Agreed with everyone about bolting vs welding. I will say after watching the build series, these are some of the best welds I've seen him lay down.

I love you guys!! It's my dream job to be an off road fabricator, I'm really good friends with the owner of Jimco Racing Mike Julson, he was going to hire me buy can't because Im not 18 yet, but he told me to come back right after I turn 18 so my dream job is waiting! As for now I watch all of these and admire your guys' skills!! Thanks for educating !! -Brandon

Well with that model Silverado the upper part of the stock bumper is acting as a valence it's mostly plastic, because of the step down from the headlights to the grill. In regards to the weight you really don't want a light prerunner so the shocks can work. One of our older projects is a Ranger and it was too light when we added the bypass shocks. Still glad to hear the video helped you and yes more to come.

Welding directly to the front crossmember is crazy. What are you going to do if you need to service anything of have to remove the front bumper? take the whole crossmember out?
@TheSPF
@TheSPF 8 лет назад
just weld another cross member under it probably
@robowens2628

Not to mention you could do all your welds in position on a bench.

Kristi6speed ya seems lazy to me. If you bolt it on it'll be much easier to fix or replace.

If the truck hits something just enough to bend the bumper it'll take that crossmember out real quick. ;-)

This build is going well. Like everything up to this point. Not at fan of the sheet metal supports or the valances on the bumper. I am more of a simple single tube across and bars for the skidplate kind of guy though. Keep up the great work.

Pretty soon you'll be able to have your own prerunner. Austin on the show started building his when he was 15.

Sir, you made it look so easy! I thought that overall, in front, the finished product would have shown much taller in its height. However, a great job, and video too.

I'm not a big fan of this style of bumper. but I love the workmanship, keep up the good work!
@dirtlifemagazine
@dirtlifemagazine 11 лет назад
Yes .120 wall and to notch the tube we use a tool called a Pipe Master to mark our notch then cut it out with our plasma cutter, then clean it up with a grinder.
@dirtlifemagazine
@dirtlifemagazine 11 лет назад
After we get the main structure of the bumper built we use the tape to determine the look we want. Then we make a template out of poster board and transfer it to the aluminum.

Damn nice bumper! Props for the upside down welding too. I would have bolted the bumper to the cross member and added a bar above the lights between the diagonal bars for more strength. Great looking build!

Ya I used to think the same thing coming from drag racing, but without enough weight it is hard for the shock to do its job. For power we have an Airaid intake, an exaust and a Superchips Flashpaq, not V8 power but definitely woke up our 4.0.

Just search for a plastics company in your area. We told them we needed it 5 inches tall and it came 8 feet wide. Was only around $30. You might also ask them what texture it comes in. Ours came textured on one side and smooth on the other. Use the textured side out otherwise it will get scratched up.

Hey sorry you didn't like that part of the build. It is hard to know what "everyone" likes, but glad you still like the show. When we get to the F150 bumper are going to be doing we are fabricating a more conventional style prerunner bumper but it too will have a twist on conventional.
@dirtlifemagazine
@dirtlifemagazine 11 лет назад
That would have worked if we made it a bolt on bumper. For our upcoming F150 prerunner build we will be fabricating a bolt on bumper.
@shb3395

Those are some big ol gaps on your notches! Also, why not make it bolt-on for when the tubes get bent hitting stuff? Not to mention ever servicing the damn thing. Your welds look nice though.
@dirtlifemagazine
@dirtlifemagazine 11 лет назад
Everyone has their own idea...why would you bolt on? Welding is much stronger. Today we just did a new bumper on this Silverado. If you go to Instagram you can see it at @vegasdezertfab

one question... why not build a bracket for the supports on the front cross-member instead of welding it on? if you ever have to take that bumper off your going to have to cut it off. Is there a specific reason for this?

Very nice looking job, nice welding skills, I wouldn't weld it to the chassis and cross member, what if you need to service it or replace it and the wiring is kind of weird, what about to run the wiring inside te tubes keeping them out of the view, everything was looking great until you put the valance, it makes the job looks low budget "cheap" and don't think it will do too much difference in aerodynamics. Good job, keep it up!!!!
