Have you ever seen those signs at a hostel or hotel depicting how far it is to one country or another? Well, it all started here.
In 1942 American Soldier Carl Lindley was up here helping to build the Alaska highway out of concern for America being attacked in a war-related retaliation. The road, though extremely spartan, was complete in an unbelievable 8-months and 12-days!
Homesick and on signpost repair duty, he decided to put up a sign pointing toward his home in Danville, Illinois. It caught on with others and later with tourists. To date over 100,000 signs have been placed here and copycats of his signature signage can be seen across the globe.
