This video lecturer is about Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR). Here you will learn the structure (construction), working and vi characteristic of a silicon controlled rectifier (SCR).
SCR is a prominent member of thyristor family.
The three basic modes of operation of SCR (silicon controlled rectifier) are discussed here. These modes of operation of SCR thyristor are-
Reverse blocking mode of SCR
Forward blocking mode of SCR (off state of SCR)
Forward conduction mode of SCR (on state of SCR)
SCR is a 4 layer, 3 junction, pnpn semiconductor switching device. Silicon controlled rectifier is a unidirectional device.
It is interesting to note that, silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) cannot be turned off using gate pulse, once it is turned on by applying positive Gate pulse.
But it is possible to turn off the SCR by reducing the anode voltage or by making cathode positive with respect to anode i.e. By operating the SCR in Reverse blocking mode.
Another important member of thyristor family known as gate turnoff thyristor (GTO) can be turned off by applying negative pulse at the gate.
