In this episode, we compare Serbian and Persian, exploring the similarities between the two languages. The commonalities between these two Indo-European languages may surprise many people. Serbian is the official language of Serbia, and one of the three official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and a minority language in Montenegro, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. There are many Persian words that have entered the Serbian vocabulary as a result of the Ottoman rule over the region which led to a linguistical contact between Turkish and South Slavic. During this period many Persian words which had entered the Turkish vocabulary would subsequently enter South Slavic languages. Serbian and Persian (Farsi) are both Indo-European language, Serbian is classified as a South Slavic language, while Persian is Indo-Iranian. Persian is primarily spoken in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan, as well as some other parts of the Middle East, Central and South Asia.

Root of the words: 5 or 6 out of 11 are Persian (45%-54%) 2 or 3 out of 11 are Arabic (18%-27%) 2 out of 11 are Turkish (18%) 1 out of 11 is Sanskrit (9%) Tent = "چادر"/"шатор" (root is Persian) Sugar = "شکر"/"шећер" (root is Sanskrit) Meatballs = "کوفته"/"ћуфта" (root is Persian) Button = "دکمه"/"дугме" (root is Turkish) Socks = "جوراب"/"Чарапе" (root is Persian, but some evidence show potentially from Arabic) Box = "صندوق"/"сандук" (root is Arabic) Clock = "ساعت"/"сат" (root is Arabic) Orange = "نارنجی"/"наранџаста" (root is Persian) Vinegar = "سرکه"/"сирће" (root is Persian) Mattress = "تشک"/"душек" (root is Turkish) Bag = "کیسه"/"кеса" (root is Persian) Contact us on Instagram for any questions or feedback: Shahrzad (@shahrzad.pe): instagram.com/shahrzad.pe Bahador (@BahadorAlast): instagram.com/BahadorAlast

çınar timur NO. Persian and Serbian (and other Slavic languages) are *SATEM* branches of the *INDO-EUROPEAN* language tree. This is something Turks would never understand because Turkish belongs to the Altaic language tree and not Indo-European. And secondly, most of these loanwords exist in other languages such as Greek, Urdu or Arabic. And for the last time, Ottomans never _"conquered"_ Persia nor were Persia part of the Ottoman empire. Gosh ignorance is rampant here 🤣
@tuzruneissik7168
@tuzruneissik7168 6 лет назад
First, Arabic is not a 'indo-european language'. Ottoman language was half Persian half Arabic a little Turkish. Turks and Persians lived together for centuries. Turks ruled Persia for 1000 years until 1930s. Most words in the video came to Balkans in Ottoman times.
@marmary5555
@marmary5555 6 лет назад
"First", nobody has said that *SEMITIC* Arabic is an Indo-European language. And lastly, "turks" didn't rule Persia; they were central Asians _turkic people_ (huge difference with Anatolian "turks", aka Ottomans)- And all of them SPOKE Persian, Persian was the official language of Persia, not Turkish. It never were, so stop being delusional.

jesus free Turks? No. Turkish is a east language related to Chinese and Korean. Serbia was once inhabited by Iranic nomads, some words maybe similar because of that and some are loan words. The name Serbia comes from Serbo, an old Iranian nomadic group
@Apawcalypse_Meow

as Russian, I only understood the word "box" as it is quite similar in Russian, pronounced as "sunduk" which is considered came to our language from Turkic languages. And the word for "time" is the same as used in Indonesian - "saat" which is a loanword from Arabic due to religious influences
@OfficialShadowKing
@OfficialShadowKing 6 лет назад
defragekb The only persian words I can think of which are genuinely close to Russian is 'sepas' (thank you), 'az' (from), 'zan' (women), 'zamin'(earth or ground), 'tu', (you, I think it's ТЫ in Russian?) And Khoda, (god in Persian) boga or bog is a famous word because the Slavic people got it from Iranians when they lived together in tribes near Ukraine. God was 'Khor' in ancient Iranian languages there are many more but I can't think of them right now. Other Iranian languages like Ossetians must have more genuine common words with Russian because ossetians once lived in eastern Europe.
@wudzah
@wudzah 6 лет назад
Most of these words came to us from the Turks, that is clear. Around 8,000 of words estimated in the Serbian language come from Turkish, Persian and Arabic. Preskir, kasika, kajmak, kacamak itd. Our links with Persia is however deeper. We descend from same branch of haplogroups IJK (Serbs being I2, Iranians being J). In genetic terms, they are closer to us than most Slavic peoples, who are haplogroup R1a. This is why there are so many people who look middle eastern in the balkans, because they came from middle east 20,000 years ago, unlike slavic groups who came from central asia. I speak Serbian fluently and I've started learning Farsi couple of months ago. As a Greek I thought that the only common words we had with Serbs were turkish words (usually) or words for scientific fields (chemistry, geography etc). But after I started learning Farsi, which I thought it would a totally different language, very hard to learn I've started, to my awe, bridging words between serbian and farsi. It made me really glad that other people realized those similarities! Great video for someone who knows/learns both languages!

Nowruz ( Serbian translation: Novorujanje, novoruž, novdan) in Iran is what Djurdjevdan is for Serbs. Both are traditionaly celebrated by making fire and running trough it, girls dressing up in leaves, flower arrangements, people go near rivers with family, sing. dance. It is not coincidence, our ancestors are related.
@mythrartartgroup8884
@mythrartartgroup8884 4 года назад
Serbian People Migrated from east of Iran and went to Europe. Roj = Ruz also in Kurdish Roj is Day and Rooz,. Fire was always dear to Aryan nations. running trough fire means purification. Persians has mythology character Syavosh/Siavash who went through the fire and emerged unharmed because he was innocent. Dancing around the fire, singing and telling old stories or poetry is a tradition in Iran. Same language, religion and culture, Basically we were the same.

South slavic language is older than any south slavic nation. Older than Croats, Serbs, Chernogorians and all of them but all of them has nationalised it as its own and gave language its own name. This is the same language and this saying that they have all same roots also older than any of them individuly. Serbian Slavic language have far most turkish words so this simularities between these two language bring us info that Turks and Persian are close and has lot of cultural contacts...

If you do a little research on Serbian language you can find a stunning similarity with Sanskrit. Then you find out that Serbian Cyrillic alphabet has more than 85% matching with the alphabet of Vinca ancient civilization. Then you come to a conclusion that migrations of the people didn't go east to west rather west (Balkans) to the east.

Rastko Simic Romanian language has also similarities with sanskrit language, because we are indoeuropeans. Romanian despite the fact is thracian +latin has many similarities with slavic languages . Ex : dă-mi (give me) / da mi (in slavic), da mi (italian), dame (spanish). 10= dece (latin), zece (romanian), deset (slavic).

Leon JR I will check that info but I really doubt that the migration went that way cause written and other physical artifacts in Serbia mainly (and Balkan countries that neighbor of what Serbia is today) outdate the artifacts in Persia and surrounding.
