Why does stone turn red?
The light brown limestone changes in colour to reddish brown at 250-300 °C and becomes even more red at 400 °C because of the hydrated iron oxide content. At higher temperatures (above 600 °C) the oxidation of calcium carbonate occurs so the material becomes a white powder.
