The historic Sri Sri Mahabhairab Temple, is situated in a hillock in the ancient city of Tezpur, Assam (earlier known as Haruppeshwara). As per reports, this temple holds one of the largest living stone Shiva Linga in Asia. According to the Puranas, the son of King Mahabali and Vindhyavali, King Ban Asura (who was one of the most powerful kings of all time) was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, has built the temple with stones. King Bana wanted to transform his kingdom, Sonitpur into second Kashi by installing 108 Shiva Lingams, but Lord Shiva himself kept one Linga hidden under the mud as it was not possible to make another Kashi in Bharat.
Through ages, the temple was taken care by the Salasthamba dynasty (who donated a large part of devottar land), the Ahom kingdom and later the Borthakur family. In present context, the temple is managed by the Sri Sri Mahabhairab Temple Management Committee.
Various noted personalities of India, including Home Minister Sri Amit Shah has recently visited here. Sri Sri Mahabhairab Mandir is a mystery in itself. Surrounded by greenery amidst the beautiful town of Tezpur, this temple is a remarkable site for visitors, especially during Maha Shiva Ratri and the holy month of Shravana.
