Ok so a guy on a 130+ decibel Harley can haul ass through the middle of a neighborhood/city and he doesn't get a ticket or have to comply with any decibel level. Oh but yet you guys out in the dunes in the middle of no fucking where can get tickets for being too loud. The sound level law is fucking stupid!!

Very thankful for these guys. Now I can get some good sleep in the middle of the day in my sand house and not have to worry about the sand catching on fire

Decibel measurements are taken at 40 inches (3ft 4 inches) away from the source. NOT next to the exhaust!!! That officer was not instructed on how to measure it properly.

I'm a deputy sheriff who owns several straight piped vehicles and unless you are ripping through a residential neighborhood at 2AM I could care less.

he was holding the decibel meter right up against the pipe of course its going to be loud here in my state they got to be tested over 75 feet away heck you hold the mic at your mouth you talk louder than 94 decibels

Two things: First off, these forest service dudes were super respectful and cool.. props to them. they're doing their job, they had a lot of good, straight to the point facts to back up their info. Second: The law (at least in Oregon, where im from) states that it can be a max of 89 dB when tested 25 feet away from the pipe. The nerdy forest service assistant was holding the tester right against the damn pipe like he wanted to be up inside it. This isn't your prom date, you need to test a certain distance away. im sure other states have different distances. be informed! these guys know they're loud AF, they should know they run the risk of getting stopped and tested. but most importantly they should have been informed and told the ranger to back up to the required testing distance.

My grandpa, uncle and I received tickets for not having spark arrestors on our quads while at a SAND drag strip in the dunes. Like honestly, will the sand EVER catch fire?!?! Not only that, but as they were citing us, there were multiple other OHV's such as sand rails driving by with straight pipes!!! It was so bs. Ruined our trip.

Spark arrestors...my story...two years ago I had my grand kids in the tub buggy and we were going through the Silver Lake Sand Dunes entry gate and one of the DNR girls started fussing with the helmet my grand kid was wearing, it was just enough delay that one of the DNR officers stepped out of the shack and told me there were no spark arrestors on my exhaust and we couldn't go in, grandkids on que go "WHAAAA! We want to go on the dunes!" So across the street I go to B and L Sports, buy a new exhaust system and spark arrestor and 30 minutes later we are back on the dunes with a little more power! Moral to the story, Spend the money now and save yourself a half hour!

Permanent hearing loss begins to occur at ~85 dB. The reading shouldn't have been taken from the tip of the exhaust, but it was still way too loud. 114dB will affect your hearing big time...

My fmf on my cr85 has a forest service approved spark arrestor stamp on the inside, like in between the mounting braket and muffler, almost not visible without taking the bike apart. Even my 1970 honda ct90, which almost certainly no longer has a functional spark arrestor(like it ever needed one) has the forest approved spark arrestor stamp on her.

My under standing is when the take a Db reading there is a specific distance they are to be away from the end of the pipes, something like 12 feet. Otherwise doing it like they did nothing would ever pass.

The same thing happened to me. I have a V8 Jeep Grand Cherokee and the guy put it in a freaking rust hole in the exhaust. Whatever though there was an older guy who knows what he is doing and corrected the other guy. We were under 93 decibels

what's the decible limit there? I think I heard 94 db, but don't most stock MX bikes and quads reach upwards of 100+? I couldn't find any stats for my 06' 250 so I'm going out on a whim here. but that's nuts they won't let you ride the dunes with that beast, noise and sparks are of little worry out in sand.

For a off-road vehicle to be ridden on state lands it has to have a US Forest Service approved spark arrestor. I've bought a number of old Enduro bikes and quads and every single one has a spark arrestor that says "Approved for use on trails by the US Forest Service". Problem is a spark arrestor purchased from a performance shop is not tested for off-road use nor is approved for use by the Forest Service. All stock spark arrestors however do have that stamping as required by law.

I've seen bikes catch Woods on fire without Spark arrestors,you should always use one in less MX track only.now them being stamped ? I run pro circuit spark arrestors are removable and I have never seen one with a stamp.

The reason we have nice things and nice places here in the good ol' usa is because of all the rules we have...that being said there are some laws that get enforced in one situation but not in others. Like others noted there was probably a harley that blew through after the camera shut off that didn't have a chance of passing either but no one seems to bother them as the hop from tavern to tavern.
