To be fair, sans' boss fight is easier than base radiance from hollow knight , i saw people say that what made it hard were the random patterns which uhhhhh i mean every video game boss has those, except for souls like bosses, you can manipulate their behaviour by moving around, or just not moving

i'd say he somehow stopped chara from resetting, since they also have a dt soul. maybe when he got ill with the buttercups, chara wanted to reset to fix it, but was convinced by asgore not to because he didn't want to forget them. that's me speculating though.

its beyond me how people cant seem to find a balance between "apathetic jokester" and "depressed dude who cares a lot about his friends and family" to a certain degree, hes both. but a big chunk of interpretations i see of him massively overdo either one or the other. its very rarely a good blend of both and its annoying.

I'd say he's more... Apathetic? Maybe somewhat depressed, but not much, it's clear he cares about everyone a great deal. I honestly have no idea where the edgy part came from, his character is already badass enough as it is but ok. However, it also seems like he's known about the resets for a looong time (maybe Flowey?) so he just kinda... Doesn't care anymore? Like, he said it himself after all "Honestly, it makes it kinda hard to give it my all" There are many possible responses to the revelation that nothing you do really matters and your destiny is outside of your own control. Sans decided to choose the most Sans approach possible. *Viving*

Papyrus is strong, but he's too kind to use his full power

His boss fight i think was pretty underwhelming, i don't know if it's because i played alot of top down 2d games with a keyboard that i'm good with undertale's control but yeah, sans has no place on every "top 20 hardest bosses" like you never see abs rad on there or like the scav king from rain world

Being the most famous character from one of the most famous games in history, and also being famous for being difficult, it's no surprise he has a reputation as one of the "hardest bosses ever", even if that reputation isn't entirely deserved.

He still overplayed Sans's awareness. Sans only connected the dots from the déjà vu. He only knows that someone can save and reload, not that he's in a game.

After all, without Chara, the pacifist ending would be impossible (where do you think those memories from Asriel's and Chara's come from? Frisk wasn't there). There is also the fact that they wouldn't have killed them selfs with the flowers if they didn't care about their family (instead of killing them), but I don't want to go on a long monologue with more.

That's not exactly true. You have it right. His brothers did fight in the war, but his brothers were never *confirmed* dead. They're just listed as MIA and are presumed dead. Letting there be potential for one if not all of them to be alive. Another sad thing is that Mirage's dad is also a deadbeat, yet he still misses him. Also, apparently, Mirage has an uncle who's a pilot. Which has always been an interesting tidbit to me.

People understand it as overwhelm powering and manipulation honestly. The attack is on multiple fronts. He uses his udnerstanding of the 'gameyness' of his reality to screw with you, even going far as to attack you in your action menu. He screws with you mentally, putting your down, revealing information, mocking your, teasing you, compeltely fucking with you. But it doesn't change, he is also overwhelmingly powerful. A weird way to think it, maybe he put all his stats from his Health into everything else. Becoming a overwhelming glass cannon. We gotta remember that this isn't the first time sans was tormenting and overpowered an immortal. Flowey is likely more powerful than most monsters in the underground. He was manipulating time as well. but he also fears sans deeply, more than he fears anything else.

That’s also the reason I prefer deltarune Toby fox make sure his new game are actually funny for shets and giggles not the internet edgy boy stuff. For them we are beyond comprehension even chara takes control we can just uninstall and reinstall wipe everything clean. Sans “know” he is insignificant, he could never win. We are like Eldritch horrors that the only way to win is to not be notice by us.

The sans fight is hard and he seems strong because he was pushed to his very limit after you killed EVERYONE he loved and cared for. If you put another character (except papyrus he would never even think of killing you) in that situation they would probably be way stronger than sans because of the situation they were put in. In canon sans is just lazy, lazy, lazy, lazy, funny, etc... but a lot people in fanon represent him as one of the most powerful characters. Also flowey does not *FEAR* sans. He *HATES* sans because of his personality and his funny ways to annoy him. He has probably killed him in one of his MANY resets for fun but still hates him due to the fact that he's really good at being annoying (like me!). Sorry for mucho texto but i had to say this.

It is also one that confused me a lot. Because it is so incredibly well-known, mostly cuz of sans. But it's also not used as much as other tropes in media. Underrated? Overrated? Or something else? And I mean as in side-characters. Not main characters. With main-characters it's pretty obvious.

I honestly picked Mirage at first simply because "hey, I recognize him as Kyle Crane" ...He's now my favorite character in the Apex lore simply because of how relateable his demenor is.

People hate mirage bcs they relate to him to much Mirage are great in game also

his very power is that he's judge, jury, & executioner and is terrifyingly good at fulfilling that role. he isn't strong but if he's punishing someone he is great at pissing them of & frustrating them till they give up or beat him after hour's of time wasted to practicing his fight. now that i think about it he isn't punishing frisk he's punishing the player and stopping them from getting the ending and getting rewarded for there curiosity for choosing to go out of there way to kill all character's for no reason except why not or to see what would happen, it can't be for just exp as once at a good level the player just could stop and you're actively going out of you're way to kill them all so the player is actively choosing the bad route. killing sans is the only satisfaction for going down the bad route (and it isn't much of a satisfactory death anyway's as he just disappears after moving of screen) as the ending doesn't seem to me (a person who has never played undertale) to be a satisfying end to the game, you just ether die and the world end's or the world just end's with you're involvement.

Agree that Sans and most characters really are portrait very badly by the fandome, but i want to make a small correction, if you try a run were you just kill Papyrus Sans will not go as if nothing had happen, he actually desapears c¿almost completly from the game until he judges you, not talking or even letting you see him whit the one exception of the syren battle were if you turn it into a concert, the text says "A hooded figure watches the commotion from afar". instread of Sans selling tickets to everyone as he would normally do.

Also I always felt WE are the ones who possessed and basically the game is , do you give control back to Frisk or give it to Chara? Theres a popular fan theory that Chara is the narrator, but I always hated that theory. It made no sense since Chara's text is always red when theyre in control. I prefer the theory that Frisk is the narrator and that is why they try to guilt you into being better person so they get the ending they want. Especially since Frisk is never Frisk, they never have a name, UNTIL you do a True Pacifist run.

Im not good at explaining it but I think that chara is just kinda chilling at the start. Its the players choice to do genocide or pacifist and if we show mercy and dont corrupt her then yeah. And during genocide we show Chara that murder is GOOD that it’s JUSTIFIED and she thinks such. So if we deny her offer at the end then she takes control cause thats what she was CONDITIONED to do About frisk: I dont think Frisk is really Frisk. They are simply a blank slate for us. We CHOOSE their own actions. Frisk isn’t responsible for anything we do. Thats why Flowey tells us to let them be happy cause after the pacifist route they are somewhat free from our control. Again this is all MY personal opinion so your own ideas may actually be canon but this is just what I think.

This was literally the reason Avi kept pushing for him. Avi has always been super nostalgic for 90s Spider-Man (hence why he pushed for Venom in SM3) and if you watch The Spot's episode there, you realize that despite being a joke character, neither Spider-Man nor Kingpin really have any real means of fighting him. The writers actually had to give him a love interest Kingpin could hold at gunpoint because he was too OP. His origin comic run had a similar problem when they realized the sheer effort it took for Spidey to land even a single punch against him, so they just wrote him to give up after getting hurt even once.

I knew about him since I was little, because I had this Spider-Man picture book that was essentially a compilation of early Spider-Man stories rewritten for little kids. First some reason the Spot's origin was one of them.

@@soupkimi Even theory about sans surviving at genocide makes more sense than Sans counting deaths by reading expressions. His lines at genocide fight tell us about his awareness. Yes, maybe he doesn't remember them as he repeats same lines with some exceptions (first encounter when he surprises that you greeted him too fast), but still seems to care about them (genocide fight lines, again).

the whoopee cushion scene is so good because it kinda feels like toby planned that u as the player would eventually try the genocide route, regret it, reset, and come right back to this moment with newfound genuine fear of him now that you’ve seen the extent of his hidden strength. absolutely brilliant

Wrong. It's pretty debateable because you can easily interpret either way. We don't know which one is for certain because the undertale is pretty vague. Who says don't remember resets or loads is just as fanon as the other.

@@sonicthehedgehog1606 that's dumb. It's quite easy to understand, and not at all vague. Multiple characters throughout Undertale react like they've seen you before, or they think they might have, or have a feeling like they have after a basic reset. Toriel is a prime example when asking for your favorite flavor of pie. Flowey is the only one who truly remembers Loads and Resets (chara aswell), as he litteraly directly comments on them to you and even manipulates the files themselves at the end of the Neutral route. However, other characters like Alphys, Sans and even possibly Asgore can have at least knowledge of the existence of Loads and Resets. (Asgore acknowledges the fact he's "killed" you before if you talk to him, and Sans explains the timeline observations in his boss battle. With Alphys having notes and studies of DETERMINATION). in the case of Sans, he does not possess the memory qualities like Flowey does. He shares the same deja vu type experiences as most other characters in the game. In the boss battle, he reads your expression to see how many times you've supposedly died, but he always repeats his dialogue in the boss, which proves he has no memory of the encounter (Flowey, in his Asriel boss, the only one who does remember besides Chara, does not repeat dialogue after you're defeated, because he knows hes explained it to you already. And in other neutral routes, he repeats himself for the sake of simplicity, for the games sake. But he still comments on it). Sans reads your face, he doesnt remember. Flowey is also the only character to do something completely different in a second playthrough depending on what you do prior, such as straight up not appearing in the beginning if you kill him in the prior Neutral route, because he directly remembers, unlike the rest. not that hard to figure out if you dive into the lore and piece things together.

Or better question, why does he question how you knew to turn out to shake his hand before he says to? Because you'll probably never read, The wandering Inn (highly reccomend) has a character that fits into this archetype. Saliss. I'm kinda bad at explaining things, so bear within me. The setting is a high fantasy story with gnoll (wolf-dudes) and drakes (dragon's cousin, lizard dudes), obviously humans too, and on one side of this central conflict is a city and within one of the cities, is a complete goofball, named Saliss. In fact, this character is so off the wall, that the first time we see him in-story, he out-weirds the from-earth human protagonist where one of her biggest character trait is being odd. He's a nudist which is why he got arrested, and adventurer/alchemist so powerful, that he's named throughout the world (named adventurers being the highest class of adventurers), which is seemingly the reason he gets passes for his behavior. Throughout the entire story, you get the feeling that he's got his own shit going on, and he absolutely does, and not just being a pawn for his side of all of these conflicts. One great thing about the wandering inn is how it peels different characters apart layer by layer, and here that process is beautifully done. It's not so subtlely revealed that he can use his potions to turn into different forms. He has relations to lighter aspects of the criminal underbelly through speakeasies, or atleast, his "cousin does". He has relations to the highest authority in Pallass (the city this is all taking place in), and even though he gets bailed out and bails out the general, they always speak to eachother in sorrowful, regretful, and sometimes vile words, tons of context and history unknown to us. As it turns out, the guy who litterally wore nothing, with seemingly nothing to hide, nothing up his non-existent sleeves, was really a sleeve onto his own. If there's one thing that works with a funny character, depending on how you write and your work's length, giving them some of the most depth, can give them a role just as valuable as their comedy to hold on to, so that they can be more and function in the story more than that humble mask, making readers appreciate both sides more. I would say “comic relief who has the best character growth” is its own, arguably even cooler, trope. Inosuke from Demon Slayer is another good example of it I think. When you look past the constant “haha funny boar man” part of his character, he goes from a careless egotistical jerk to a good friend and leader.

He's one character thats a part of my favorite character trope, "guy that feels inferior to his super powered friends but overcomes it by working hard and being brave" along with characters like usopp from one piece

@@No.1RatedSalesman She does claim to have hid it from everyone, however in the game there are a few hints that Sans knew.(even though there are only 3, i think they are very solid) First, if you call Papyrus before entering Alphys lab from the first time, the conversation he has whit frisk somehow(i don´t remember the details) ends whit Papyrus aking if it means that there are dogs inside of the lab to wich Sans says: "I mean, i wouldn´t rule it out"(i want to say he said that while whinking, but that may just be my memory lying to me). Second, while on alphys lab if you call papyrus in front of the bag of dog food alphys has to feed the amalgamates(or at least the dog amagamate) Papyrus coments that he is sure he had seen that same bag on Sans room a few days ago. Finally, in Sans and Papyrus kitchen, on Sans side of their fridge, there is a singular half eaten bag of potato chips, there is only one place on the entire game were it is posible to get a bag of potato chips and that is the vending machine located inside the true lab.
