Once a sleepy beach town, Sihanoukville is undergoing a rapid transformation, but with crime, gambling and displacement of locals on the rise, is this development good for the city? Luckily, Koh Rong is another world; a heavenly island only an hour away. Here's the story of Jekyll and Hyde on the Khmer coast.
Sihanoukville's transformation 1:03
Sihanoukville's problems - 1:40
How to get there - 2:38
Ouchheuteal Beach/pollution - 3:04
Otres Beach - 4:54
Red Light District - 5:47
Pool at the Girly Bar - 6:51
Ferry to Koh Rong - 8:34
Koh Rong - 9:01
Longset/4K Beach - 10:12
Outro - 11:24
These are the essentials to Sihanoukville and Koh Rong shot completely on my iPhone X with Filmic Pro.

Is Koh Rong destined to go down the same path as Sihanoukville? Comment below.
@macarenapi4926
@macarenapi4926 5 лет назад
For sure it will go the same path as islands like PhiPhi or Phuket if people doesn't keep the secret hidden. Tourist will keep going and going and it will be destroyed. In my opinion is it quite risky talk about these places all around the internet. I understand that it is cool to know but I think it is better to learn about these places along the road, when you are backpacking and you will meet someone and they tell you "you have to go there" and you listen to them. That would limit the kind of person that goes there, instead of just post about this online and so that a bunch of westerners decide that this island is the new fashionable tourist destination. Do not take me wrong, I am not saying this to criticize your video, but I think it is important to think about it.

@@macarenapi4926 Didn't you pay attention to the video??? It's already too late to keep it as a hidden gem. The Chinese have taken over and bring in large groups of gamblers because the business now in Sihanoukville is Casinos.
@funkyalfonso
@funkyalfonso 5 лет назад
@@macarenapi4926 I agree. You mention Koh Phi Phi. I lived and worked in that area late1970's early 1980's. There were only about 8 little bungalows and the people there were fishermen. To say it has changed is an understatement. As is Phuket. Patong before there was electricity there was wonderful. Now it is sleazeville. In those days the only way to find out about places was to talk to locals or the few travelers there. I can never go back as it is all too awful.

I have been sihanoukville 4 times since 2012 and although it’s not the amazing backpackers heaven, I still enjoyed 2015 possibly because I’m a gambler. **My friend just got back from there in feb and said there was a casino on the pier on kohrong**

The Chinese are taking over the world not with bullets or bombs but money(some clean and some not so clean), they are ruining alot of Countries with their greed. The government of Cambodia is also to blame for this problem, they are corrupt also.

I should see this video a month ago. ) First time I was in Sihanoukville five years ago, it was a little town with beaches, cool cafes etc and all this time I wanted to go back there. I did it a month ago. I am very disappointed, now this will be second Macau. The spirit of the old city is dead. Only Chinese, building and casinos.

I have lived in Thailand for about 15 years. Last went to Sihaoukville in 2014 before the Chinese invasion. Sorry to say but the Chinese tour groups have ruined Thailand too. The place to go right now for peace and no tour groups is Southern Myanmar. Especially the Dawei peninsula. Very quiet and peaceful deserted beaches and not ruined by mass tourism......yet

From my personal experience in sihanoukville, if anyone's planning to stay a few nights, skip sihanoukville town and head to otres area (south of sihanoukville). Otres village are divided into sections as to make it easier for locating reasons. Otres 1 beach, otres 2 beach (further south from otres 1) and otres village (inland, distant from the beach and near the ou trojak jet river) are the areas to check out. Even the ones that are a bit distant from the beach are quite nice as most of the accommodations are run by westerners.

Good video and good commentary. My Cambodian wife and I went to Sihanoukville and Koh Rong Samloem in March of 2017, and we really enjoyed touring Sihanoukville. For the most part, it was a beautiful city. We returned last November, and the experience was completely different. It's a mess. Koh Rong Samloem is still beautiful, for now. We always stay on the west side of the island. The people working at our resort said it may not remain this way much longer.

Sihanoukville is without a doubt the worst place I’ve ever been in my life. The place is just one big building site. The locals have been driven out to make way for casinos, striplubs and brothels. The place is overrun with wealthy Chinese with too much money and not enough manners. We made the mistake of spending two nights in sihanoukville (one on our way to koh rong and one on our way back from koh rong samloem) and I’ve never felt so on edge in my life. DO NOT STAY HERE! Go straight to the islands because they really are heaven on Earth. It’s only a matter of time before the islands suffer the same fate so if you plan on going DO IT SOON!

That video must have been taken a little while ago, I was there 4 days ago, and it's way worse than that. In fact I'm not sure where the city footage was taken, now it's impossible to walk around, they have opened 86 casinos (with still unfinished constructions) and have started another 100 new ones, latest sites are jumbo size Las Vegas style. We were are the very end Of serendipity beach (sunset lounge hotel and restaurant) and couldn't make it to centre without being crushed by construction /cement trucks. You need a taxi to go anywhere We went to Koh Rong. I looks like we stayed at the same place (white beach bungalows), very recommendable because it's at the very end of the main beach , away from bar noises. 4K beach is walkable from the bungalows (long beach walk but no need to risk your life on scooter), and worth the time and effort. (There too, Chinese investors are taking over some 60% of the island which they are clear cutting and burning now ****go before they start destroying the place like they did in Sihanoukville. ) DON'T forget to do the afternoon boat excursion to see the other beaches Water is rough, but the experience is worth it ** BIG thank you Rihanna at White beach bungalows for your advice and help, this was a very good way to end a 5 week trip to Vietnam & Cambodia. PS: I will go back to Cambodia regardless of the corrupted government selling land to the chinese investors, and displacing their own poor ppl, to see few more islands ( incl the Vietnam island quo phuc). Cambodia is rapidly changing, go soon. Cheers

Jean-Bernard Joly Oh wow, that sounds terrible. This episode was shot in April 2018 so, seeing as though everything is changing so quickly there, it’s easy to see how this now seems dated. That indeed was the bungalow on KR (only one with AC). Cambodia is beautiful, but there are places you can’t sugarcoat yet places to escape to and that’s the narrative of this episode.

Your bang on! We stopped for a night before Sanloem, The Big Easy Hostel said the city suffers from water shortages due to lack of infrastructure. When we arrived along a dirt track which I presume will be a road it compared to what I'd see as a war zone! very sad indeed.

Thanks for sharing and being brutally honest Mitchell. It is so sad to see what has happened to Sihanoukville and soon, all the coast of Cambodia. I was there in 2003 and fell in love with Sihanoukville. While on the beach, watching the sunset, with a drink in hand, I told myself I will return here one day because I fell in love with the beach and people. Since then I have not returned...all my family and friends in Cambodia told me it is not the same place when I was last there. It is infested and has been taken over by the Chinese. Corruption and the underground world has taken over. Most of the local, honest, loving Khmer people have been chased out. The government sold their souls and Srok Khmer to China. I hope one day in the future, Cambodia will find a Khmer loving leader; but it might be too late by then.

So what I am thinking is simply don't go to Cambodia if your primary intention is to find a beach vacation. There are other locations in SE Asia where you can find the outstanding beach experience if that is your primary vacation goal. But there are many other reasons to go to Cambodia, other than the beach, so it still remains a worthwhile destination.

Thanks for this realistic tour. I've been to Sihanoukville many times beginning in 2008, last time in 2017. It used to be awesome. The Chinese writing was on the wall by that time. Won't go back. It can be dangerous and maybe that's why you didn't mention Hun Sen's dictatorship which has made all this Chinese destruction possible, not to mention the rape of the Northern hardwood forests and so much more. Noticed you stayed at Cloud 9 in "my room". Hope at least they're still hanging on.... and Koh Rong Samloem.

I've been to Sihanoukville and I also saw those trash on the beach. It has also a lot of Chinese Casinos that makes it ugly and full of trash.
