Thank you Keith for uploading this demonstration. More people should be demoing this model. Considering all the emphasis on sampling, modeling or otherwise emulating Roland beatboxes, I think there isn’t enough attention given to emulating the Simmons line. Back in August 2020, I uploaded a bunch of tracks to my channel, on some of which I used my ARP Odyssey reissue to generate individual drum sounds. I was aiming to loosely emulate the SDSV. More people should be trying to do things like that, and it wouldn’t hurt someone like Uli Behringer to try designing a dedicated emulation module.

Thanks, I have a SDSV as well, but most of the Drum modules are not working. I heard a German engineer has done front PCBs with the buttons for updating the difficult to get parts.

You don't know how much this means that you posted this... I've been wanting to convert mine since I got it!

I wish you success in converting your SDSV. It's a great unit!

Thanks Keith... you wouldn't mind telling me what exact transformer you purchased, would you? Also, to get that side panel off did ou have to pop rivets or were they simply screwed down? I can't remember. I do remember that the power supply/mixer PCB is hard-wired to the backplane.

The transformer was a Triad VPT36-690 www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/553-VPT36-690 Check the datasheet (it's on the Mouser page). It describes how to wire the primary for 230 VAC or 115 VAC, and the secondary for 36 VAC (center tap +/- 18 VAC) or 18 VAC. I don't recall having to pop any rivits to get the side panel off, but I think you'll have to remove the back first (and the module mounting on the front). However, there were some small design changes to the SDSV over its production run, and things could be a bit different with yours.

@@krmelectronics Thought I would update and tell you I did end up getting the recommended transformer last year and successfully converted my V to 110v. I'm working on a second one now, and you wouldn't happen to know what would cause the -15v rail to be -12v other than the 79 regulator, do you? It's been replaced, along with many other components, so I'm scratching my head...

It helps if I replace a 7915 with a 7915, not a 7912.... lol

Excellent. A quick query, should the top cover simply lift off, or are there any hidden bolts holding it in place on the right hand side (which is my present predicament)?

Hi DarkGlassly. Sorry, I don't have the Simmons SDSV in my studio anymore.

Hello - I am looking for a SDSV snare module.... since you do repairs, thought you might see one sooner than I would. Thanks

Hi, I was just wondering if you happen to know.. if like how would you be able to fill in those last two empty channels with say toms. Would I need 2 Tom voice cards? Or how could I modify an sds5 module on the last 2 channels to make them for instance Like I said Tom sounds.. so instead of 3 you would have 5 toms Thanks
@krmelectronics

Hi Calin. Each of the sound modules is slightly different, so you would need to find some tom modules to really re-create that sound.

Thanks good info, I wondered if I could hire you to rebuild one I am looking for along with the drum kit ? I seen a SDSV and SDS-7 but aint sure what the drums were. Buzz

Cool video. It does look like each module is identical and just has different labels for 'Tom', 'Snare' etc. Is there a difference between the circuits of those main modules or is it just different range adjustments for pitch and filter settings?
@krmelectronics
@krmelectronics 7 лет назад
Great question. I should have mentioned this in the video. The modules are all basically the same, but there are some slight differences: Noise: The Noise control on the bass and tom modules simply filters the noise output (low-pass filter). The Noise control on the snare filters the noise output, but it also introduces a pitch shift in the noise (due to a higher Q value in the filter). Tone: The bass module has the lowest tone range, the snare has a medium tone range, and all 3 toms have a high tone range. Tone Modulation: The snare module has a slight modulation to the tone. The bass and toms do as well, but it's much more subtle. Velocity: The pitch of the toms will go slightly higher as the velocity of the drum pad input increases.

i was goign to ask this exact question... do you know if there are some smaller simmons devices that offers similar sound generation? (like single channel)
