Second in a requested series on thinning silicone without Naptha or other hydrocarbon solvents.
This method produces a very silky and light weight foam. This method can be tricky, so watch the entire video.

Fun fact: The key to make a SUPER-SOFT & SPONGEY Memory foam is: The Foam Itself. If you have a spare electric stirrer or are very patient and strong, you're going to have to stir the ingredients with a surfactant (casein, eggs, etc.) tediously until the whole mixture reaches a foam texture (like soap bubbles). Once it reaches a super foamy texture, you shape it however you want on a pan and bake it at a low - med temperature for 1-2 hours or until it reaches that sponge-ness you like. The key to a foam is that the foam has to cure AS A FOAM! P.S.: Adding Fiber into the foam like cotton, linen, etc could help in giving the foam it's shape.

I’ve been 3d printing molds for foam silicone. My favorite so far is a stellated dodecahedron that I’ve been making foamed silicone with and the cat just loves them, but i use spray silicone to thin plus baking soda and vinegar to expand. The baking soda speeds cure time as well it seems. I will try this method next. I wonder what causes this recipe to foam and is the air bubble size adjustable?
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 2 года назад
Air bubble size I am sure is adjustable. The baking soda also holds moisture so will also cure silicone. The foam is a basic science experiment, as a kid we all made volcanoes in science class, and how type A fire extinguishers work. I love your idea, as I have a cat. Thanks for sharing.

I have a mold for a ceiling medallion. I am trying to figure out what light weight material to pour in that will give details and allow for painting. Any ideas?

Certainly not silicone. Have you considered Plaster of Paris? I can't imagine anything being much lighter than PP.

Wau - tried it right away - but the silicone didn't absorb the glycerine it didn't foam up and if anything it coagulated fast into a lump. Used small tube of clear silicone from plastic padding and 85% vegetable glycerol from the pharmacy - any hints? Would like to use it for stopmotion puppets
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable Год назад
Yes, use the white 100% silicone. The type that emits Acetic Acid during cure. And it takes a lot of mixing. Don't use the clear. The Glycerine will weep out during cure. It takes a long time. That sounds cool. You have a wire frame? I can see this working for that.

Sir, I'm searching for non toxic foam to replace PU foam for making nose filters, is it possible to make open pore supersoft sponge /faom with silicon mix? Please try and send me the process.

It is possible, and the video will show you how. Good luck! Discovery is a challenge, but stick with it! PU is also non-toxic, you should not rule it out.

I am trying to find a recipe for a stretchier silicone. Is there a way to increase the elasticity and stay environmentaly friendly? Any help is appreciated, thx!
@GEOsustainable
@GEOsustainable 3 года назад
You may want to look into Latex or Rubber. They are stretchy and natural. I don't know how to make silicone more stretchy. If I ever run across a method, I will share it.

You mix the tube silicone with pure silicone oil. The more oil, the softer and stretchier it will be. It will work up to a 1:1 ratio, but try to stay under that (ie. less oil than tube silicone) or else it will never set and you'll just have a sticky blob. I use it for mold making all the time.

It did not notice that. I made several batches, perhaps I showed a different one than that I demonstrated. However, it can shrink, depending on how much Glycerine you use. Good eye.
