She may be crude compared to modern helicopters but she has tons of character and can still get the job done. And that monster radial engine just has that sound you can’t get anywhere else.

to clear up any confusion the H-34 is the US military designation..S-58 is the Sikorskry civilian designation..both radial engine powered..the turbine engine powered version was called the S-58T which has a pratt &whitney PT6T twin pack engine installed instead of the Radial engine
When I was a child.50 years ago, I look like this helicopter fly in the sky at my home town in Thailand. During Vietnam war. There are a lot GI and materials for war.
Leute das waren die Helikopter die Helmut Schmidt anforderte um die Leute von den Dächern zu holen damals in Hamburg bei der Sturmflut! Tolle Maschine.
The S58 was a real work horse, a friend of mine who was a crew chief on them in Vietnam said they would sling load more weight than the first Bell Huey's that entered service in Vietnam.
Robert Forbes Agreed. May have been a unconventional ground vector to make sure everything was in working order although it did look like an amateur so maybe the pilot was letting someone "control" the chopper with his help of course because once they started to go for transitional power flight the flight got way more precise so that may be when the pilot took complete control. I have never piloted this particular chopper but I have piloted a H-5 and a S-92 which are comparable in size with the S-92 being considerably larger. These older piston powered models are a lot more likely to throw a widow maker at you so who knows maybe the pilot was having a shitty day lol
gotta agree there. I didn't really appreciate the Ol Hog until I started flying UH-1B's, 3000hrs and only two partial engine failures. Anything over 4500 msl and you really needed to finesse it.

except the soviet multipurpose (military and civilian was the same) helicopter Kamov Ka26: many of them are still in service today, the most in agricultural works...
"Twin-Pac" is a trademark for the Pratt-Whitney PT-6T-3. Those models are equipped with two P.W. turbine engines instead of a single Wright R-1820 Cyclone Radial.
