Silky Smooth Bosch Electronic shifting with Rohloff Speedhub on a Catrike Dumont

Many thanks to Mechanic Paul at RecumbentPDX for this very impromtu interview. This is a super sweet shifting setup available from Bosch to use exclusively with the Rohloff Speedhub. Paul has it installed on a Catrike Dumont as he explains some of it's silky smooth features. There were lots of people in the store getting ready to go a group ride as you can hear.

That's awesome with the internal hub working with the motor. But I am still getting used to the eye watering prices. I was interested in a less expensive Nuvinci, because I like the idea of not having the derailer to fiddle with. I even bought a single speed bicycle with a belt as an experiment of living with no chain. I think a trike with a belt and internal hub would be the ultimate, but I would probably need to sell my car.

I'm now an eCat Dumont with the standard eleven speed derailleur. I am so used to the old way that I don't think about shifting. It comes with experience and I don't think about it. Look at the road ahead, anticipate and enjoy the ride. I rarely look at the control head except to occasionally check the battery level. The Bosch system is so smooth and helpful. I gear to put out the same effort and I go farther a bit faster while getting good exercise. I think of myself and Bosch as partners enjoying the trike experience. EB (electric blue, his name) is now eEB. Yes, I'm loving it especially if the Tucson monsoon rains and flooding will give me a day now and then to ride!

Sylvia.. Looks great in the shop, but once out in the sun, te screen goes dark and you can't see any of the gauges.. Great for night riding... I do really like the electronic shifting of the Rohloff, I have trouble seeing what gear i'm in, (the angle is wrong to read the markings on the shifter. Would probably be easier to see on a standard bike with horizontal handlebars.

do you have this exact color screen or the smaller black and white one? I was looking at this exact setup with this screen but would have to have it shipped.....I could see the smaller black and white screen OK in the sun.....but haven't seen the bigger color screen....and probably won't get a chance before buying it.

@@sharilove6222 Currently, i have the Bafang 750c full color with Watts meter... The 961 and 965 are Sunlight readable.. But all the Bafangs with full color are not useful because they only have "Standard TFT"..NOT "Sunlight Readable TFT" There is a huge difference.. the later models of Garmin edge use the "Sunlight Readable TFT technology" I wish Bafang would do the same. Because i have a Solar powered Etrike, it is crucial to monitor the Watts.. but the displays you can see in direct sunlight (961 and 965) don't have Watts and don't work with 52v batteries.. It is time that Bafang update their full color displays to "Sunlight readable TFT Technology" The screens are useless if you can't see the data in the sun... (isn't that where we ride ebikes..) Most of us don't ride at night. LOL PEACE

I am getting mine with the Rohloff and a Shimano edrive but shifting will be manual.

Have you ever used signal lights on your trike? I know that is off subject but like you said we can only dream of a system like that because it is way beyond most people's budget. Thanks for sharing this it is great to see the new e assists out there. Have a great day and go turtle power.

Bummer, I would like a Rohloff, but the twist shift is ... hard for me to use - the electronic shifting would be GREAT (but NOT with the assist - I need/want to use my legs (you know hat they say - use =it or loose it - well, because of a Neurological disorder its even more important for my muscles to get challenged often!).

I recently saw the Rohloff handle had been repositioned so that you can use it to the side with your hand on top, if that makes sense. Ask at RecumbentPDX, that’s where I saw it. Best of luck!!

Great interview, looks interesting. But….what happens if you have a electric malfunction ? Can you shift manually?

@@TravelsByTrike same answer as any other external clickbox rohloff. Pull off the clickbox and use a hex wrench to shift by hand. Not convenient, but there when essential

Sylvia, I like the Dumont, but I don't think I could afford that electric. It is great, but wow is it expensive. If you get a chance, ask them about the price of that trike. Maybe our guesses are way off. ?? It would be nice to have the system think for you. It's bad to forget to shift down when coming to a stop. Be well and stay safe, bf

Nah, the guesses are about right. We wrote up one today for a bit over $11k. The A12 thru axle Rohloffs are a dream to ride (but a nightmare to build!)

I rode a trike at Recumbent Cycle Con 2 years ago that had automatic shifting. It was fast and smooth and very expensive.

Yes, this was a crowd over 60 and we are all vaccinated. We tried to comply with shop rules to wear a mask while in the shop. Everyone was going in and out, haha!
