You have no idea how much this has helped me. No one could help me visualize how orbitals exist properly. I wish you much more success in the future

In my language the letter Pi is pronounced "pi" as in pipi... My professor literally said that a triple bond is called "Sigma pipi" and that's exactly how she pronounced it as well... Bro, the sigma pipi jokes didn't stop all week...
@blue-fg6wu
@blue-fg6wu Год назад
Why should a pi bond be above and below does that not mean you have 1 pair from sigma and 2 pairs from pi making 3 pairs of electrons?
@mejamoni3091
@mejamoni3091 Год назад
No - the 2 p orbitals overlap BUT remember that they only have one electron in each orbital not two. So when the orbitals overlap - despite there being two places of overlap they can only form one bond where there are two electrons therefore making a single pi pond. So there is 1 pi bond + 1 sigma bond = double bond. Hope this helps :)

Wait, isn't the sigma bond in O2 the overlap of sp2 orbitals not p? Or did I miss something?
