. When selling or handing off a pre-owned iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch you've likely heard about the issue new owners end up facing where they cannot set up the device due to something called "iCloud Activation Lock". This is a security feature by Apple for their devices if they're lost/stolen that prevents their use even when reset/erased. It's part of the "Lost My iPhone" service through iCloud that allows users to find their devices on a map, have them make sounds to find them, display a message on the screen and remotely erase them to prevent any breach of their personal data. Most users tend to overlook this when erasing their devices as you must first sign out of your Apple ID on the device itself and then erase it. Otherwise just erasing the device will not remove it from your Apple account and your Apple credentials will be required to activate it.
Simply go to "Settings" and tap on your Apple ID at the left-upper corner of the display and then scroll down on the submenu to "Sign Out" and tap the button. You'll need to enter your Apple ID password and then answer a few prompts about saving any data (to which you don't) to remove the device from your account. Afterwards make sure you're in the "General" submenu and scroll down to "Transfer or Reset" and tap the button. In the next menu tap "Erase All Content and Settings". You'll have to answer more prompts and enter any passcodes you have set on the device and answer one last prompt. After that the device will perform a hard reset/erase removing all data and setting the device back to how it would be from the factory.
