Hope to see powerful successor to A6600 in 2022 now that Sony finally ready to unleash the a7 IV. APS-C people needs some love too, Sony or they will jump to Nikon ZFC and Fuji soon.

I dont know if we have to say it is “Saved” Their camera line is excellent and while it may not have the same body tech as Fuji (right now) they have way more lens availability and third party accessory support. Sony built this category and I doubt they will be the ones to lose it.

@@dubenick I'm a Sony aps-c owner and I literally hope they lose their own line. Their business model and handling is utter bullshit, from the color science to horrible menus and their remote app/mobile app is simply abysmal. The cameras struggle with some incredibly trivial, basic tasks which one would take for granted. And all that is topped by either crappy native lens, or overpriced Zeiss-tagged lenses. Naturally, no OSS on any third party lenses which are actually worth their money and not overpriced. So yeah.. not seeing a lot of reasons to stick with them, especially considering how Sony is infamous for dropping support, changing their ways at the first sign of profit going down. They've become a really shitty company in the last decade or so.

Just got my Sony A6700 and I ordered this lense to go with it because of your review. Wow this lense is truly capable and it fits so nicely with an APS-C camera. It's crisp, the bokeh is amazing, it's quiet, its autofocus is fast. It's such a fantastic value and I can't recommend it enough.

@@Lana.USA. That is partially because of the lens not adapting as well as others and also because of the older focusing system on your a6500. Newer cameras like the a6100, a6400, a6600, A7c, A9 I/II, A7R IV, and A1 all focus much better with adapted lenses.

The 18-50 is pretty cool…. I got my 18-35 f1.8 and mc-11 combo last year and it is no joke either…. One of the few lenses that has produced extremely sharp images corner to corner, comes in handy when cropping. Also can be used on a gimbal since it doesn’t extend. Rarely comes off my a6000 and awesome for indoor event shoots and almost everything else haha… but will def be looking into this as its a great travel lens.

Just bought Sony A6700 with this lens, and must say, I`m so impressed! Compact, portable, and the constant f/2,8 is an "eye-opener", to say the least, literally, compared to my nine years old A6000/Sony 18-55mm 3,5-5,6!! Supersharp edge-to-edge, and unbeatable "bang for the buck"!!🙂

Thanks for another trusted review Arthur. Congrats to the Sigma team for creating a high performance, compact travel zoom at such an affordable price point. No IS, no problem for photos. Let the shutter fly and, where higher ISO is needed, nothing a little NR in post can't handle. For devoted aps-c video shooters, you probably have a gimbal already to obtain those buttery smooth, stabile shots. If no gimbal, it's a an upgrade definately worth considering. Better capability than most IS, and they are getting more affordable and more compact. Congratulations your growing family Arthur!

Look careful at the pictures and you will see where the focal plane is on the wonderful model. In one shot, the wife's nose tip is in focus, in the other pix from the competing lens, the nose is a little out and the focal plane is closer to the eyes. So, I conclude that these are all incredible lens. I'm going to get the Sigma for my son's camera as he doesn't have a zoom in this focal length range. I am so stoked. I'd get one but I have the 18-105mm zoom and it does fine for me and I love the internal zoom feature. But...if I didn't, the Sigma would be in my inventory. Long Live ASP-C cameras. Finally! (😁 ) I made my choice between Sony 16-55mm or Sigma 18-50mm Last week, I order the the Sony 15-55mm for my Sony A6000 (I did mind to pay for the best quality lenses) I wait a week without any news. So I cancel my order to switch to this Sigma for many positive point: The price is $$$ vs $$$$ for Sony, Because I don't do video at all, I have no need to pay for steady F2.8 , the Sigma is much lighter, the quality is only a touch higher on Sony. But, I will miss the focus manual/automatic button (I do have it on my Sony 18-135mm. Great range) Another very positive difference for me is all Sigma lenses have 7 years guaranty in CANADA! 😁 // Thanks Arthur.

Perhaps a strange comparison would be with the Sony 18-135. About the same price and about the same weight. The Sigma gives us a brighter lens (but I’m curious about better quality when at f-stops the two lenses share), and the Sony gives us longer reach.

I would actually like this review too. I have the 18-135 and used it a lot when backpacking (2 years around the world). Thinking about swapping my 18-135 for this Sigma 18-50 but want to make sure overall quality is better for the 50-135 I'll loose. I have found the Sony 18-135 a step up from the kit but find it overall a NOT sharp lens and don't enjoy using it. Any insights would be helpful. Cheers. SB

@@scottiebumich for traveling the 18-105 is far better, no questions asked. Covers every focal range. The OSS is super steady (sigma doesn’t have it) and the autofocus is far faster as it’s a native lense. The sigma is the sharper lense but for travel or grab and go shooting, you will be disappointed when you lose the 50-105. I am still going to purchase it nevertheless because of its compactness and because it will turn out perfect for family holidays abroad. Great review. I just bought this for my a6300 and I agree totally with your recommendation. Portability/lightweight for hiking and skiing is a major consideration for my own use (I'm fed up of carrying a huge DSLR up mountains!) This lens is perfect for this and daily walk around use. The compromises on zoom range and lack of OS are totally offset by the low price. Stabilization is also less relevant at wide aperture and at the shorter focal lengths so I don't miss it. The lens is elegantly simple, small and produces stunning images. What's not to like?

I was a bit worried when I saw these reviews popping up on this lens, since I recently went for the Tamron 17-70 and so far I have to say, that I am still happy with my decision. Not having any vibration control on the Sigma is a bigger deal on my non-stabilized 6100, the Tamron does have a larger zoom range and in the more technical reviews the Sigma did not perform quite as well as the Tamron (especially in LoCA, slightly in sharpness). While specification wise it's not in the same league but usage wise at least for a part of its range the Sony 18-135 competes with this. Sony pricing too is close to this. The Sony 18-135 performs much beyond what's expected from it so I am interested to know how far behind it is compared to this sigma. Please do include it when you are doing a detailed comparison.

This would be my first choice but the price is not from this world. On the other hand it becomes cheaper maybe because of Sigmas new competitor. In Europe you can get it with Sonys winter cashback for about 900€ Btw.: Just found this comparison between the three: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ObH5uqmRwH4.html

Before Tamron gave us an APS-C lens I tested the 28-75 as Full-Frame on my A6400. I was just disappointed with the lens. Quality was okay for the price but damn - Missing OSS is just a Pain. If you're not living in the bahamas with Bright sunlight all day long you will miss OSS. It's not that I can't take pictures without it - I know the rules and how to use it unstabilized. Rocked a 50mm Minolta for a year. But it's just frustrating when you have to really work hard for pictures when you know that there is a better solution for it.

This lens looks really good, thrown a spanner in the works as to which to get next other this or the tameron 17-70... and I already own the sigma 16 and 30! Hear you with the price point for no OSS, but still lacking the perfect sony crop for video, without jellow and decent IBIS etc. so not quite there yet. Think Sigma are setting themselves up nicely for a 10-22 next, really hope that throw OSS on that and we will have a all time winner.

@preformingmonkey
@preformingmonkey 2 года назад
I think it starts at 18mm so as not to kill the Sigma 16mm f1.4. Paying 2/3 the price of the 18-50 2.8 for a prime, soley for the extra stops would be a hard sell on its own - if you combine that sell with the extra 2mm (which is alot on the wide end of focal lengths) then it keeps that lens more relevant too. I hope for Sigma to make an 18-35 F1.8 though for Sony E Mount APSC
@tommartin9731

Yeah, and the Sigma 16mm f1.4 is an outstanding lens for night shooting and is sharp to the corners. Even though I have the Sony 16-55 2.8, I can't part with the Sigma 16.
@mrspeeddemon727
@mrspeeddemon727 2 года назад
Considering this lens is f2.8, even if it went to 16mm, it still wouldn't replace the 16mm prime lens because of the F1.4 capability alone. I plan on doing the 16mm f1.4 for night/low light, astro, night street photography, the 56mm f1.4 for dedicated portrait photography and have this lens as a travel walk about lens. This will be my 'Sigma Trio". 😉
@tommartin9731
@tommartin9731 2 года назад
@@mrspeeddemon727 Two things I like about the Sigma 16mm over the Sony 16 - 55 f2.8. The Sigma has nearly no distortion in the corners, whereas the Sony does at 16mm. Secondly, the faster Sigma is marvelous in low light. I get amazing depth of field with the Sigma even at f5.6. Despite all this, the Sony lens is so versatile. I shoot it mostly at f4 to f8 in its full zoom range and its sharpness is second to none. In other words, both are superior lenses with different strengths. As I have come to know, you can get excellent results with most gear today if you know the limitations and work within those parameters. The difference is that normally the superior gear has a wider range of excellence.

All these f2.8 standard-zoom lenses never really appealed to me. Until now. Most of the time, these lenses are monster things. Sure, they're probably good optics, but I'd rather just bring a prime and zoom with my feet, plus get an even faster aperture. But this is actually tempting because it's kit-lens-small yet f2.8 fast. If they ever make one for Fuji, I'll probably buy one really quick.

Given that this lens is actually Sigma's first ever 2.8 zoom for native mirrorless aps-c, if this lens is proven popular Sigma might design the new 18-35 1.8 DC DN in the future. I myself would prefer Sigma to design 16-30mm 1.8 instead.
