A tip for you @wolfpack345, I notice you always try to measure speed directly off the bow for the most accurate reading but there is a chart labeled Klarung in the periscope screen that gives you correction values based on your speed and bearing offset to the target. Bearing offset is horizontal, your speed is vertical, and the intersecting box is the speed to add to the target speed reading (subtracted if you are reversing). Very useful to get speed readings while on the move and in a sub-optimal position. Hopefully I explained it clearly
I remember playing Cold Waters and just spending what felt lije an eternity watching a Torp slam into my sub, sending us to a watery death. Of course, it only took seconds, but my brain just slowed down the moment, trying to somehow survive That, and depth charges in a WW2 sub are horrendous. Trapped in an iron coffin and forced to hear explosions detonate all around you....
Well, for a VIIB… that’s a good depth. Rated to 200m or 220m (depending on sources), crush depth calculated well postwar with newer knowledge and tools says around 250-300m - German engineering was quite into safety factors. (Albeit they got it pretty much correct with the XXI and XXIII types, the intersection of the main tube and the lower battery tube turns out to be less resistant than they thought, so they only has 10-20m between calculated then and calculated today crush depth.) The damage does not matter unless the pressure hull is actually damaged. Shredded periscopes and deck armaments do not matter. And you can close off the fin if it leaks. Not good for the equipment there (torpedo computer, attack periscope, etc), but if you sink, it’s not any better for them, right? The VIIC/41 could go deeper, (rated around 250n) the (ordered, but never even laid down) VIIC/42 would have been rated for 500m! Imagine that in WWII.
what a rollercoaster! This Mediterranean series is probably my favorite you've done and I look forward to each one. U-75 is a tough little boat, just imagine BDU's reaction when you pull in like "surprise we're not dead"
"243 meters deep after several close hits from depth charges blowing ballasts didn't even work the first time, honestly command. We're just as surprised we're not dead. No radio, no periscopes and no hydrophones. We were functionally blind and our deck guns were all beyond repair" "Send the engineers and designer a gift basket, we'd all be dead without them"
Yes - that is always so annoying. SH3 and SH4 should have been set up to only allow course changes in 5 degree increments - so, 200 degrees, or 195 or 205 if you click the wrong part of the compass. Much easier to correct.
@@timonsolus yeah but manual rudder control can be very tedious when navigating on the nav map. The amount of precision you’d lose out on by being 1 degree off versus five is well. Five times less
From the 1957 film 'The Enemy Below': "We build 'em good in Germany, eh, Heine?", spoken by the sub captain( Von Stolberg - Kurt Jurgens) to his first officer.
Listening to the hull groaning under all that pressure made me pucker for you, Wolfpack. I'm glad you managed to make it out. This will be a story for the boys back at Port while you get repaired.
I'm not sure whether it was some fluke or some mods giving AI serious brainlift, but manuevering of that destroyer captain was pure brillance. He unassumingly positions himaself between the boat and didn't open up untill he was absolutely positive about the boat's position and when it was solidly within the no-escape zone. Damn, this hound didn't just want to stave off the wolf, it went for a throat!
This was by far the most thrilling episode so far. It really felt like the Gibraltar scene from Das Boot. Really glad to see you've made it back to La Spezia!
I was shocked, when Wolfpack said it. I figured that the crewmen could be injured during attacks, or drown in flooding compartments, but to die of a simple accident? ...I mean, sure, it could absolutely happen in reality, I just didn't expect that from SH3. Poor guy. Kriegsmarine or otherwise, that's a lousy, undignified, painful way to go. Now, re-watching the series, every time I see the decks and tower awash, I had worried a crewman would be missing next time the waves receded, and now, it seems like that worry may have been justified. Yikes.
@@CurtisRooney Agreeing with all you said but one thing; luckily for poor old Thomsen, it seemed that his death was pretty painless. Wolfpack said he hit his head and was gone instantly (47:50)
After 26 episodes following this uboat and its crew i cannot explain how actually nervous i got irl, like actually sweating praying the flooding to stop looking at that depth plummet. Holy shit. I love this series
when I was Afghanistan, our squad was on missions from 9pm to 3am. We only did night missions for 2 months because our squad leader was only a sergeant and every other squad had a SSGT. So we got stuck with night missions. Luminosity was everything. I had pvs-7, which gives you zero depth perception. I learned to walk with them, but I ate shit so much. I remember watching my team leader trip on this big ass hill and do about 20 flips it was so funny. He screamed "I'm ok" at like 3 AM while we were trying to he sneaky. I couldn't stop laughing.
That guy sleeping in the bunk is hilarious! He would wake up and go "I slept well, did I miss anything important?" "Yeah, we almost died. We got depth charged and sank to 243 metres before we started coming up again." "Oh, ok. Anything else?"
Could it be much more referring to the scene of Gibraltar in the movie "Das Boot"? This was... intense. I felt the pressure of the uboat hull and the silent panic of your crew. ... A shovel of sand, god put a shovel of sand below our keel!
Nothing less than breathtaking...I held my fingers crossed till I saw you were safe and sound along Italian coast. Welcome back to the world of the living!
No yet kamaraden... But in Das Boot they spend if I remember correctly hours in depth over 200 meters... They barely lost all oxygen to breathe.. But I love Silent Hunter III for this atmosphere
What a nailbiter of an Episode! I got so nervous watching that damn needle move further and further into the red, willing it to stop as it just crept onwards.... Not sure If it's a game feature or my Imagination in that moment but when the crewmember gave the depth reading of two-four-zero meters i could swear he had a nervous and agitated undertone in his voice... Awesome Episode, glad you made it back alive!
Holy shit, man! That was beyond insane... I really appreciate how well you immerse us with you. Now I've gotta work this adrenaline off before I'll be able to sleep. :D
That was first time i saw a AI drop DC that accuratelly on that depth. Either luck or skill of crew but damn that was close. I feel like only mistake you did was speeding up after receiving that hit. boat was angled into diving so speeding up could kill it. Backing up might been a better solution there. But in the end it doesnt matter because boat survived. Great vid as always!
It is obviously one. After surfacing in the straight and breaking through on the surface … But of course, that sets us up for the deadly air attack in port.
@@advorak8529The entire game is pretty much one giant Das Boot reference. But I was directly quoting “Not Yet Kameraden” from the film and title of the video. The game also uses several sounds and voice lines from Das Boot, so it is pretty much “Das Boot: The Game.”
Having just finished binging your SH3 Type IX career playlist, seeing you have to dive below 200m combined with still being attacked by a destroyer had me fearing the worst, but by some miracle you managed to survive it. Very entertaining and excited to see where the next patrol takes you
Wow WP! Wow! That was very good .... (Insert slow golf clap)! Very good indeed! Your cinema, editing and narration is making me feel like I am watching a legit documentary! 🍻 too a tough little UBoat!
Impressive amount of suspense and dread evoked from the sound design. Had me on the edge of my seat there. Your narration certainly added to that as well.
@Wolfpack345 Keep up with the series as long the U75 is seaworthy, it’s fascinating to watch the silent hunter 3. It was nerve racking as the destroyer damage the U-boat
Beautiful - so many emotions. It reminded me of scenes from the movie Das Boot. For a moment I thought it would never rise again and the hull would be crushed by the pressure. Congratulations.
Hope you get better soon, sounds like you have a some flu or alike. The episode is a joy to see, hope for more to come mate! PS: Its really great how much cinematic quality the episodes are getting these days, good effort
I love your channel and have been following it for a long while and enjoying all of your theatres and branches of operations; this I think, is one of the very best you have produced. Thank you.
love the content keep it really have enjoyed all silent hunter series episodes watched all wolfs of the Atlantic campaign that depth charge scene had my heart racing very grateful the boat came back up after blow ballast
Damn! That was one of the most intense episodes I've seen! Just watching the depth gauge man 😬 can't even imagine how that must have felt for a sub crew irl.
If they're dropping charges a quick knuckle turn can be useful. Sure you're not exactly silent any more while knuckling but they're deaf for a few seconds while rolling charges because of all the splashes and the sudden course change can throw off their aim. Better yet if they don't catch that you turned in all the noise you may be able to slip out of their asdic cone when you drop back to silent after the turn. No garantee on that though of course.
That was pretty close, dude. Exciting episode! I've been sunk once on similar circumstances just off the Azores. Learned the hard way and proceeded to invest in a lot of Damage Control officers and crewmen. It paid off big time next time I played.
Good to see that your luck is still holding on, would have been a shame if U-75's adventures ended here. Happy hunting Herrn Kaleun, Halls und Beinbruch !!!
Hull condition at a generous 25%, sounds of a temporarily sinking submarine... Cold Waters would make you go back out on patrol after a drydock stay of no more than 72 hours.
After the patrols and what he's managed tom achieve i heavily doubt it as by this point he would probably be rated one of the better/best submarine captains in Germany
It was too risky surface attack in such a short distance and calm weather. And then you didn't crash dive after they spot you but continue calculating attack, I thought it's suicide and you just tired of this series. After that I was sure, THIS IS certainly the end many times, until the depth became less than 200. Wow... this is one of the best and most thrilling gameplay series in the whole RU-vid! Keep going! 👍
Really engrossed by this series! I hope you continue it soon! Also been meaning to ask; What is the mod to add those directionless dots, to replace the ship markers on the zoomed in map? I can find one for SH4, but not SH3 Onealex.
man when he cut to the surface when he was getting depth charged i was afraid this was gonna end like that one Pacific campaign he did where he was returning home only to get sunk by a Japanese destroyer
Getting a little sloppy. You've been playing too much War On The Sea! Hehe, but, holy cow, this one was intense. I love these kinds of close encounters. Hopefully you'll be able to seek revenge on your next patrol.
you sat there, surfaced, forever, trying to fugure out what to do (that's not really like you....but it Is like Tonci)....Of Course you got spotted This is THE biggest nail biter episode!!
