No, they did not kill a fox for the video. before filming, they sent out a tweet asking if anyone found a dead fox that they could film. They found this one at the side of the road. They filmed it over 30 days decaying. Also, the live fox is named Tod, he is trained. Tod was not harmed.

I just realized that "be brave" is not about overcoming your pain, but about enduring all the pain in the world. Time disappears with all things, good and bad.

To this day… one of the most beautiful music videos ever made, in my opinion.

I hope I'm not the only one who cries when I watch this. Fucking amazing.

The part where he says "Why do things always have to change?" is what got to me the most. It really describes my inner fears and anxieties.

I've been depressed for about 5 years. I haven't been able to cry much for about 3. Yesterday I watched this and it was really good, still haven't gotten over it. I really want to hug my pets.

I interpret this as being about the disconnect between modern life and nature, and fear of death. When the film starts the man is at a crisis point feeling lost and alone, and I think that this is a comment on modern life due to the line about not thinking you could get lost "these days", as well as the contrast between the wild, countryside setting with the man's urban office-wear. He is out of touch with nature, concepts like life and death, and his life feels synthetic and hollow. He is afraid of being alone, and most of all afraid of death. When he meets the fox he is confronted by death - first he thinks the fox wants to attack and kill him, and then he realises that the fox is dying. He finds it terrifying but the wise snail convinces him to be brave and engage with the dying fox, which he does by providing it comfort as it dies. The fox decomposing shows the fox returning to the earth, it is natural and an inevitable part of life, and exposes his fear of death as unnatural. When he wakes up he has accepted death, and therefore accepted life. It is dark, but he looks up and sees beauty in life, nature and the universe, and, like the snail, is able to go on with calmly living. (I had to type that out to make it clear in my own head - the meaning of this has been bugging me since I first saw it!)

What’s lonely is feeling these profound feelings while watching this art, then showing someone else and they don’t see it. 😞

I always come back to this song when I’m feeling lost. Lost of emotion, fulfillment, motivation, and many other emotions that I can’t put into words just yet.

My interpretation: I think the whole thing is a look into the soul of the main character. The snail symbolize "Hope"...the first glance into himself that makes him realize there's still beauty and light in him, even if it looks like a small flame...the meadow symbolize his wandering through his own self...the doubt, he's not sure who he is, why he's there & what his purpose is exactly...then when he finds the fox he sees a reflection of his own self being hurt & needy and learns that his compassion includes himself...he must not fight and hate against his pain because that means fighting and hating against himself, he must accept it in order to heal. Then when he falls asleep he finally embraces and accepts all of his parts (the hope, the doubts & the the pain) and when he wakes up the feelings are gone...and instead he sees beautiful bright stars...

Do you ever watch something and sit there for five minutes completely stunned by what you have just seen? Then after those five minutes pass it all hits you at once? You find yourself crying because of the beauty of it all, that someone was able to understand something so important that you never knew you needed in the first place? This is what this video did for me. Thank you, Sigur Ros.

Every time I watch this I'm like, "naa I won't cry this time." Then I cry.. every time. 💛

My cat died today. This came to my mind and soothe me. My little cat will be well, wherever he may be.

I think: -The Man is non-existing. This the tale of a wounded Fox, that got Lost!! -The Fox is feels like it lost it's way. "Every field feels like the next". In desperation it asked directions even to a snail. -Snail asks if the fox wants to be guided out from darkness. "You're not afraid are you?" The snail knows the Fox state. -Snail leads fox to the woods. Fox states "Oh snail... this is a terrible place." It knows creatures go to die there. -Within the woods, the fox asks "Why does everything have to change..." It knows it's hurt. -Snail whispers "Don't be afraid." Shes comforting the Fox into it's ending stage. -Fox says "I don't know what i should do..." Fox cries. It feels pain. -"Be brave little one..... be brave", it's the way of the snail saying don't worry. Go in peace. -Fox travels to a big tree. And goes to sleep. -"Sleep little one.... sleep. And when you wake... I might be gone..." The snail is leaving the fox in peace to let nature carry it's own path, and take the once scared, hurt and lost fox, now has a calm, gentle, sleeping fox. -"Look around... You've found your own way home" were the snails last words. The fox is now one with the forest and nature. Thats what i feel about this....

After 10 years im still crying.

This always reminds me when I was in the moment of getting our dog put to sleep at the vet. As soon as the fox cries, it triggers some very powerful emotions in me and my heart cracks every time.

Guys, once try to listen this song in your headphones meanwhile you walk in a forest or wherever surrounded by nature.. Try to wandering purposeless, touch the trees, feel the air on your skin, smell the scents, see things for what they really are, marvel of everything and breathe...You will start to feel part of everything as it really is. That was the time when I was wandering through the forest for a few kilometers every summer night. That forest was between my village and my friend's. Those misty nights... Endless Sigur Ros on playlist. Moon and stars leading the way through the dark. Best time of my life. Now I live in different part of planet. On a different continent. Unable to see my parents for 7 years already. What happened to that forest? What happened to those summer nights? Why do things always have to change? This would be forever in my heart. Forever.

Wow this brings so many memories from the last time I was playing in a field just like this with my rescue dog. He was a Collie, and in fact I found a snail and took him back with me. It symbolized change for me. And we went back home ... not too much longer we had to move but so cool ♥️

here is what i thought about this. the man who lost his way and the snail are the same who wanted to go home the fox symbolizes the troubled man's fear. the snail who served as his inner voice that guided him in the wilderness asked him to "be brave" when he encountered the fox So he carried his fear out of the jungle he woke up in another day and the fox is gone. we saw in the last part that the snail meeting some other snail which means he is home

Not enough people have seen this magnificent piece of work.

The man is wandering, lost and the snail is his inner voice, giving him hope and telling him to be brave. The man encounters his own injured self in the 'bad place', and the snail tells him to be brave. So the man embraces it, and carries it with him, instead of recoiling. After settling down to sleep with it, and fully embrace himself the snail leaves... the fox dies, revealing that he can handle the worst possible outcome. It has no relevance to him anymore. The snail leaves, and the man looks up at the stars, ready to guide himself... :) love all these different interpretations!

Have had trouble getting my emotions out lately... This me me burst into tears. I am speechless. So grateful for being a part of reality... The story that is being told here from my own interpretation is absolutely beautiful and stunning. Thanks you so much Sigur Ros, Nick Abrahams and everyone else involved in the making of this masterpiece.

This is what Lord Baelish was going through after he found out that Catelyn Stark died.

here's my interpretation: The man is death, coming for the fox. The snail is an angel, accompanying Death to take the fox "home". The voice is the fox's, so the early dialogue doesn't take place when you think it does. The scary forest with the screaming represents the scary and painful feeling of dying. When the fox sees them, he doesn't want to go, but eventually comes to accept it. Death takes the fox's physical body into the Earth (which is not the same fox btw, they got a roadkill one for that scene). The second snail at the very end is the fox in angel form. I'm probably wrong, but it's the only way it makes sense to me. The other ones in these comments are so random and dry.

I have no words...... the fox broke my heart, although everything has a purpose in the video. Everything is beautiful.

Life can be so random. I was so sure I was going the right path and then in a split second, the world flips upside down. It sucks to know some of our problems can be so insignificant when compared to losing someone you love to natural causes, but when you invest all of your heart into a stranger, you risk the same pains as those of your closest loved ones. I wish there were signs pointing in the correct direction, without heartache on every road crossing, but I also wonder if such life is even worth living. These little things that happen to us throughout our journeys can have such immense impacts later on, and not always for the better. It's hard to let go and forget some of the most painful moments of your life's past, even when those awful moments you keep seeing repeated over and over today. Makes you wonder if you are what your past was. I don't want to be that, but I struggle sometimes wondering if I even have a choice. I guess I can truly say I'm lost and unsure which way to go

My interpretation is that the man just got out of a relationship and has become "lost". Whether the snail is in the same boat is hard to say, but im guessing so, because it found a partner in the end as well. The snail and the man help each-other find "home" or a sense of normality. The man eventually reaches the fox. Notice the dark lighting, the fear the man feels, it conveys dark emotions and sadness. The fox is wounded or broken, just like the relationship. With the help of the snail, the man finally has the courage to drag it out of the recesses of his mind and let it die for good (Why the fox is shown decomposing). After this the man is finally free, and the snail has finally met someone for itself, which is why they must part ways. A beautiful story of human relationships, our fears, and hope.

I think this film is a look into Agent Bill Wilson's life after the prologue scene for The Dark Knight Rises... apparently he has lost his memory in the plane crash (but is otherwise uninjured) and wanders the fields, looking for an abstract concept he calls 'home'... perhaps the snail is a manifestation of his own psyche, a greater power that refers to him as 'little one' in an attempt to finally allow Wilson to come to terms with the fact that he's a small guy. I hope that Wilson doesn't return to the CIA after this, and that his experiences once (if?) he regains his memory urge him to retire into a serene, pastoral life such as what is pictured here. 9/10 Bravo Nolan

I love love love this film / video. It evokes such a sense of loss yet wonder, simplicity and deep, deep internal conflict. This film makes me feel alive and alone and small, yet one with the world.

Every time I watch this video, or even when I just listen to it...brings me to tears. Such a true and honest representation of life and our surroundings that almost everyone is able to relate to. We all experience feeling lost and desperate in our "inner voice" that is told by the man....and the inner voice or "higher power" that we yearn to hear, which is portrayed by the snail. Seriously so damn moving.

We have this mountain we call table rock in my city. It's a popular spot to watch the sunset and sunrise, also to see the entire downtown area. This song came on while I was watching the sunset and I never felt so connected with my surroundings. As the sky changed color, I sat and watched for hours, replaying this song. As the sun was finally going down I found my self tearing up because for the first time I discovered something truly beautiful.

Perhaps the snail's wondering why someone would pet a fox, before leaving him out to decompose.

The vibrations of this song like many of Sigur Ros reach my soul and I don't know if they make it sadder or happier but they certainly touch it.

The more I think about it, the more it appears this is an interpretation of CIA's journey in limbo after the plane crash. Whereas CIA's saga started with him as a confident, hotheaded embodiment of Central Intelligence Agency concealing his insecurity, Little One is both humble and honest about his limitations. Dazed, he raises his unknowing eyes to beseech the heavens for guidance, as unaware of his surrounding sas he was when he first filed the flight plan but much more self aware. And yet he retains that essential spark of heroism, that drive to seek resolution even in the midst of a desolate waste. Throughout the journey he meets embodiments of the adversity and allies he encountered in life. The snail, its help gratefully accepted, is essential to guiding CIA "home" as his loyal pilots were, and as a maternal figure (despite being a hermaphrodite) is at least as valuable a prize as Dr Pavel. Throughout their journey into the forest she encourages CIA to be brave, building up his shattered conviction. The fox embodies both Bane, growling to appear big, and CIA's own devotion to duty. He learns to show compassion to the fox's wounds, just as all men have internal wounds no matter how big they are. With the snail's help, he gets the fox on board even without anyone to call it in, trusting in his own resolve. The final scenes deal with loss and acceptance. Again, we see CIA incapacitated by mysterious forces. Again, what was once a formidable figure is laid low and humbled-despite all of CIA's efforts. He is even abandoned by the snail, his guide, his hope. But when he awakens he gains newfound perspective and character, able to find his own way home without an external source of validation and without pretending to be an entire agency; he has been reduced from CIA to Bill Wilson, absolved of both the responsibilities and privileges of his past life. Like the plane, the fox is irrevocably damaged, and it takes great courage for Bill to come to terms with its death, accepting that his journey has no survivors. In short, by accepting and letting go of deep personal loss, Little One becomes a Big Guy, pulling off the mask of pretension in death despite the pain it entails. Bravo, Sigur Ross and Nolan.

I saw this short film a couple years ago, and it was the first time I heard Sigur Rós, and I loved them. When it comes to the story, it is beautiful and well crafted... and deeply moving

The Valtari album in itself is one of my favourites but this piece, combined with such a heart felt video, reaches parts of my soul I thought I'd never find. This is my true meaning of beautiful.
