Wow, I sure wish you lived closer to me. I have lupus (no kidney involvement) and a history of hep C which is gone dt tx. My hepscore showed some fibrosis. Level 2.Enzymes never elevated. I've never gotten enough protein based on these numbers. It would be tough to eat that much. I'm 66 and worked as an RN all my adult life. 1/2 of that running the halls. I've always been strong. Now I'm pretty weak with limited ability to do physical work. Hair fall is high in a certain area. So, I'm working on my eating. Thank you for your work. It has helped me quite a bit.
Thanks! You've exposed the full realm of the very digestive issue I've dealt with for many years . Gerd and a lot of degenerative muscle mass are two of the many issues I experience . Betaine Hydrochloride and pepsin are supplements I've recently started taking .
Be cautious with betaine. I started betaine with digestive enzymes and developed anorexia and weight loss but no abdominal pain. I underwent a colonoscopy (normal) and upper endoscopy, which showed moderately severe gastritis. I continued digestive enzymes and stopped the betaine, and anorexia and weight loss resolved.
Every morning I get on the floor on my back and do about 10 minutes of excercises with weights. I bend my knees and do different arm exercises, crunches from side to side, With the weights over my head i do bicycle exercises. I satand and with the weights on my hips I squat. I am 67 and look much younger. I have had many injuries but I refuse to be disable. I believe that you should do what you can to stay strong and healthy. Stop depending on doctors and medicine. Eating healthy is key to your wellbeing and so is exercise.
Thankyou so oo ,much. Your knowledge and imformation has totally helped me untangle my messed up body and mind by your amazing explanation to questions asked .You truly are a life saver .Thankyou so much. ❤
Your video was so accurate, and very detailed. Also, it was very well laid out. I graduated in (bachelors) biochemistry & have been in health care for like 15 ish yrs. Nutrition is one of my hyperfocuses. I love your video.
I am very intuitive. Sometimes I just know which doesn’t help you. When people are protein deficient they will have hormone imbalances. Things will just not be quite right but they can’t explain it. They go to the doctor and the doctor can’t find anything wrong. They just don’t feel right. Maybe have unexplained minor pains that come and go in different places. When I ask about their diet they are vegan, vegetarian, or eat very little animal products.
I was a fruitarian (mainly ate fruit and some vegetables) no meat but I'd cheat and eat eggs out of necessities. I was too brainwashed thinking meat was bad :( I am no longer doing that, but I am concerned at how long should I be taking in a higher amount of protein since I was definitely low in my protein for over six years.I can tell I was low in something as it was so exhausting going up and down the stairs. I do now eat meat and I take in yogurt and protein powder and protein bars. I feel like a big fat empty drum as if I can't seem to get enough and those days I take in a lot I get so joyous and filled with energy and can do my workouts weight lifting etc very well. but I then cut back on it as I am not sure if I am taking in too much protein then I feel blah again. This is very exhausting lol.
Try go for 1g per cm of your height. If you get less then no biggy, but it's a good measure. There is no such thing as too much protein, you wouldn't be able to eat too much anyways.
per the most high level expertise vid's i've see on RU-vid and elsewhere (serious sources), your body will not let u eat too much protein. Its very self limiting. The only time ppl get too much is when they are out in nature surviving off the land and have nothing but rabbit meat, which has zero fat. Then u die within months or even weeks i guess.
A diet primarily focused on meat, especially if it excludes important food groups, can lack a variety of essential nutrients that are not found in animal products. Meat contains no dietary fiber, which is essential for digestive health and can help reduce the risk of various chronic diseases. Fiber is mainly found in plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole grains. A diet primarily composed of meat may be deficient in several vitamins and minerals, such as: Vitamin C: This vital antioxidant is primarily found in fruits and vegetables and is essential for immune health, skin health, and wound healing. Meat Got C? NONE Vitamin A: Meat contains little to no vitamin A. Sources of vitamin A include colorful vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes. Vitamin K: Leafy greens and certain vegetables are excellent sources of vitamin K, which plays a crucial role in blood clotting and bone health. Folate (Vitamin B9): Folate is essential for DNA synthesis and cell growth. It's abundant in leafy greens, legumes, and fortified cereals. Meat? NONE Calcium: Meat does not provide calcium, which is crucial for bone health. Fortified plant-based milk alternatives, beans, and leafy greens are good sources of calcium. Healthy Fats: While meat contains fats, it lacks the variety of healthy fats found in sources like nuts, seeds, and avocados.. These fats provide essential fatty acids and have various health benefits. Antioxidants and Phytochemicals: Meat does not contain antioxidants and phytochemicals. These compounds play a vital role in protecting cells from oxidative damage and supporting overall health.
Oh now that is astonishingly smart. Come down off your high horse. Meat is not only unhealthy for the human species, leading cause of disease globally, leading cause of climate destruction, but it is also causing a biodiversity nightmare. Species extinction anyone? Get a clue!@@lizellehattingh281
Tofu is NOT fermented. I wish it was. Unfermented soy is a goitrogen, and very bad for the thyroid, and has other issues as well. Some examples of fermented soy are tempeh, miso, and natto.
Great program!!! Thsnk you Doc..very informative however for me it is a review. Also, i think Protein powder is great to supplement one's diet. What's your opinion?
Sounds like soy based protein, and soybeans are also high in vegetable estrogen. Consider that also please. Find a healthy source of eggs from chickens that are free to run around and eat bugs and greens, and whatever things they naturally enjoy, besides their feed. Meat, fish, chicken, best from animals that are free, and not prisoners in confined and overcrowded conditions. Good luck.
28:00 I do understand that (maybe) body needs all three macronutrients (fat, carbs, protein), but I did not see evidence that it should (even roughly) be 33%-33%-33% as kind of optimal. For example, 2-stroke engines really need both gasoline and oil to work, but that does not mean that the ratio is 50%-50% (as many would know, typically it is 2%-98% in favour of gasoline). So, for 2 stroke engines we have evidence, where are evidences for 33%-33%-33%?
Fiber is a myth😂😂😂 since I stopped consuming fiber my IBS is a thing of the Past!!!!!! And no more constipation or bloating. No one size fits all says the Dr
Apparently high carbs foods causes too high acid saliva which is one cause of gum ressession, just something I have heard and seen good results when going carnivore.
22:20 strong opiates like that are not prescribed for beginning stages of arthritis. Didn’t even need to be used in this diagram really. If you are on something that strong for arthritis then that person is already physically affected with the malformation of arthritis and there’s nothing that can be done to get rid of it now.

Good shape going into 5’7” 128 lbs 10 mi/ day sprint 9 minutes. Weight resistance arms chest. Amazingly still hs this happen was picking up trash fell on hard concrete.
whole my life I had all these symptoms and hair loss was worrying so I did see Dr about it but didn't help me no one suggest protein deficiency, I just liked carbs , and meat is expensive so eat very badly
Protein in muscles is being used, not stored. Sugars are created by gluconeogenesis from fat and protein. Fasting burns both fat and protein. When I lost 50 pounds from fasting and calorie restriction, I lost muscle as well as fat. (My guess is 10 pounds muscle and 40 pounds fat). I was glad to be down 6 inches at my waist. It took me a year to rebuild the muscle. One source says 25% is from protein (75% from fat) during gluconeogenesis. So fasting causes muscle wasting. I now favor time restricted eating (12 to 16 hours per day not eating).
I have a question regarding collagen: isn’t it the same as eating any other protein? I have the impression that collagen will be digested into amino acids just as any other protein.
The protein source from meat doesn’t seem to be working like it used to…they announced that all meat sold in stores except the grass fed extremely expensive organic meat is now being grown in labs from cells they’ve cloned from animals…they’ve also put the info out that the meat isn’t actual meat but is actually bugs made to appear and taste like actual meat but isn’t. If this is true then of course the body can’t absorb the protein from bugs because the bugs don’t contain the nutrients that beef and chicken has to make it absorbable …there’s a reason why we don’t eat bugs lol..,it will literally cause starvation even though there’s food…or what appears to be food…woody Harrelson told us the truth of what’s going on…
After CABG, Dr. tells to take baby Aspirin but Aspirin has several side effects. Then what is the solution? Is there any better substitute of Aspirin? Kindly reply.
@@astrialindah2773 All herbs including Garlic was tried to substitute Aspirin but none worked as Aspirin works. During that test, Aspirin was withdrawn for 10 days due to bleeding from intestines. Once Aspirin was stopped; bleeding was substantially reduced. In those 10 days, Garlic, Omega 3, Ginger and all natural blood thinners were tried but patient started to feel pain/discomfort around her heart. So, Aspirin was resumed, and her discomfort around heart was gone.
Vitamin C thins blood, garlic... So be careful when you go on any kind of surgery! Stop taking blood thiners. My dad got a brain aneurism from blood thiners.
Thank you so much, your information is life saving. Specially because i'm vegetarian and i had lower my protein. You should open a school to teach médecine or related cours. You're a great teacher 🎉
Got as far as the demonising of carbs. Keto, been there, under a doctors direction, just made me worse. Much better on a balance of carbs, proteins and fats. When advice demonises one food group, with no proof except saying," we know that, right," it's a big red flag. Our bodies need a balance. Also, cortisol isn't only upped by food, it can be increased with stress. Does not matter what your diet is, if you suffer from chronic stress, cortisol is going to be wreaking havoc and all the nutrition in the world won't be actually feeding your body. Address stress first, as well as sleep. That takes months. Then look at your diet, bit by bit, without excluding food groups.
Nutrients are not all equal... And yes, carbs are not all good nor are they all bad. But by saying that switching to a higher carb diet has detrimental effects because you're assuming people will be making the wrong choices is overcompensating and not speaking the truth. Just because most people will make the wrong choices does not change the FACT that more carbs are NOT bad. We could say the same for protein, most people choose the wrong type of protein, so should we say that increasing your protein consumption is a bad idea?
@@DrOsborne I agree that overconsumption of anything is generally not good, but we aren't talking about overconsuming of calories, just consuming carbs instead of protein. My point is that consuming the right type of carbs is not problematic as you stated, but assuming that people will consume the wrong type and therefore suggesting that replacing protein with carbs is a bad thing is not accurate. Edit: Clarification: we are talking about replace a percentage of protein calories with carbs, not replacing 100% of protein calories with carbs, which is impossible to do anyway.
Silverback gorilla must be protein deficient considering how many leaves he eats and how much muscle he has. Need to tell him about beef. Unbelievable that one lady’s theory from Diet For A Small planet in the 70s is still around after all this time even though she admitted soon after that she was wrong. Follow the money !
@@4nbop80user well after fat loss, I lost muscle and not skin. The body cannibalizes muscle tissue easiest to get the bodies protein operational cost...maybe it varies from person to person?
@@adcaptandumvulgus4252 Well, been there too, on low calorie. This time I followed dr. Jason Fung : fasting, keto. That is muscle sparing. I lost muscle really fast at some point, due to Lots of chronic stress. That really is a killer. I’m fixing that in the gym. Great progress noted.
I enjoy your podcasts enormously and download them to listen at night. Many times I fall asleep, only to be woken with a start at the volume of your signature music. It’s so jarring and much loader then the volume of your voice. Please turn the music down when you upload
4 oz Sirloin Steak has 26.8g protein according to MyFitnessPal. Less for New York Strip. Grass fed is leaner compared to Corn/Soy finished. So numbers vary a bit. 7.5 grams protein per large egg. From the packages: 13 grams per 1/4 cup black beans 9 grams per 1/4 cup lentils 7 grams per 2 oz organic whole wheat spaghetti (21 grams protein for 6 oz like I eat for dinner) 6 grams protein per 1/2 cup dry rolled oats, 1/4 cup Quinoa or 3 tablespoons flaxseed 4 grams protein per 1 oz walnuts 3 grams protein per 1 oz Pecans 0 grams protein per oil or vinegar Remember you get protein in your vegetables too. (1 to 3 grams?)
Your channel appeared on my feed and now lm hooked on you, Dr Osborne. So much of this info l could have used 50 years ago! I can only imagine how happier l could have been without constant stomach upsets. My mother said l was a whiner/complainer, but no, l spent years in misery! And lm still very conscious of everything l eat because l never know when l may experience stomach pain. You’ve made all of this simple to understand. Much Love ♥️
Stephanie, Many mothers are alike, and they've no compassion; they don't (truly) love their children, and wouldn't know when their children are truly in pain. Compassion extends from true love! One of my school friends (and neighbour) who was born with scoliosis had terrible pain as a teenager, and also to this very day! Her mom always told her that she was lazy and never treated her nicely as her siblings who didn't have health issues. Not everyone who has made children is a mother! My siblings and I always felt sorry and helped her to complete her chores.
Dr. Osborne, this is wonderfully helpful. Im 80 and over the past three years, mostly due to covid limitations, I exercised less and ate less. I really need to build up.my.muscles and improve my skin. Bless you for your kindness.
@@sl4983 Don't worry,I never overdid exercise in my life. I take short walks and do some yoga moves but nothing strenuous. Actually, 80 is not 100. I take care of my home and garden and spend most of the day running around after my granddaughters while my daughter works. 😃
Why people lose so much lean body mass as they get older? One reason is they’re not eating enough protein. second reason is they’re eating the wrong sources of protein. third reason is that they are not digesting their protein.
4th reason... being poverty in old age. Also known as insufficient income. 5th reason... Not to mention ignorance at any age level, and at any income level too.
This is one of the most helpful videos I’ve seen on RU-vid. I’ve been vegetarian and vegan, but i feel like that i might be protein and possibly iron deficient. Thanks for being so detailed. I’ll have to save this to watch again.
I developed advanced osteoporosis of the spine at a very young age ( am a competitive dancer) and developed calcium deposits in my soft tissues after being vegetarian for 10 years. It was a shock. We are not supposed to be vegetarians. 🙃
I had to get an app to help me keep track of my macros and micros. When I first switched to fish ovo dairy vegetarian, I was not getting enough protein and not enough vitamin D from my diet (I had blood lab work done for vit D). So first the first 3 mths or more I was deficient for sure. I had the early symptoms he described. Now it s been several months since I started tracking my nutrients my nails & hair definitely better.

I’m now 99% percent grain and sugar free no oils soy I mostly eat meat very little veg, and I have followed you and dr. I love the way you teaching by explaining everything easy way to understand and additional using the blackboard to make it even more visual and understandable. I never hear from any of my doctors and seems like they just not so educated because they should give the positive education and encouragement to fix the problem not just to symptoms the symptoms which in long run the meds they prescribed make more problems. I think every doctor should have this kind of knowledge like you and not just pushing pills
I developed advanced osteoporosis of the spine at a very young age ( I am a competitive dancer and very fit) and developed calcium deposits in my soft tissues plus severe arthrosis after being vegetarian for 10 years. It was a shock. We are not supposed to be vegetarians. 🙃
For calcium to be used by bone it requires magnesium, vitamins K2 and C, zinc and potassium. Missing the combo the calcium is deposited in tissue leading to pain. Dr Berg on YT explains in more detail.
At 72, in excellent health. I have always cooked from scratch. Never any processed foods. Regardless of being mainly a veg. Eater. I think taking nuts, seeds, good oils an occasional meats, fish and tiny Dairy amounts . It is understanding nutrition that counts. So much info out there.
Liquid iodine on the skin ..the size of a 50 cent piece will help heal your thyroid ..we put it on the skin because it will only absorb what it needs..can't overdose on as with oral . The quicker the iodine disappears the more your body needs it .
Yes, I got rid of my goiter painting iodine. But, you can still get too much via this route so you still have to be careful not to use too much. If you start to feel hot, irritable, racing heart, and insomnia then you need to b back off for a bit
I use moringa powder, it seems to supply all of the amino acids and many of the other nutrients that we need to function, but I would be interested in your take on this, thank you
But the dosage... If you are taking it for the aminos, you would need alot of it, and that would be crazy expensive. Whey protein also have all the aminos, much cheaper.
@@Nicolailund15 There’s more to moringa than just the amino acid, moringa provides more sulfurophane then broccoli which is quite important for mitochondrial function it has all the vitamins in larger percentage than the fruit, attributed to, like oranges and vitamin A and so on ,so yeah somethings may have more protein or more amino acids but the fact of the matter is they usually not in balance with the other nutrients whereas moringa is very well balance
I had a deathly low level of hemoglobin when I was 17 and I had Epstein Barr and wound up being hospitalized for liver failure. A less common complication from EBV happens to be viral hepatitis. The hospital was sooooooo confused. I was sooooo jaundiced. I happened to get hives, and those were orange from the lovely mix of red and yellow 😬.
Sure hope that you are doing well now, and keeping all strong and healthy. Please do take good care of yourself and stay away from refined sugars and all kinds of factory made food like substances.😊❤
I would love to know more about this. I'm plagued by herpes simplex 1. Not sure if ur aware but Epstien Barr is a herpesvirus also. They claim they are benign skin viruses. That's what doctors are taught but if u read the studies as I have for over a decade, it's clear they are covering it up. I haven't been able to get any doctors or neurologists to give me a full viral panel so I know what else I have, like Epstien Barr. No idea if I have it. Most likely do. Everyone does is the excuse. Cash cow. Latent viruses & some other pathogens like Lyme are the root of all inflammation imo. They want u to think "it's YOUR body attacking ITSELF". The pattern is, they always want to blame us, it's never environmental, it's never their fault, the chemicals everywhere, the viruses they refuse to acknowledge, the toxic food & medicines, stress of being one paycheck from homelessness. Couldn't possibly be they encouraged free love so a whole generation of babies get born with herpes. Hand raised here. Then they give the false impression that condoms prevent all STDs. No, not herpes or warts. Oral sex defeats the purpose. I can't believe we still haven't seen the light on this. Then again I haven't taken sex ed in a long time. Although, it seems like sex Ed has gotten worse because people don't even know how HIV works anymore. I feel like they are just teaching kids how to have sex, not the dangers of it like when I was a kid. They teached abstinence back then. Now they teach sex positions. How to do BJs. It's crazy. It's like they want everyone to get infected.
Wow…hope you are ok now. EBV messes with you big time. 🙏 I went to emergency with a rapid pulse in 2018. Big confusion. They gave me meds (just in case), x-ray (just in case), 2 rounds of blood work (just in case) and then wanted to send me to another hospital to put in a stent ( just in case). Nothing definitive. I got myself out of there armed with my blood work and headed straight to my doctor’s office. He opened the folder, looked at my blood work and in the time it takes to blink, he said, “you’re just low in potassium, go home and eat a banana!” I ask you, who are they hiring to work in emergency at night that they’re incapable of deciphering bloodwork. And….there were at least 2 different doctors that looked at the results. 🫣
So interesting you mention about injury and not enough protein. I messed up my shoulder and I have been unable to work out. In my case, I can see the protein link because my body has been struggling to break down and absorb protein properly.
I really wish i had seen this sooner! I was loosing weight, muscle mass, hair, fatigue, etc for about 6 mos. Over the summer decided to try a carvivore diet and felt SO much better! Now I know the why! After calculating the protein I actually needve discovered that i probably still need a bit of supplementation. Thank you so much for this information
You cannot need supplementation if you are carnivore unless you have a disease or are just not eating or you are only eating one part of an animal or only eating white meat chicken and no dark meat. There is a test for *total protein, albumin, and albumin/globulin (A/G) ratio* Albumin and globulin are two proteins that the liver produces. This test can reveal whether total protein levels are low and if albumin and globulin proteins are at optimal levels.
@@shawnagunn9054 Ive never heard of lyme preventing protein digestion. Are you sure it's not an allergy caused by leaky gut? How are you getting protein now? We cannot live long without protein.
Omg!!!! I have 14 chronic issues, for years have suffered with the medical system, recently diagnosed with IBD , including gluten and dairy issues, thankyou thankyou for saving my life
Collagen supplementation recently worked wonders for me - within a week; in recovering from intermittent pain in hips - especially upon weight bearing. Was also losing sleep at at night, because of pain in various positions... Now - painless - it feels as if in heaven when lying down. To relieve pain and swelling in general, applying DMSO topically is often effective; working even better if Aloe vera gel is added. MSM powder can also be ingested; this in addition to Vit C, with the latter needed for collagen production. When it comes to bone pain, it could be as result of Vit D and/or other vit&mineral deficiencies. Previously I once was suffering from a painful restless leg type condition; this after drinking much water without replenishing minerals.
I make my own collegen bone broth,a lot of work but worth it. Also Boron is an essential trace mineral for bone density and reversing and addressing arthritis and calcification of flesh
@@sl4983 Had started out on Nuskin's BEAUTY FOCUS COLLAGEN Plus. However, found it too expensive in the long term. Also, after a few months it caused constipation, because of added Stevia. Now using mainly more affordable BIOGEN COLLAGEN with Peptan - unflavoured.
When you are older and have no teeth to chew with - how do you get needed protein ? Especially for those UNDER weight. When you can't eat, how do you get protein needed - choke down those horrible protein drinks that you hate so much you end up having it come back up they are so terrible ? When you can't chew you can't' eat meat. Your video is good but it does not tell us HOW to GET the needed protein. I drink Bone Broth but it cases weight loss. IT's collagen but it makes you LOSE wright and if I lose anymore weight, I'll be invisible. I've tried all my life to GAIN weight. Everyone thinks that everyone if fat - not skin and bone that many of us are ! I'm 78
If you've been toothless a long time, your gums should be pretty tough by now. You should be able to "chew" soft meats like hamburger, pork tenderloin, chicken thighs, fish fillets, and of course eggs. Invest in a modern electric pressure cooker. You can make tough cheaper cuts of meat fall-apart tender. Easy to eat.
I agree with you about assuming that everyone is overweight! I’m constantly trying to gain weight. I found that I have a B1 deficiency which causes weigh loss/ loss of appetite.
@@contrarymary76my thoughts exactly. If there is a will, there is a way. Many older folks just dont want to bother anymore. There is no need to cook daily either. I use an Instapot, or crock pot, or oven bag, cook a larger cut of meat, or two, then when it’s done, I immediately put most in hot sterilized mason jars, cover with sterilized lids and when it cools down, it’s sealed, I put in the fridge. I have variety of foods prepared this way, can decide what I want to eat each day. I can add sides of veg, or make something like burger patties fresh, when I desire. I take advantage of meat sales, do batch cooking maybe twice a month. Right now I have 5 different foods cooked, each has 2-3 or more portions. It last a long time, it’s vacuum sealed and in the fridge. No mess, with Instapot you can brown meat on sauté setting first and then pressure cook all in one pot. No pots and pans to clean up, besides few utensil and when done, the inside pot goes in to the dishwasher.😊 next I will try soups vide cooking for even more tenderness and juiciness. Nothing like a good home cooked food, you know exactly what you are eating too.
