What are you talking about? Preveza was Albanian until 100 years ago. People in Preveza are mostly Albanians who speak Greek that’s why these are Tosk Albanian words. I bet the teacher’s grandfather spoke Albanian but now they identify as Greek. Also, Arber-esh music and literature is full of lament and songs about Arberia (Albania proper which obviously included Preveza, Arta, Parga, Crete, Thessalonik etc.) The song “O e bukura More-a” is about the Arberesh leaving their homeland of Pelonnesus in Arberia.

@Primo Sure. The first part Ηελ-Σελ-ΕΛ means bright. The second part -Λας means stone. So "Ηελλάς" is the country of the bright stones. Hέλλην is the human of this country, Ηελληνες is the plural of Ηέλλην. These "stones" are how humans were made by Deucalion and Pyrrha. It's a well know myth, try google it. But linguistically it's a two part word, like i explained above.

Arberesh live in Italy, nothing to do with Greece anymore. If you're talking about Arvanites, they weren't a minority but an integral part of the country. Would any country have a Prime Minister from minority populations? I highly doubt it, but there were Prime Ministers in Greece of Arvanite origins, like Georgios Kountouriotis for example. Why should we recognise someone as a minority and marginalise them just because you say so, even though said people feel more Greek than Greeks? There was never a Macedonian minority. There were Greeks, Bulgarians, Jews and Turks in Macedonia. Now why those Bulgarians started calling themselves Macedonians is another story. And yes I'm both Greek and Macedonian cause I come from Macedonia region and I'm Greek. As a Greek from Thessaly is both Greek and Thessalian, from Thrace both Greek and Thracian etc. There is a muslim minority in Greece and it is called a "muslim" minority and not "Turkish" because those muslims are Pomaks, Turks and Roma. Should we call Pomaks Turks? Would you like to be called a Turk just because you're muslim? You say that "we deny people and languages" when you do that exact thing. I've heard from many Albanians that there are not Greeks in Albania and that the Greeks living there are just deluded Albanians who deny their identity. And because I'm sure you've never met an Arvanite in your life, I'll give you inside information from my cousin who has distant Arvanite roots from her father's side. Arvanites have been here for centuries, all they knew as their country, their home was Greece. Her grandfather didn't even know how his ancestors came here, he only knew that his family spoke a different language at home. They never told him why and how, I doubt they even knew themselves. He first learned about where Arvanites come from from a book. When you ask him what ethnicity he is, he'll immediately answer Greek. The first time he met an Albanian in his life was in the '90s. He was curious at first but he said he didn't feel any kinship and connection and he thought they were different. I don't know how similar Arvanite and Albanian is but he said they couldn't understand each other when he was speaking in Arvanite and the other in Albanian. About your other statement that Greeks didn't even know what a Hellene was... well I think you've been misinformed. Hellene fell out of use with the rise of Christianity. It endede up meaning the pagan, the one who followed the old ways and the Christian Greeks didn't want to associate with it. That's why they favoured the name Romios. This doesn't mean that they didn't know their connection with ancient Greeks, they just didn't want to associate with the religion.

Arberesh = Αρβανίτης = Albanian. They are Albanian speaking populations that migrated first to Greece (Peloponnese or More as it was known about 600 years ago). It is unknown how long they stayed in Greece, but later some of them migrated to Southern Italy and Sicily (coincidentally in what was Magna Grecia). So their language is Albanian, but it is heavy influenced by Greek. From an Albanian standpoint, you can evaluate which layer of Greek influences affected them vs the current modern Albanian speakers. Example: Giatros and Dhaskal are known in Albanian as they are present in Modern Albanian too (considered archaic now) but parkales is a purely borrowing from their presence in Greece. Just FYI, 170 years ago, Albanians and Greeks were considered «ομογενείς» from both sides of the current modern borders.
