I'm a Malayalam language speaker from India and I was shocked to learn the similarities between my language and Spanish. We call lemon/oranges "naranga" and in Spanish it's "naranja" and table is "mesha" which is "mesa" in Spanish.

Before 1800 Hindi and Urdu were considered the dialects of the same language. Both are derived from Hindustani. But Urdu is heavily influenced by persian/Arabic and adopted the Persian script as Persian was the official language from the time of Dehli sultanate, which also made it the lingua franca among the elite society. So technically, Urdu is the symbol of intermixing of Hindu and Muslim culture.

'Three' is 'teen' in Hindi Two more similarities I can think of now: 1. Husband is also called 'mard' in Hindi which I find similar to 'marido' in Spanish 2. The word 'but' is 'par' in Hindi and 'pero' in Spanish

@ishaandhawade8583 Год назад
'Par' is more Sanskritic Hindi derived from 'Parantu' so yes, that can be considered a similarity. However, mard is generally used for a man and that too, influenced by Middle Eastern languages. Marido indicates a male who is married in the literal sense; so that is a coincidence.

Hindi and Urdu are fully like each other, its very hard to tell the differences, both are derived from Sanskrit... The reason why both are written in Different scripts because of Political reason between Indian and Pakistan.. You can count them one only

The difference between Spanish and Portuguese is far greater than with Urdu and Hindi, despite the scripts being different (you can write both in whichever script btw; for example, Punjabi is written in 2 scripts - Gurmukhi and Shahmukhi), which are instead considered different registers of the same language: hindustani.

Sorry, but as a speaker of both Spanish and Portuguese I do not agree with you. Spanish and Portuguese are regarded by dialects of the same language by some schoolars. Both languages are mutually legible including literature which is not the case between Urdu and Hindi

@@LearnSpanishWorld Hola! Mutual legibility is not the same as intelligibility. I speak Hindi/Urdu and Punjabi, and my partner and his family are Spanish. While they may *look* different because of the script, hindi and urdu are two registers (not even as different as dialects) of the same language - this can be read on wiki as well: ‘Standard Urdu is often compared with Standard Hindi.[151] Both Urdu and Hindi, which are considered standard registers of the same language, Hindustani (or Hindi-Urdu), share a core vocabulary and grammar.[152][20][21][153]’ Spanish and Portuguese are indeed different languages, even if they use the same writing system; to argue that that alone is the basis for stating their higher level of mutual intelligibility is like saying English and Spanish are more mutually intelligible because they visually appear to be, than Hindi/Urdu, which is a false flag. Both hindu and urdu can and have been written in the sanskrit based Devanagari script and Nasta’liq, btw. The shifts in which script is mostly politics starting around the 1830’s; now, within Hindustani, there are numerous dialects, but the sound of words are the same. The core of the language is the exact same, colloquial speech is exactly the same, the grammer is the same, and words AND the way they are said is the same. This cannot be said for Portuguese and Spanish, despite their obvious relatedness (with certain languages of Spain like Galician being closer than Castilian - my partner’s family is from Galicia btw). I believe what you mean is that Spanish and Portuguese *were* dialects of the same language, which was Latin. Dialects, with enough time for increased divergence, population of speakers, and political standing, eventually emerge as languages. This is the natural progression of all languages. Portuguese and Spanish are much further along that progression than Urdu and Hindi; you have been deceived by their visual difference, but that’s judging a book by it’s cover.
