So from what I personally picked up on this review. The sigma is sharper but lacks in AF and the Rokinon is better with AF but is not as sharp as sigma (slightly less sharp). Overall I would say sigma better for photos and rokinon for video. Hope that helps someone :D
Chris Haskell I got rokinon 35mm 1.4 after 20 days auto focus stopped working and manual focus ring won't work properly did a replacement order that one had a weird lines when I put the lens on my A7, make sure u read reviews before u buy rokinon that lens is not durable at all ! And autofocus is loud!
Syed Ahmed that's unfortunate. I hope you got a better copy. I only had my rokinon for a few weeks and then I found a good deal on a zeiss 35 distagon. I didn't have any problems but I couldn't stand how loud it was.
Syed Ahmed mine has been used daily for months and works great so don't trash talk samyang because of your had experience... If you even had that experience....
@10:45 - you compare the lenses with different focus plane (focused totally different) and say that the Rokinon is sharper @F1.4. Try to focus the lenses manually on the same object next time. Also when doing comparisons like these - leave the picture profiles @default, don't apply any filters or color grading to the images, compare straight out of camera raw's. People are interested about how lenses render the image, the colors and not your color grading skills.
Thanks for checking it out. I'll try manual next time. I used center af on both lenses. Maybe the sigma focus was off because in most other tests the sigma was just as sharp if not sharper but I wanted to rely of the af in this to see how reliable it is. Also noted on the picture profile
Don't take my commentaries as negative :) AF isn't always reliable, especially when you focus on a wider frame, it can pick up any object that has more contrast (in your case the trees in the back). Anyways, good job on comparing the 2 lenses. Cheers!
Thanks for the review! Great comparison. The Sigma has better contrast/microcontrast and the bokeh behind the balls in your shot looked alot smoother to me. I would choose the Sigma for these reasons.
I had the opposite results, i had two samyang 35mm f1.4 and returned both of them because of unreliable focus, constantly slightly missing and low light was really bad also serious color fringing in back lit situations, so the far the Sigma Art 35mm f1.4 has been much much better, sharp wide open, fast AF and consistently grabs focus perfectly, but i dont shoot video so couldnt say for that
Jenny Faulkner wow thanks for sharing! That's so surprising. Maybe my sigma copy was a dud or maybe the firmware on your samyangs were old. Supposedly the new firmware makes them faster and more reliable. I'm glad the sigma is working for you! It has such good image quality.
I think the Rokinon's bokeh is much better on the ball test. It is round all the way except the edges. The Sigma is football most places or has a slight point on most of the balls. Great video though and thanks! I want to the rokinon pretty badly and this didn't sway me away from wanting it at all.
My Rokinon 35mm f1.4 FE is very fast when using face detection and PPoff, but when using Flat Slog Picture Profile it's WAY TOO SLOW ! Did you noticed this ?
Nice review, by the way, was the firmware updated for the Rokinon 35mm? I saw news of an update firmware for the 35mm which improves the AF performance especially in lowlight.
Felan Carlo Garcia thanks for checking out the vid. Unfortunately it was v1 firmware. I couldn't get my hands on the lens dock needed for the update but I have also heard great things. I want to do another test as soon as I can get on of those lens docks
@@AndrewBoonVisuals If you use your camera you do not need a dock to do it for more update. With the Sony camera you can use it as a mass storage device with your USB. For this is for the sigma I'm not sure about that other one.
hahaha how exactly does the Rokinon fall short of the Zeiss? It outclasses it EASILY in sharpness across the frame at 1.4 where the Zeiss loses sharpness VERY fast. It has a little less CA as well. I have tested more than 5 copies of the Zeiss and neither was even close to the Rokinon. Dont let the Zeiss label cloud your judgement!
shaolin95 I definitely agree with you. The rokinon is a tad sharper and is the best bang for the buck for a 35mm 1.4 in terms of image quality for the Sony system. By falls short I was coming from a autofocus standpoint. The zeiss is just faster and tracks quicker especially in video mode which is better for my needs over the extra sharpness.
Try zearch*ng [the Zearch engine which shall not be named] for 'LensTip Sigma A 35 mm 1.4 DG HSM Image Resolution' and you'll see the optimal aperture is F4 or 5.6/but you lose some center sharpness. Also try 'LensTip Samyang AF 35 mm 1.4 FE Image Resolution' and you'll see that the optimal aperture is F5.6. Testing for optimal sharpness at F8 does not work on these lenses because diffraction has set in.
The results for the Samyang at 5.6 are some of the sharpest they have ever tested on Full Frame. It's a unique lens! Like every other lens on earth, it has its pros and cons, but you definitely cannot say it's any kind of low quality. Samyang is doing impressive work, I think they are surpassing Sigma in innovation and quality nowadays. They are creating fresh mirrorless designs while Sigma is treading water. Although Sigma's 105 Art is pretty awesome and unique. Hey now competition is good and I hope that Sigma comes back with some attacks. But that could take a long time, they kinda dropped all these Art lenses and they can't turn around and release something that replaces them without waiting a number of years.
That's awesome and pretty exciting news for the mirrorless community. This was my first Samyang for the Sony system and I had reservations at first but I'm definitely a believer now! I am very curious about that Sigma 105 though. I'm sure its a heavy beast with amazing IQ
Have the samyang very impressed with performance and the autofocus improves with updated firmware you will have to spend really big money to improve on the performance of this lens highly recommend it
i dont shoot video so im not gonna be biased by your review ... both look good ..I'll stick with my Sigma as I only really shoot stills... thanks the review
i sent mine back soon after leaving my comment as the AF kept locing up & only by detaching the lens I could reset it..in backlight situations the eye AF would not work at all & it hunted in & out.. I got the Sony 28mm F2 to replace it & the AF & eye AF works a treat..
First off thanks for the great review! At @10:10 those streaks I believe are terrible coma + astigmatism in the Sigma... or should I say Stigma lens? Sorry, cheesy I know. That could really hurt any chance of using it for astrophotography. Could you maybe check that between these two lenses too?
TechJunkie thanks for the info! Haha stigma. That would be a good test. I no longer have the sigma but will make sure to include that in my testing for lenses in the future!
Zangeef Fangsteen version 1! I've heard good things about version 2 but unfortunately the lens dock needed for the update still isn't available at most major retailers in the US. I have seen a few on Ebay from international sellers though
Thanks for watching! I havent heard of an update coming but I've heard that some people are experiencing a little better performance after they updated their a7iii to the most recent firmware. I have yet to confirm if thats accurate though.
same issue all lenses from third parties other than Zeiss have. Using a single motor for auto focus. I'm going to have a full set of e mount Arts for the photography side of my business. And all Zeiss Batis & Sony Zeiss for video side
Agreed! Thats definitely a good plan in getting the best of both. I cant afford it lol. I'm going to stick with Zeiss & Sony Zeiss. They are just the best for me.
Hello, Thank you for the review. My Samyang 35/1.4 focused from experience a bit faster. Was not mentioned anywhere but had the Samyang lens 0.2 firmware? The latest one?
Songkun Ji still version 1 firmware. I hear great things about version 2. I wish the lens dock needed for the update was more readily available in the states
Excellent video. Exactly what I was looking for. Can you please do a comparison with the Art vs Distagon 35 1.4? Ive been waiting for the sigma 35 1.4 and really wanted to like it but there’s been a lot of mixed reviews. I need something with fast AF but the Art falls short. Liked and subscribed!
John Nguyen thanks! The sigma was a rental and I no longer have it but next time I get my hands on it I'll definitely do a comparison with the Sony zeiss 35. I will say that the Sony zeiss 35 is the only 35 for Sony mount that I have bought, loved, and kept. It is pricey but honestly it is just way better than both sigma and rokinon in terms of af speed and accuracy. Image quality is very similar to the sigma and better than the rokinon. I hope that helps for now.
My copy of Zeiss Distagon is extremely inaccurate for Eye AF (misses focus and super soft). HAS to be a bad copy, its really bad. Only option now is to try the sigma. Praying we will see a 35 GM one day
Peter Cerrato it's version 1. Unfortunately the adapter needed to update the lens isn't readily available in the states yet. If hears good thing about version 2. Especially in low light
Great video comparing the two lenses! For the video AF tests, what were your settings for AF drive speed & AF track sensitivity? Thanks! I'm considering these two lenses mainly for video but not sure which one to get...
Seb Hazel thanks man! Means a lot. Settings were normal and standard. If your planning to do mostly video then I'd recommend the rokinon for sure. Better af and even the manual focusing feels better
Really great review. You put the time into this and it paid off. I’m not completely impressed by either of them on the video focusing, both seemed slow.
Thanks for checking it out. The Sigma was a rental and the Rokinon was a friends. My buddy still has it and loves it. No issues at all. I would also recommend the Rokinon. It has new firmware and is now better in low light.
Thanks for watching! No it doesnt have a focus switch. You would have to set it to manual from the camera menu. This can be made faster if you set one of the custom buttons to AF/M. This way you can switch to af or manual with the press of a button. Hope that helps.
Dj Djalel by quick focus mode do you mean af settings on fast and responsive? If so then yes I tried it. Results for both lenses were marginally better but overall the rokinon still performed better
Thank you for your answer. I found my self a bit disappointed about those E-mount ART lenses, first with their DSLR engineering heavy weight, and if it's true, their lack of high speed autofocus, knowing that this E-mount version series is made for that.
I cant get myself to give up on the sigma 35mm. I feel like its a firmware update away from being a great lens. Specially since its so snappy at focusing on photo mode.
ADVTR Collective I had the same thoughts! I will definitely give it another go when the new firmware is out. Until then going back to the Sony zeiss distagon.
I would go with the rokinon. Since weddings are kind of unpredictable the more reliable af will be great to have. You will miss more moments with the sigma.
Goodluck to all rokinon/samyang owners with electornic disconnection problems, thats why i went for sigma, few of my friends threw their samyang to garbage, couldnt fix at all, lenses just stopped to connect to camera
I used to have that camera. If it's the Sony FE Mount version of the lens it should fit no problem. Sigma has a lens mount conversion service if you have the wrong mount type
Hello ☺️ New Rokinon 35 1.4 II came out. Maybe you can make another comparison with new rokinon (samyang) 35 1.4 II and Sigma 35 1.4. This your comparison is one of the best on RU-vid 🫶
Farhan ihsan n you can definitely set it to manual focus but you have to go through the camera settings and the sigma has an af to manual switch on the lens
your images are kinda blown out and has very weird colors. I am not sure if these were edited? If so I wish you hadn't edited them. Also, one thing you forgot to compare is the colors. Rokinon has an ugly color while the Sigma has much more natural looking colors and actually better. I hated the Samyang so much for its colors.
iam new to sony and gonna get it sony a7 mark 3 soon , but iam rea,ly confuced with the lences which i have to buy ... so can you pls give me an good advice for lenses ?? between iam a photographer and mostly i do videos , so i need the focal lengths 50/55mm 85mm 35mm and good wide angle lens pls advice me the brands which i can affordable and usefull and the aparture pls,...thanks
Welcome to the Sony fam! My recommended starting lenses that have great image quality at a low cost are the tamron 28-75 2.8 and the Sony 85 1.8 lens. These two will be all you need for most shoots.
Andrew Boon Zeiss with the pathetic sharpness away from the center wide open where the samyang is razor sharp plus the awful Zeiss onion rings????!!! No thanks
shaolin95 agreed. I'm glad you have a great copy of the rokinon. I'm mainly a videographer so the quicker focus tracking and optional manual aperture ring of the zeiss sold me. If I mainly did photos the rokinon would be my choice hands down
Good job there, very useful. It seems like nothing new is ventured under the sun, Sigma always (we are talking more than three decades now) had problem getting their auto focus in gear properly. They can do the glass, but for critical work I have always trusted for example Tamron more, the reason why is really simple; Tamron have in the past been contracted to do branded lenses for the cheaper kit lenses to several major camera manufacturers, that means they have been let in on the "secret mojo", how the AF signals between the lens and camera works, which is different between the camera manufacturers. Still if AF is critical, go for the ones that can deliver that. Rokinon (Samyang) seems to do a better job than Sigma. By the bye; Bokeh is a phonetic Japanese word for the smooth out of focus qualities of a picture, if you want to sound like you own it; pronounce it like the Japanese (not "bowka"): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Y0Brf2l8Ysc.html
