El Condor Pasa has always been my second favorite Simon and Garfunkel song, ever since I was about 10-11 years old. The gypsy feel of this music, the music of people who wander the land and live with the earth, not forcing the earth to conform to an industrialized way of life has always appealed to me and others as well.

El Condor Pasa, “Flight of the Condor”, the original Peruvian composition was without lyrics. It so beautifully describes the majestic flight a Condor that it required no words. Yet, Paul’s lyrical addition, along with the beautiful harmonic voices of Simon & Garfunkel add a contemporary and contemplative layer that blends seamlessly with the original.

I grew up in Latin American countries as a young person. To my knowledge this is only an instrumental composition; there were no lyrics to it. Only the indigenous instruments. Listening to it lifts your spirit so you can soar free, like the wind and the birds. 🦅

I kid you not. I can spend my entire day just hearing you react to songs. Actually, I have. 😀 Your simplicity and how honest you are emotionally are a few of your wonderful attributes. You have enjoyed many of the Simon and Garfunkel music. El Candor Pasa was one of many that I recommended along with other listeners. If you want to hear a HAPPY SONG, you must close your eyes and listen to 'The 59th Bridge Song". Every time I hear this song, I go back to my childhood days when I would play stickball with all my friends from the block. It was like a United Nations Street. We were all friends whose parents were from different countries and different colors. We enjoyed the innocence of youth and fun. The beauty of friendship is wonderful, isn't it? This is probably the cutest song of Simon and Garfunkel. You will remember what I said. Stay happy.

You, my dear man are not broken. Becoming emotional while listening to music or a song is NOT a malfunction. I would say it is the intent of the artist to make you feel something with their music (an emotional language), and Simon and Garfunkel were true masters of their art. It shows you have an open and receptive heart. P.S. For something of theirs that's a little lighter, might I suggest the 59th Street Bridge Song

From the last Simon and Garfunkel album Bridge Over Troubled Water. That album saw the duo go out with a bang. Then Paul Simon went on to a brilliant solo career. My Spanish is not great but I imagine that somewhere in Peru there is a mountain pass (pasa) where the condors fly. If you go back to the very first Simon and Garfunkel album and listen to all the songs they ever released I don't think you'll find a bad one and I guarantee you find many more gems like this.

"Since then, it has been estimated that, around the world, more than 4,000 versions of the melody have been produced, along with 300 sets of lyrics. In 2004, Peru declared this song to be a part of their national cultural heritage.[1] This song is now considered the second national anthem of Peru. It is the best-known Peruvian tune in the English-speaking world,[citation needed] especially because of a 1970 cover by Simon & Garfunkel, with English lyrics by Paul Simon, on their Bridge over Troubled Water album. Their version is called "El Cóndor Pasa (If I Could)". wikipedia

"For me is the fact that the contrast - that the way they sing, you know, it's in such a delicate way - and then it crush you like a big rock falling from the mountains. In a good way. It's a good crushing. I want to say - have such an impact and it lays heavy but in a way that you know that's exactly what you need. You feel - you listen - you say Oh my God, yes." When I took beginning guitar lessons, the instructor handed out sheet music for El Condor Pasa for us to learn. The guitar chords are relatively simple, basic progression, but learning the timing/ rhythm was a challenge. For a real treat, I'd recommend a listen to The George Baker Selection perform "Una Paloma Blanca" from 1975. Though it has a similar vibe, It's more upbeat than "El Condor" and has a flute part that soars over the pop melody. It was an international pop hit.

Same here. It makes me happy to see people from the younger generations discover some of the great songs that I grew up with because it’s a shame that that music seems to have fallen by the wayside. What really makes me sad is when I hear reactors say that they’ve never heard such musicianship or poetry or emotional honesty or respect for women in the music they grew up with. I’m not saying that there isn’t good music being produced today, but in the sixties and seventies the competition for airtime was so intense artists had to really deliver the goods in order to succeed, as a rule, with few exceptions. It seems like it’s the other way around nowadays.

This song is short, but it expresses emotions and feelings. There is nothing broken about feeling emotions when you first experience the power that this kind of music can convey. It means that you have a kind and open heart and soul and can appreciate the music and the message. I respect and love both of your honest and sincere reactions. The next song by them that I would like for you to react to is "For Emily, Wherever She May Be." This is a song written about a fictitious girl that neither of them knew. You guys are so great together. ❤️ Paola Hermosin does a really nice instrumental version on the charango. (Paola Hermosin-El Condor Pasa). She explained the story that inspired the original music was about indigenous people in the Andes mountains exploited many years by a wealthy miner. On the day he died a condor soared high above them and they took it as a hopeful omen. (Mine is a poor retelling…but hopefully this adds a bit of background to the song title.).

Listening to you two talk about natural beauty and emotional reaction to beautiful music, I think you should listen to the BBC video of Joni Mitchell singing Woodstock , by herself on a grand piano piano. Not just for her angelic voice, but lyrically, she perfectly captured the Zeitgeist of the 60s/70s; worried about the present and future, but hopeful and excited about the counterculture flourishing at the time. And then, listen to the CSNY version, a rockin' arrangement that showcased the excitement of the era.

I don't know if this is the appropriate place to make a song recommendation, but that said... I love your reactions. You seem to go through the same emotions -- from exhilaration through melancholy through joy -- that I go through when listening to these songs. I would like to recommend a musical artist (actually a group of artists) that has brought me joy over the years. Their name is Steely Dan, and their work came out in the 1970s. The pinnacle of their work was the album titled Aja, and I would highly recommend the title song of the same name. Enjoy!
