This is a great video! How come you gouge out the bowl as the first thing? I see people do this differently sometimes.

I’m just getting started in carving and have enjoyed several of your videos. I was curious why you always move the handle of the roughing gouge towards the center of your work when you’re prying out the chips. My inclination would be to pull it back to try and lift the chips out of the bowl (like you do with the crooked gouge near the end of the video). Is this to protect the tool or the work, or just personal preference. Thanks!

Thank you for the kind words. It is what the tool tells me how it wants to be used. I can feel the resistance change and go with what wood and bevel dictate. Hard to describe. Cheers

@@woodsmansfinest3814 the bent gouge is made by Kharkiv Forge in the Ukraine, no? i have the same gouge from them.

@@teeeff5179 Fadir, my brand, my design and you have a similar one but not that one. Bevel angle and sweep are different.

Made to my specs by my collab partners. I'm the carver with forging experience, they got the setup.
