Originally created by John Rohmer, the Simi Seal Leech has been a popular leech pattern for many years. The fly earns its name from the main material used to construct it: Arizona Simi Seal Dubbing. The dubbing is made from a combination of mohair and synthetic fibers, which creates a coarse, medium-length blend with just a bit of flash.
Back in the day, Rohmer's original pattern consisted of only a hook, thread, and Simi Seal. That said, many variations of the Simi Seal Leech can be found on the market today. The variation we tie in this video includes a jig hook, a heavy tungsten bead, and a marabou tail (instead of the Simi Seal tail) for a little extra movement. While this pattern is not an exact match for the original, we've found plenty of trout that love this one just as much. This variation can be stripped like a streamer or dead drifted under an indicator.
In this video, Anglers All resident tying expert and Umpqua Signature Tyer Ben Baxter takes us through the process of tying the Simi Seal Leech from start to finish. To make the most of this tutorial, use the timestamps below the fly recipe for navigating to the part of the tying process you'd like to see!

That looks simple to tie and is a good looking fly--hey that rhyme. I’m definitely going to try this one.

And early on in tying, Ben, did not enjoy dubbing loops, well done....
