The Silver Screen Studios family mourns the passing of beloved Rabbi Douglas Goldhamer (May 1, 1945 - February 3, 2022), President of Hebrew Seminary & Senior Rabbi of Congregation Bene Shalom in Skokie, IL. We were privileged to speak to him last fall for our new series "Sign of the Times."
In his blessed memory, we shall honor the date of his birth each year as "Be Kind Day".
Condolences to friends, family, students, congregants and loved ones.

When Rabbi Douglas Goldhamer arrived in Chicago from Cincinnati in the early 1970s, he found deaf Jews attending church services because they had no place of worship to accommodate their needs or view them as equals.
So in 1972, Goldhamer founded Bene Shalom, a Reform Judaism congregation in Skokie that interprets all of its services in American Sign Language. It’s often cited as the only full-service synagogue in the nation dedicated to the deaf.
Marlee Matlin, one of the stars of the Academy Award nominated film CODA, was part of the congregation and Rabbi Goldhamer officiated at both her Bat Mitzvah and wedding.
