This video shows how to take apart and service a Silstar saltwater reel that was made in Korea. This reel was part of parts reel lot that I purchased. I initially wanted to find out why it failed and I was able to restore it in the process.

My impression of Silstar is not a good one but I love your tuition adventures. You’ve encouraged a few of those adventures that I’ve done. . Wasn’t Silstar once made in Europe and highly thought of at least by some? I honestly don’t know much about them except for servicing one for a friend. It really must have been dirty if you used 3 or 4 paper towels. Never seen you use that many! LOL. Hope that didn’t break the bank! That Silstar I serviced had paint falling off all over the place. Maybe that is a characteristic of the breed. This was great to see. Sorry about the broken screw but you’ve resurrected another reel. Congratulations. --- Chris

You can't get much information on that company. I believe they were a consortium of European sporting goods distributors that were looking to build a brand, and that they contracted the production of their "trade" reels. I'd like to know more about them - Dennis

Silstar made some good reels but the brand could not compete against more established companies. So they marketed mostly low priced reels to target a particular market. They did make some decent baitcasters and an early japanese built baitrunner that was of fairly good quality.

Solid reel, can take 0.6mm line. That thing had grease everywhere but where it should be.

@@2ndChanceTackle I was watching your vido while restoring an old EX 2140, paint is dry this morning, except I forgot to complete the front bit the spool rides on so that is only in primer. Got the fiddely bits like the drag train reinstalled. so it is almost done. THe one you have there seems to be the older mechanism. They pretty much stuck to the newer design on all models from there on. If you fixed one, you can fix any.
