Oh I agree, his tenor epoch will always be my favorite, it is what made him legendary. I still enjoy his artistry as an elder statesman of the performing arts, and he has, miraculously, managed to transition to a baritone role stage career that has endured longer than even he anticipated. I also happen to enjoy his conducting, because he takes care of the singers, and they then aren't driven to sound shrieky, sharp, astringent or on the verge of crisis. Some who are used to hearing an orchestra driven like a race horse by a conductor keen on thrilling the audience with musical feats of heart pounding heights tend to mischaracterize his style as too slow, wrong, bad, blah blah blah. No, incorrect. He's serving a need that tends to be neglected by the status quo conducting world: the vocal instrument, the most delicate and fragile of all instruments. lol So your mom likes to see her son gobble up her cooking too? What does she cook that is your favorite? When my missus cooks Thanksgiving dinner, it is impossible to eat normal portions. Stuffing, or dressing, is basically food cocaine to me. lol Yes, the Met audience tended to be, and still tends to be, appreciative of its performers in general, but for Maestro they were and are extra enthusiastic. Except for the extortion attack over a year ago, to which they spinelessly caved without any fight, it has tended to treat him well. And at La Scala? He is very beloved, and thank goodness. The hecklers there are merciless. And the Viennese are very demanding as well, because in Vienna, the music capital of the world, opera is king, and he is the King of kings. My missus and I are retired and in hill country so we are barely impacted (mostly it's grocery store shortages that really remind us of the lockdown over-reaction nonsense in other states that end up affecting our state). But in states like CA and NY, the poor independent business owner is being punished terribly by their governors who ignore their suffering. They have to pay bills and buy food, they can't just stay closed. We have an immune system, trust it. Guard the elderly and sick but everyone else, get on with life, carefully, but back to normal speed. His passion and kindness... yeah, sometimes he makes my office very dusty, too. I like coming across your comments on uploads of him too. You and me (and a few others) against the liars and whiners, we'll keep them from taking over the comments with BS.
