lens. Pls if possible in future give us a review of Viltrox 23mm f1.4 lens in Canon EF-M body ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for the information. I have a Nikon z30 camera and I’m looking to upgrade to this lens. I’m looking to buy one with the ftz adapter. Would you recommend for lifestyle content ?
No problem! Yes this would be a good lens for lifestyle content...this lens is great for just about any kind of content. I use it probably 90% of the time. 👍
Thank you! I used the Canon R6 and shot pretty much everything wide open at f1.8. Depending on the shot it will be anywhere between 18mm and 35mm. Thanks for watching!
Thanks! The Canon R8 is a full-frame camera and this lens is made for aps-c camera bodies but it will still work on the Canon R8 in crop mode. I use it with my full-frame R6 and it works great and provides beautiful images.
Amazing review! But I have a question, I bought this lens and Im using it for my m50 with viltrox speed booster and I have a very noticeable vignette from 18-25m. Do you have any solution to use this lens 18-35 without any vignette? Should I change my speed booster to the regular one EF-EOS M? Any advice? Thank you in advance!
Thank you! I believe the speed booster is to provide you with a more full-frame field of view and because the lens is not full-frame, you are getting the vignetting. I believe if you use the regular EF-EOS M adapter it should fix the problem.
I assume you use the Sigma with a crop mode on the R6 and with an adapter on the R7. If that is the case, then which one do you prefer? Also, do you get overheating issues with the R6?
I use the Sigma with an adapter on the R6 and R7, and yes the R6 automatically crops in when the lens is mounted. I have not had any issues with overheating with the R6 or R7 although they will both overheat under certain circumstances. I prefer the look of the R6 with the Sigma 18-35.
Great work. Is this lense worth on the Sony zv e10 with 7artisan adapter or should I go with the Sigma 28-50 2.8?....(pros for the adapter is more lenses and much more cheaper). Hope to hear from you :)
I believe the Sony ZV E10 is an e-mount, aps-c camera so you could just buy the e-mount version of this lens and no need for an adapter. I still love this lens and use it probably 90-95% of the time on my videos.
@@ScooterMediaVideosthank you a bunch for your reply. Well the E mount I did not find anywhere (EU)but the ones for Canon go for like 390 Euros used(max 1 year old) + Adaptor (49 Euros).
Beautiful video❤❤❤❤id love to know if you would recommend this lense for a canon DSRL....hear people say it has a bad focus and the images dont come out sharp..(i use a canon 200D)
Thank you! I would recommend this lens for a Canon dslr. I have heard about focus issues as well but have used mine on a dslr and it worked fine. If you happen to run into any focus issues you can purchase the Sigma USB Dock to fine tune the focus.
Glad to see it's still relevant after all this time. Thanks for the video. I've been contemplating getting this but not sure. I have a Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 on MFT with a 0.71 speedbooster which is lighter, has stabilisation, and is cheaper (if you have to buy it). I don't usually need a really shallow depth of field but I'm wanting to do more B Roll where that would be more useful. I know that the extra 1.33 stops of light would make the 15-35mm far better in low light and gives better background blur, and that, being an ART lens it has better optics and should be clearer/sharper - but what percentage of the time do you use it wide open and does the increase in sharpness stand out in videos? If you had the 17-50mm would you still consider getting the 18-35mm?
Hello, I actually use the 18-35 wide open at f1.8 probably 95% of the time. It is really sharp and it does stand out in videos. I would probably still look at the 18-35 even if I had the 17-50...I'd probably then only use the 17-50 if I need the reach from 35mm to 50mm.
I guess it depends on how "stiff" it is, if it is a relatively new lens the rings are always a little stiff until they get worked in...however it should still turn pretty easily.
I want to use Sigma 18-35mm on Canon R8 with RF lens adopter. Is there any chance to face vignetting issue in 18mm or 20mm? any difficulties to record in 1080 in 60fps?
The Sigma 18-35mm will work fine on the R8 as long as there's crop mode on it, which I believe there is. I use it with my R6 all the time and have no issues with vignetting or 4k/1080p in 60fps.
I have Sony A6500, is there different adapters that works to have the sigma? If so, wich adapter do you recommend and will the auto-focus performance of the sigma lens will change depending on the adapter? Thank you!
If you own the RF 24-70 2.8, that's a great all around lens for full-frame and you probably don't need the Sigma. The Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 is great for APS-C bodies, and produces an amazing image with a very shallow depth of field.
I was wondering whether made a mistake by buying mine and agree with your points. My only gripe with it is zoom range, but I believe that that's the price you pay for its large aperture.
Hello. I am very new to photography and mainly doing it for hobby. Been using the kit lens 16-50mm and thinking about picking up a different lens that has lower aperture for better performance in low light. When you said it boast 1.8 aperture throughout zooming, does it means that this lens have fix 1.8 aperture?
Thank you for the review. Can I use it with my Canon M50 Mark ii? And Could you please suggest me some lens for event photography? All I want is best photo quality.
You can use it with the M50 Mark II with an EF-m adapter. You can then use any EF lenses with the M50 as well. As far as lenses for event photography, I would look at lenses with an aperture of f2.8 or less.
@@nayemMmm the Sigma 18-35 is a beast of a lens, it's long and it's heavy and when you add the adapter it is even longer, and with with the M50 is going to be extremely front heavy. The Sigma 30mm is much more compact and doesn't require the adapter so it will feel better with the small body of the M50 and will provide nice photographs as well, and is alot cheaper...I would probably go with the 30mm.
Quick question.. I just bought this lens for my Canon M50. I bought the Pentak K Mount & attached it to the ef m adapter in order for it to fit on my M50. Now my Camera wont focus, change aperture, and is pretty blurry with this setup. Do you have an suggestions on how I can fix this issue or w if I even bought the right adapter setup? I really looking forward to using this, don't want my $400 to go to waste 👎🏽
@@dee.ow3ns so it sounds like you are using 2 adapters to get it from a Pentax K mount to eos-m. There must be some sort of connection issue with one of the adapters or it isn't happy with using 2 adapters. You might need to get 1 adapter that goes from pentax k to eos m and that will hopefully solve the issue.
This is still a great lens in 2024 but might not be the best for the M50...you would need an adapter and the lens is extremely heavy so would be very front heavy on that small body.
Thanks for the awesome content. Everything looks so crispy. Excellent , work! Do you feel the same about the 18-35 when it comes to getting it in 2023? Aw and BTW the BROLL looks stunning.
@@ScooterMediaVideos Thank you for this review. I see people advocating for the new Sony Fx30, but I'll likely get this lens and stick to Canon, as I feel they are much more user-friendly with the menus, flip screen, and everything. Plus, the BROLL I see on your video is so crispy it would likely be an overkill for the subs on all my channels. Thank you for the amazing work. And I wish you a happy and prosperous 2023! You have a new sub! Stay Safe!
@@potbtech i have been using Canon my whole life and have been happy with the products. Thanks so much for the comment and I wish you a happy new year as well! Cheers!
goodnight Mr. Clarke how you're doing i have a question to ask you i haven't used the video yet on my 80d but eventually i will so you said this lens is good for shooting video well what about taking pictures with it. i been hearing a lot about this sigma 18-35 and i wanted to get one for myself. i bought the canon 80d and it came with no lenses so i went and bought the 16-35 mark 2 L series lens and the 50mm 1.8 lens and they're pretty good but i want to get the 35mm 1.4L mark 2 and the 24mm 2.8 55-250 and the 15-85 would that be a good selection for my canon 80d
Hello, the lens is good for pictures as well, I just don't take alot of photos. If you already have the 16-35, you already have a 24mm f2.8 and a 35mm f2.8 so I would just get something like the 24-70mm f2.8. You've then got everything in the range from 16-70mm at an f2.8. If you need another longer lens you could get the 70-200 f2.8 and then you're covered from 16mm to 200mm. The Sigma 18-35 f1.8 is a great lens but if you already own the 16-35mm, I'm not sure it makes sense to spend money on the same focal range...but totally up to you.
@@ScooterMediaVideos hey Scott I love your video and I have a few questions what you think about the 15-85 and 55-250 I'm trying to stay in my budget I'm not rich and I want the best but I'm not rich like that I do this as a hobby. my mother told me the 70-200 or the 55-250 is all I need and she have the 18-35 from sigma and the picture quality is amazing. I want the 24mm f2.8 pancake lens and I want the canon 35mm 1.4L mark2 I have the canon 90d so I need like a few lenses nothing major I'm not kicking that kind of money I need to stay in my league. I got my canon 90d with no lens so I need some lens that can cover what I need them for.
@@crayshaunhenderson1265 if you can afford the Canon 24-70, I would get that or the Sigma. Same for the 70-200, I would go for the Canon if it's in your budget range.
@@chiefbubba2581 the one thing I will mention for someone starting out is that the lenses are more important then the camera. The lens is what gives you the better image quality over the camera. Obviously you can only get what's in your budget range, but I would look into something like the Canon 24-70 f2.8. You can probably find one used and it is an amazing lens with a good focal range. If you have access to the Sigma 18-35, and get the 24-70 you are covered from 18mm to 70mm, and then could save up for the 70-200mm. All of the lenses that you mentioned will get the job done, but the 15-85, 55-250 and 24mm pancake are kind of budget lenses and the 35mm f1.4 is extremely expensive. I would just say get whatever you can afford to start creating! I started out with budget lenses and have slowly upgraded my collection.
Yesterday I received the adapter for ef - eos r and mounted this lens on my canon eos r8 without any viniating at 18 mm or 35 mm. I was so glad i didn't have to change it because i was happy with that lens when i used it on my eos 250d. Really fast and sharp lens that I highly recommend for photography and not least videography.
Thanks for the great review! I have an R6 as well. Will it automatically go into crop mode when attaching, or do I have to enter the menu system and change it manually? Thanks!
I'm in Canada, just grabbed one that looks brand new (aside from a scratch on the plastic window for numbers) that has the original box, and plastic bag/desiccant for $500, I was on the fence since I don't know if I'll be able to fix the camera I have coming in, but sounds like I got a good deal on it! Still diving into cinematography and lenses and all this so lots to pick up on still lol
Hello Mate! I currently got Nikon D7500 Cam with 18-140 Nikon Lens but I wanted to get Sigma 18-35mm f1.8. My only concern is whether this lens fits my cam perfectly, please advise!
Thank you! They are comparable but this lens is not a full frame lens and therefore crops in so it isn't as wide as the Canon 16-35mm. The aperture goes down to 1.8 on the Sigma and only 2.8 on the Canon.
Thinking about getting the canon R7 would this be a good lens for it? Of note, I’m a beginner…is the lens easy to use? Thank you for the great videos!!!
I'm looking to buy this lens for my Canon R10. I've heard about the autofocus issues it has, but I've never heard of autofocus issues on mirrorless cameras. I wonder if it would work well on my R10 without the need of calibration? I really don't want to buy another piece of hardware to fix something I pay $700 for.
My next video is lens options for the Canon R7 and R10 and this is my number 1 recommendation. I have also heard about autofocus issues but have used mine for a few years now on my R6 and R7 and have had no issues.
Regarding the autofocus I had some problems too but after intens AF callibration it works now. Cost me several days but now I have found the right valuas. Ok it misses sometimes but this goes for every lens on a dslr.
Wow, just out of curiousosity was it shooting video or photos or both that the autofocus didn't work very well? I've heard so many people say the same thing. I mainly do video work and the autofocus works really well usually...it misses sometimes but not often. Did you use the Sigma usb dock to calibrate it?
@@ScooterMediaVideos I only shoot photos and indeed I used the USB dock so you can callibrate the lens for several focal lenghts and distances. And all valuas entered are different. It is a trial and error proces so take a few days off before you start with the callibration 😄
Thanks for the review. I have the R6 and use EF lenses with an adapter. I just started looking for a wide angle fast lens. This sound perfect. Won't break the bank and less than 1000 CAD is even better. I just found my new lens.
@@ScooterMediaVideos The cost of the new RF lenses is insane.. I would love to have some but there s only so much money to go around. Looks like a great one. Are there any issues with the camera being full frame?
@@BrianSmithCanman I hear ya! The R6 has an automatic crop mode so as soon as you put this lens on, the camera crops in and there's no issues with it. There's no vignetting and you can use the whole focal range...I use this combination probably 95% of the time for all of my RU-vid videos and commercial video work and I do own multiple other lenses!
I have heard of Sigma lenses having focusing issues and I think the best way to fix it is to get the Sigma USB Dock and that will allow you to calibrate the lens and update any firmware. This should help to fix the focusing issues.
Granted its excellent image quality and constant f1.8 aperture, it's still a fair amount of money for a lens with no image stabilization (the Tamron 35mm f1.8 has it), no weather sealing, and dubious autofocus performance for still photography. I'd love to be able to buy this lens for my Canon 90D: as you say, it's three important focal lengths (18, 24, and 35mm) at f1.8 in the one lens, but its poor autofocus reputation disuades me from buying it.
I hear you, it is a fair bit of money with no image stabilization. I am not someone who uses image stabilization that much and I don't really do photography a whole lot, but the autofocus for video has been great.
@@ScooterMediaVideos Totally agree. I'm mainly a stills photographer, who is slowly getting into video. The lack of image stabilization would be the least of my worries at its focal length, but they could have thrown in some form of weather sealing. Plus the apparent autofocus issues, which are a dealbreaker for me. Maybe I'm being too demanding though.
It is the Canon EF to R adapter with built in ND Filter to attach EF and EF-S lenses to my Canon R6. I made a video about it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_WWN461sR5Y.html
Good question! I know here in Canada there are a ton of second hand ones for sale and the cheapest I think I have seen is around $600-$650 and they go for $1000 new.
