I don't mind that Twilight was reduced to 1 note, as it's there to emphasize how the map SHOULDN'T have sent her. Plus, all the comedy was Perfectly timed. This may be my favorite episode in the Series.
Daybreaker's design looks amazing. =3 I was squealing the whole way through this episode. Celestia and Luna Episode... Check. ^w^ More personality and relationship between the two royal sisters... Double Check.
Celestia so needed this episode although since it's Starlight who swaps the cutie marks, is this episode hers or is it one for the Royal Sisters? Oh and as comment 400, let me say that Starlight has to explain how these spells work. Swapping cutie marks is a big deal
Best episode of the season so far by a long shot. We've been waiting for years to see the sisters really interacting with each other for more than a few moments while the main story rushes off somewhere else.
I was actually satisfied with the bits of S3E01 & S5E09 (the two talking together about things unrelated to themselves). There were other instances with both doing something "not mundane" together on the foreground while saying nothing [S3E02 has two!].
Did you notice Luna's Cutie Mark? The blotch around the moon is a part of it. This may sound strange, but remember the Season 4 finale? When the Princesses gave Twilight their power, and Cutie marks, Luna STILL has the blotch... Something tells me that Luna may still have some Nightmare moon in her... Or I'm just overanalyzing some detail.
That's a great catch and a huge plothole. Apart from "creators messed up" the most logical thing coming are cutie marks having layers. But that doesn't make any sense at all.
Being separate canons that are basically AU's to eachother, it is still nice to get small nods like this... As that the Comics are more free to explore alternative lines of events from the show, the show in turn is given between the Comics and Popularized Fandom some rich resources to draw from. ;3
They're doing a VERY good job with Season 7 so far. As a personal touch on your review, I did feel like you skated over Luna's part in favor of Celestia-vulnerability talk. I know that Luna has been given episodes to her on this, and it was great to see her get that. BUT if I was a person who had never seen the show, but wanted to get a few quick character-scoops before going in, I would have assumed that the 'blue pony' either didn't matter as much or didn't DO as much as this 'sun pony'. And I'd go into the show already (and mistakenly) biased. And Luna deserves so much more than that. Honestly, your reviews are majority on the A+ side - and I can't even begin to imagine how much time even a quick vid like this must take to make all up.You do an amazing job - you and the Fiery Joker are my two fave reviewers here! I'm still geeking out over this episode to have a truly unbiased opinion yet, but I LOVED the points you brought up, Silver! I felt Starlight actually took a more natural role in this, her strengths as a character fitting well with the problem at hoof. The episode was written so well that I actually forgot it was Starlight handling the problem and was able to focus more on the story of the Two Sisters.

Don't forget about the brief foreshadowing of an upcoming episode in one of the dream bubbles. It's at 2:01 that we see a dream bubble showing a baby Applejack be held by not just one, but TWO ponies, giving us a glimpse of her parents.
Er Mer Gersh!!!! A new SilverQuill video!!! Whoop!!! Anyways, fanboying aside... I can't really see what I can add onto this. I think you might have hit the nail on the head as far as first impressions go. I absolutely adored this episode with all of me heart and iI can honestly say it's my second favorite episode of the season thus far. Keep it up, Season 7, you're doing really good.
Excellent review! This was my favorite episode of several seasons, and I've been really interested to hear what other people think. Glad you liked it as much as me! I've honestly been enjoying episodes that use Starlight the most recently; the other six have been expanded on so much that they don't seem to have many issues left to work through that really interest me, but I appreciate Starlight because she's coming from such a fallen place to start with and yet is genuinely trying. I think it's a similar reason to liking Luna: our first impression of them is rock-bottom, and we get to see Starlight working her way up from there, but not in too perfect a manner (as you say, she often regrets her bluntness and doubts herself). Maybe it's simply because the others have already done their progress and Starlight is just starting, but I find her presence and usage within the show both relatable and refreshing.
This episode was way better than i could have predicted just from the title. Proof time and time again that Starlight kind of became the overlord of amazing episodes and i love more and more where this is going. And LOL. Day breaker? :)) Gosh that character was amazing. And for a second i thought she actually stole my gaming nickname( RuleBreaker)
Just saw this video in my recommended (was on vacation at the time it was posted) and LOVE the S Quilted version of you (just too cute) I was also happy to see this episode finally come out...when I tried writing Hasbro with a few ideas like Sunset's return and Tiberius (Luna's pet) making an appearance I mentioned it would be nice to have an episode around Tia and Luna...they've been skirting their relationship all these seasons and never really showed what happened between them after NM was turned back into Luna....showing these feelings between them really addresses that and shows growth and development for them both I too hope the map with start calling more in the loop...especially now that Trixie and Discord have become more involved not to mention Thorax
I think it was an awesome decision to send Starlight instead of one of the mane 6, I really admired that. At first glance most fans probably thought it was a rehash of everything she does, but no it became its own very memorable episode with a great story. Anyways back to Starlight. Yes, I agree with Silver in saying she has less bias and fear for upsetting the princesses and isn't afraid to be direct with them on the true problem. It made the friendship problem easier for her to solve unlike if it were Twilight or pinkie. Maybe Apple Jack would've been the second best choice for her honesty, but her bias still stands. Starlight has no prior relationship with Celestia and Luna other than the few moments they had together in one or two episodes so she had no worries of them feeling dissapointed with her.
But Twilight was hilarious in this! I do believe this is how she would react, and just because we just see glimpses of her in this episode it doesn't make her one-note in my opinion. We know her better than that, and here she was a lot more fun than usually! Also, adore the sisters in this! Heartfelt, funny and adorable ^^
I've found my enjoyment and interest in the show has been waning the past few years but I really enjoyed the hell out of this episode. Had me chuckling at quite a few parts.
On the possibility of the map calling ponies other than the mane six and Starlight on a mission, I fully support that idea. I've even held an idea since Crusaders of the Lost Mark that the CMC would get called on a mission at some point, maybe to help with a friendship that also deals with a young pony's cutiemark.
So glad to see your opinion on this oh so fun episode. I truly enjoyed it from start to finish, I felt very amused with many of expresions by twilight's part and it was very enjoyable how starlight interacted with that. While I'm a big Princess Luna fan, and I see few traits of her reflected on myself. I could still understand the importance of both princess roles. I loved seeing the mlp staff create a villian persona for Celestia and battle off with Nightmare Moon it truly was wondeful visuals. Overall loved the episode in this season 😊 and will be excited to hear more of your thought on many other mlp episode!
I LOVED THIS EPISODE! It was the first episode where Celestia and Luna played a huge role! I really enjoyed this episode because it gave a lot more character development for these (at least to me) "Mary Sue" characters. They seemed perfect in every way. They weren't very realistic. Before this episode the only realistic moment between them was in the slice of life episode where they fought about gifts. They actually feel like realistic (Sry for using that word too much) siblings! and OH MY GOD Daybreaker! SHE LOOKS AWESOME! It would be so cool if the writers made her the season finale villain. Maybe she still lives in Starlight's mind not truly gone. (But that sounds like a fanfic to me tbh) Anyway this episode is now my new favorite out of the ENTIRE SHOW!
Ricky Williams And so far we got two episodes where we got to see Celestia's more personal life. The first one was Season 7 Episode 1 where it showed how worried she was for Twilight when she came to the conclusion she needed to send her away along with a few other stuff and now we got Episode 10 which showed much more and about Luna's life too. :3
If you look at Celestia's dream sequence, you can see baby Applejack being cuddled by her parents! Her father has a yellow coat and her mother has a light peach coat! I'm so excited to see them!
You know ,I've a game drinking game to you silver quill. Everytime i shout " damn you silver quill! " which happens everytime you and i have a similar thought on a episode or you get me to think and feel, i take a drink. Accent is optional when shouting and substitutes are " confound you silver quill! ", " screw you silver quill! " and the ever present " what the fuck silver quill?" or even the occasional facepalm applies.
I wanna punch whoever wrote the description for A Royal Problem, they gave me intense anxiety for TWO weeks for nothing. Cuz' this episode was GOOD! You guys have no idea how flippin' happy I am right now! THEY DIDN'T FIGHT AT ALL! It was just a little spat that Twilight and Starlight blew out of proportion! Some people will probably hate Starlight because of that, but I love her for it! This was so much better than Friends Forever #38! I love that Star and Twi were the ones blowing things out of proportion. Maybe they're the ones who wrote that inaccurate episode description? I think Celestia and Luna eventually would have decided to switch jobs on their own. I'm sure they could do that spell too. Starlight just sped up the process.
i adored this episode not only is it a celestia or luna story but more a royal sister/starlight episode and i love the walk a mile concept show here showing even though celestia raised the moon for a thousend years she knows nothing of dreams looking forward to more coming of this and also give derpy a map episode
I think the map can only call the mane six and starlight because she has some sort of odd connection to the map, think about it she was the first pony they met via the map and she used the map to initiate time travel, also the only place they went to via the map that actually matter(IE had world impacting consequences/to stop something evil) was Starlight village.
I like the idea of the Cutie Map sending other ponies on missions, but I think there's also a strong chance that this is leading to what many of us have been expecting for a while...that Starlight will become a full member of the new Mane 7, just as Sunset is now a full member of the HuMane 7. Now Starlight just needs a chair at the table and her own scene in the intro. Since the very first thing that the Map ever did was send the 6 of them to Starlight, I think it would make sense for the Map to still be guiding her to join them. But, for now, I like how she is still not entirely there, hence the Map sent her on the only solo mission so far.
I bet the next pony to be called on a friendship mission is Trixie. Why? Because she hangs out with Starlight, often "in the castle" where the map is. I believe the map is sentient, because it's part of the tree of harmony. It got to know the mane six for many years. It trusts them. Now it trusts Starlight enough to give her a mission. In time same for Trixie.
I must admit the episode is a lot better than expected, I just never expected it would be that good that they would have Celestia evil darker would be in this episode even though it was a nightmare. I'm kind of iffy about the name Daybreaker. I mean I'm sure the fans came up with a much more frightening names for Her. But it was rather awesome.
So glad I got to meet you at Everfree NW, Mr. Quill. Remember the challenge I gave to you at Everfree NW! Also, this episode made me realize (Ton of others can agree with me on this) that Celestia could go full-blown Pinkamena on the ponies if she weren't to hold it back. Just sayin'.
Good thing the castle only requires 7 thrones, 6 mares and one dragon to make a new one for free! (it seems they never told Starlight how it grew by itself, since otherwise she would not be that afraid in S7E02)

I was more surprised by the name of "Day Breaker". When I saw the episode, I was kinda hoping the name would be "Midnight Sun" just because of Celestia having Luna's Cutie Mark at the time and it sounded awesome.
Looking forward to all the cool art that's going to be made of Daybreak and her battle with Nightmare Moon. Also that Twilight talking music box is going to pop up in some way at the next big convention, I would bet a lot of Bits on that. Also may become a meme.
I want Starlight, Maud and Trixie to get called into action. They have to solve a problem involving two ranchers who can't decide how to build a fence for their livestock, and it's ruining their friendship. Starlight decide it should be a square, because it gives the most area for the least perimeter. Trixie wants a circle fence because it looks better. Maud builds a small fence around herself, and said "I declare myself to be outside".
I want to see Derpy on a friendship mission. I want her to succeed in a manner where you can't tell if her clumsiness led to dumb luck or if there was more to her, like in Irresponsible Captain Tylor. ^^
Loved the episode!! Twilight was the only weak part. Keep in mind though that "Day Breaker" is actually a Starlight Glimmer invention. The character comes from HER mind as to what Celestia might become rather than from Celestia herself. There might be some truth to it but it didn't seem like Celestia was fighting with herself too much and more at a loss to help Starlight. Also keep in mind if this gives you a little hope, Silver. The map called her... but I don't think she has a thrown. As such it might be possible for ANYONE to be summoned by the map. It's certainly not as much of a stretch of the imagination as it once might have been.
Oh my GOD! I just noticed in baby applejacks dream bubble... SHE'S IN SOMEPONIES ARMS!!! Either mom or dad, but who ever it is has big hooves and is holding her close!!! Now I can't wait to meet her parents!
Admittedly, I did kinda feel a bit smug about how Daybreaker came about. I knew what Celestia's weakness was just from imagining her character a little further due to the comics: Her Ego. Daybreaker is the complete opposite of what Nightmare Moon stands for. Luna became Nightmare Moon because she was being neglected, ignored, and felt like she wasn't getting the recognition and appreciation she deserves. Nightmare Moon took that fear and loneliness and twisted it into hatred and jealousy. On the other hand, Daybreaker would come about because Celestia is already getting exactly what she wants. She's popular, pretty, and powerful, and she has proven that she can rule Equestria all by herself for a thousand years. We have already seen proof that Celestia has a massive ego, simply because Nightmare Moon existed. She let her ego get the better of her, and it blinded her to her sister's plight until it was too late. I mean, just look at the first episode. Celestia didn't blame herself for Luna's fall, she blamed Luna. She never even /apologized/ to Luna when Nightmare Moon was defeated by Twilight and co. Her ego is so big that she hadn't even realized it was HER FAULT, and it was HER EGO that Luna fell to Nightmare Moon. Celestia is my favorite Princess, and even I can't deny those things. However... had Luna not fallen, I have a feeling that Daybreaker would have shown up instead. Without Nightmare Moon's appearance, had Luna not lashed out like she did, Celestia would have turned into Daybreaker because it shocked Celestia out of her limelight and made her realize her mistake. In fact, it's probably what first started her horrible case of self-doubt. Thankfully that self-doubt will prevent Daybreaker from ever existing... There's no way to tell if Luna would have been able to wield the Elements of Harmony by herself to defeat Daybreaker; she has nowhere near the magical experience that her older sister did. Celestia is like Twilight: she studied magic daily and bettered herself in it almost to the exclusion of all else. Luna... probably didn't.
"Ugh, so much black. We get it, you're sad!" I could not breathe after that line. That was one of my favourite parts! All jokes aside, this was such a good episode, and a very long time coming. Celestia gets to have an actual personality with interesting flaws. Who else was worried that would never happen?
MoonShadowWolfe Well in Slice of Life you did get to see the two sisters bickering over the present they forgot to bring to the donkeys' marriage. It probably did hint that someday we would see an episode based around them. And we finally did get to see it :D
Well I like black I love nightmare moon for her beautiful design aka the black coat blue eyes purple eyelashes and eyeshadow and blue pretty two toned hair I love everything about her and I kinda think daybreakers so ugly that I put out her mane and tail with a bucket of piss only it would take too long to get that much pee so I would probably use vinegar water oh and give her a pair of purple contacts cause bitch those eyes are tacky! Let me change her armor back to gold while ur at it give her a better sense of style like celestia!!!
Has anyone else noticed that in the Tirek saga, Luna kept the black splotch on her butt when she lost her cutie mark, but now, the black splotch transfers to Celestia's royal flank?
Day Breaker looked pretty bad ass. Now we've seen 3 alicorn princess in an evil form. Nightmare Moon, Midnight Sparkle, and now Daybreaker. I wanna see an evil version of Cadance next.
I took some of the things that Daybreaker said as an note that...Celestia's been holding back what she can do in fear of her being presented as too powerful.
Well from what I remember of DR. Wolf reading future episodes (potential spoilers) we have Discord dialing down his chaos pocket dimension, Spike mediating his leaders of different species friends, a return of the Yaks, Zecora getting sick, Twilight getting full family time and Rarity possibly going bald. Yeah this should be fun.
So the map called on Starlight to resolve a friendship problem. Now I wonder if the map could call on Trixie, Discord &/or Thorax..? Maybe the map recognizes their abilities since they were key players in resolving the season 6 finale..? I think that would make for a cool episode.
The Dream sphere's I feel are a blink and you'll miss it of nuggets of info, you get the funny, pinkie surfing on gummy and queen derpy (with Teilacane) and the heart warming/tragic of Applejack dreaming of her as a foal in her parents arms.
I was hoping you'd seen this one already, I couldn't wait to hear your take on it! I loved the daybreaker design and i'm kind of hoping we see a little more references to the better aspects of the comics seep into the show, its a shame that this episode kinda overwrites that particular comic and though luna's still grumpy when shes sleepy the part i miss most is comic luna's pet possum doesn't appear.
It just hit me that this episode basically de-confirms that there is a consistent naming scheme in regards to the corrupted ponies. Time to rewrite all the fanfics.
I just unloaded my thoughts on the equestria daily forums, but ill super summarize (i may have text dumped on my original post >.> ) -Loved Luna and Tia. Thinking another's job is easy only to fumble seemingly simple tasks is common trope, and not just in real life. Trying dropping into a new job day 1 and see how well you do. -Starlight handled herself well. She was actually fairly confident, if very nervous of the outcome, in her handling of the switch. -Twilight, you kept trying to fluster Starlight. Stop that! You stop that right now! -I would have been much happier with this as a two parter season premiere, mostly because i want more Day Breaker/Nightmare Moon. Maybe have had them escape the dream so both Luna AND Tia could fight them. -Fav episode of the season thus far.
I am going to say this now. I have a strong feeling we will be hearing from Josh, Voice, Toon, and Bliss have a lot to talk about on this episode when it comes in U.S time. Though I wonder what DRWolf thought of the episode. Also Silver, i find it funny that Toon is going to interview Celestia and yet our fav Hippogriff will not be there to troll her.
