Also, Simon saw One Direction as his income from the first few weeks of x-factor live shows. They generated so many fans so quickly and with all the popularity they had, I'm positive they had many record labels that wanted them. Simon wanted to sign them whether they won or not because he is a very smart business man. These boys didn't need Simon, they just needed a good record label and SYCO is certainly not the first, last, or most popular. Sony was just their easiest and closest resource. Look how quickly Zayn got signed to RCA. My point is, do not bite the hands that feed you, especially when you're taking the vast majority of their paycheck. Yes, Simon Cowell is a big name, but at least a bit more than quarter of the 500 million of his net worth came from One Direction. He is the richest he has ever been because of them and they worked their asses off from day one.
