just need a big pipe wrench to remove the old one. I used a 1 1/2" claw with a 1/2" torque wrench to reinstall. skinny zip ties work the best for the inner rubber boot. Moving the rack side to side made it much easier to work on the inner tie rod end.

2wd truck? Put a floor jack under the lower control arm, remove the from shock, take the upper ball joint loose, remove the outer tie rod from the spindle, slower lower the jack, spring will pop out, be careful, it's under a lot of tension.

If you need to torque the inner tie rod and don't have the special tool. Just put on the new jam nut and tighten the old jam nut to it then put on your socket with your torque wrench and tighten to torque specs.

Will a bad inner tie rod cause the wheel to feel like its loose even though it isnt?..I changed both tie rod ends..new ball joints..rotated tires..new u joints on main drive line...but my front driver side feels like its shaking only at speeds of 30 or higher..I dont feel it in the steering wheel..just below my feet when driving..it will sometimes stay there and also go away and come back..is it shocks? Inner tie rod? I believe hub is fine last time I checked about 3 weeks ago. Any help would be great..05 chevy silversdo 1500 crew cab is what I drive..also the driver side tire before being rotated started cupping on the outside..I'm thinking shocks until I seen this video. Thanks again
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 6 лет назад
With the truck in the air, can you move the wheel if you grab it at 12 and 6 and try to move it? What about at 3 and 9? Usually cupping is caused by a bad shock.
@dtrust68
@dtrust68 6 лет назад
MrSubaru1387 I do know last I checked it didnt move but if it did that would be a bad wheel bearing. I'm going to check again today to see if the control arm bushings are good and same with then torsion bar bushings. If you go to my page I posted 2 videos last night from my action camera (gopro wannabe)
@dtrust68
@dtrust68 6 лет назад
so i lifted the drivers side and its tight other than a little movement from upper ball joint...also found out my newly replaced tie rod end blew out on the upper side of the ball joint. so ill warranty that....lifted the passenger side and its very wobbly..like half inch movement at 12 and 6 and all around...ball joints look good though and same with the new tie rod end on that side. so i believe the passenger wheel hub which i replaced in oct 2014 is in need of a replacement again...to bad its warranty was a year only..surprised the driver side hub is still good..
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 6 лет назад
Yup. Movement when pulling from 12 and 6 is definitely a wheel bearing/hub assembly.

My clamp came off the side where the inner tie rod is and the boot is sliding with the outer tie rod my mechanic says he can't do anything until Saturday but it's just a dust shield nothing to worry about he said but is this true will it be ok to drive for 3 days I don't want to damage my rack and pinion
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 6 лет назад
As long as you aren't driving through rain or super dusty roads, you should be just fine. The rack has seals to prevent debris from getting in. The boot mainly keeps the inner tie rod joint clean.

Greetings and thanks for the video. But now, what do you mean "use a chisel to stake the tie rod to the rack" @ 4:29?? How could you assume a good number of us know what that means (and without including that part visually in the video)? It would be much appreciated if not too much trouble, you could explain that left out step. Thanks again for the other parts of the vid.
@patrickomann3580

You can ignore that. Just torque it down to the specs your truck requires I think mine was 90 ft lbs, been driving it a month now over 60 miles a day almost 2,000 miles, I had to Google what it meant to do that, and its unecessary

Need some help! I have a 2011 Silverado 1500. The inner tie rod is Completely stuck. It will not rotate off or anything. I've tried twice and given up on different days. Even with the channel locks it will not twist off. I kept the old inner on and replaced the outter. The inner is bad and needs to go. Help??
@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 6 лет назад
You've tried the inner tie rod tool? Sprayed with some penetrating fluid? Not really advised, due to harming steering rack seals, but heat may help.
@tommyjay504
@tommyjay504 6 лет назад
MrSubaru1387 I tried the inner tie rod tool. Mines different then the once shown in the video. I'm using the big OEM Green one. I might try the once used in the video since it's different but idk. It's so stuck on there is Slightly moving the racks when really pushed. I don't know what to do with it.

@MrSubaru1387
@MrSubaru1387 5 лет назад
There is an indentation in the tie rod, you hit the lock washer with the chisel to stake the washer into that indentation. It's an extra layer of protection. A mechanical lock to prevent the tie rod from unscrewing.
