Silence like a cancer grows is so true. This has been my life for so long from family. My brother told me last year this song reminds him of me. That’s truer than he knows. This has always been one of my favorite songs and one I listen to a lot.
@@glendalangley1877 same it's a high fav as well, due to the lyrics, the tone, rhythm, the meaning of how the song was scripted, the harmony. Astronomical crowds, shows the importance and popularity of the duo
That's cool. I'm always loved this music.. this song his my heart and soul as does other music from that era.. (my dad was born in 59 so he gave me his good taste in music...(.and illl never give it back to him just like the eyes I got from him is his and my lame dad joke, if that makes any sense lol sorry. )
Yeah, it's become a classic, and 100 years from now it will still be a classic. This song, and so many others of the era is what was playing in the background of my wonder years. I'm 68 years old now and it still resonates with me. ✨✌️🙂
No sound silence as the sun set No loud dog or rooster crow No sound of breeze in trees No airplanes or trucks noise Perfect Silence hearing aides dead
I had an English teacher in the 10th grade who thought Simon and Garfunkel were the best poets of modern times. We spent much time listening to and discussing their works. I developed a great appreciation for their music. All of their music are works of art.
Yay! As a high school English teacher, I'm always happy to know that some of us leave a mark. When I was in 10th grade, I shyly approached my English teacher about analyzing the lyrics of my favorite pop songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s. I wanted to write an essay on a few of them, and I thought maybe the whole class would be into doing the same. She sniffed and said "Well now, Jane, this is not really poetry, is it?" She was all around a crummy teacher and bleak person. Whenever I invite my students to bring in songs for us to discuss, it's thrilling. They learn to find deeper and broader meanings. They gain respect for different styles and eras of music, and they learn to teach each other.
I'm curious, what year were you in 10th grade? Just wondering how old the music was at the time you discussed it in an educational context. As an aside, I agree much of their music is beautiful poetry.
I'm listening , my eyes are open , now to the visions that are NOW creeping. So glad to be alive today to be able to watch this beautiful song unfold....
I find more sense in the lyrics of this song than making sense from the lyrics of a 1000 of best or popular songs that young people so worship today.born in 1961, I could drown myself in music like this.❤❤
i listen to this while playing unturned, cause my friends never wanna get on and play with me so i just listen to this while building my wooden base next to water no humans... just silence..
It’s really sad that this song was never appreciated as much as it deserves. Those who have felt the darkness in their lives have actually lived through these lyrics.
What are you talking about? This song is VERY famous, aaaaand is the soundtrack of an also VERY famous movie, a classic and a cult movie: "The graduate".
I play this song every time I feel alone and as if my heart broke This song really helped me realise that in all darkness there could be a light that gives you happiness And between all the problem that finds Me in the sound of silence It doesn't hurt me because good tends To Triumph over evil Which corrupts all people But nothing that can corrupt The sound of silence
@@user-wq7ro7ck3j The song could be interpreted as the big city lights people become mute by living their lives with anonymity to all the other 'ignoring' people around. Only advertisements like neon writings and posters 'speak' to the people, but graffities too. And by this the silence grows like cancer, seperating the people. Instead they should wake up from their sleepwalking, and respect and interact with the others. Getting them out of their isolation by taking the arms and 'hugging' each other. Do not ignore the people around you, even not in the anonymity of the towns. Keep to hug and interact with living beings as a living being!
After hearing all different covers including those in talent shows, I can’t believe I say this still resonated the spirit of the song the most. Lightness in darkness, gentle and warmth. I’m born in the 90s
I watched The Graduate immediately after I graduated from college. That film and this song got me so well. Even now, years later, I still feel so lost, like I'll never really belong, never really be a part of the world. Like I'm cursed to never _quite_ fit in. To live in the silence, alone with only the dark to keep me company
I heard them sing this live in Central Park in my teens. You could hear a pin drop, followed by the sound of silence- and then gradually, in a crescendo like no other audience-the loudest cheers I have ever heard erupted!
My me time song. Thank you very much Mr. Paul Simon and Mr. Art Garfunkel for this great song. From the bottom of my heart, I salute you. From the Pearl of the Orient Philippines. 🇵🇭💖👏👍
This is a song that always will inspire and motivate the future generations no matter what lies ahead in times to come. We are all a passenger at the end of our lives. Have all a beautiful and memorable journey.
One of my favourite songs of all time. First heard this when I was aged 7. It has remained one of my go to tunes when I'm struggling. Beautifully written.
My granddad died and this song was one of the songs they played. One week later there was a party and someone loved this song so much that he asked for it and than i was standing there crying
This version is peaceful yet vibrant, like a quit meadow, while disturbed's version is loud and powerful, like a stormy coast, both are beautiful in their own ways.
but of course you have to throw a hissy fit because its not the original, and you can't deal with the concept of two things being good in different ways. you might like burgers, and you might like ice cream, but you aren't going to put ice cream on your burger. Why? Because it sounds disgusting! Doesn't mean they are bad, they just are good in different ways
Yeah, that’s what I was thinking too. The neon sign, I think is the modern media, telling us garbage and hiding the real truth. Like they only tell us what (some) people want to hear and they never even graze the edge of truth.
December 26 at 11:17 listing to this great masterpiece and all I can think about is when they closed the casket for the final time on my beautiful 5 year old daughter who suddenly passed away away on October 26 2000. RIP my beautiful daughter ❤
This makes me LOVE my mother and DAD even more for giving me this LIFE to enjoy this wonderful forthcoming life that we all are enjoying today and tomorrow ... G*d Thank You!
Yesterday, October 16, 2023 was the 38th anniversary of the funeral of Eddie Blake. This music is always played for the funeral of Eddie Blake - a true hero overseas in Nam and at home in America.
What a brilliantly written song, with so much depth and thought provoking. Yes we are all alone at times as individual’s but our struggle is often being shared by people in similar circumstances. My favourite most beautiful song
People talking without speaking... People hearing without listening... And the people bowed and prayed... To the neon god they made... These words exactly manifest what we've turned into with smart phones nowadays!
I wish this duo hadn't had such a turbulent relationship. The world missed out on great music because they couldn't work together. Their songs were great. Their voices complimented each other so well. They created beautiful music. I know, some people simply can't work together. Sometimes that's ok. But in this case, the world lost.
This song is amazing because it could mean so many things, there is something in the sound of silence, but what hides in the dark may not always be the same, and the neon light may be a god or nothing but a lie. For me this song was about discovering who I was, the silence is my soul, it is full of the greatest hopes, and the darkest desires, it is not a good or bad thing, it simply *is*, the neon light is who I want to be, I created this image, and it is not purely me, it is who I am to you, as while I must be honest, everyone has an inescapable part that they simply can't show anyone. And even if I showed you everything, I simply don't have a true "personality", I am the most optimistic pessimist I've ever met, I fit in every stereotype of male teenager other than jock, and maybe a few female ones. The only definite traits I have is a litteraly deadly sense of empathy, and the weirdest inferiority complex I've heard of.
Your words are so true. Your words described what I feel when I listen to this song. Unbelievably searing and poetic. Thank you for your insight. Have a great life ahead.
I was brought here after reading an article about Art Garfunkel and his old friend that went blind. The story about the song's first line. I now too just realized how poetic this song is... ♥️
The Sound of Silence Lyrics [Verse 1] Hello darkness, my old friend I've come to talk with you again Because a vision softly creeping Left its seeds while I was sleeping And the vision that was planted in my brain Still remains within the sound of silence [Verse 2] In restless dreams, I walked alone Narrow streets of cobblestone 'Neath the halo of a street lamp I turned my collar to the cold and damp When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light That split the night, and touched the sound of silence [Verse 3] And in the naked light I saw Ten thousand people, maybe more People talking without speaking People hearing without listening People writing songs that voices never shared And no one dared disturb the sound of silence [Verse 4] "Fools," said I, "You do not know Silence like a cancer grows Hear my words that I might teach you Take my arms that I might reach you" But my words, like silent raindrops, fell And echoed in the wells of silence [Verse 5] And the people bowed and prayed To the neon god they made And the sign flashed out its warning In the words that it was forming And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls and tenement halls And whispered in the sound of silence"
An absolute classic. This song has individual meaning to each one who listens to it, and that is it's magic. As for the sound of silence best to reverse this and give the silence for the sound and lyrics and enjoy.
I think the original 1960’s version by Simon and Garfunkel is far better than the one by Disturbed. It’s more authentic, sincere and heartfelt, not to mention it sounds better. I grew up listening to my dad play it, he would of been about 22/23 when it was first released.
Correct me if i am wrong but you are referring to the 2 verslons of this song which was released originally in 1964 with simon and garfunkel only and they re-released it again in 1966 or 1967 with band arrangement?
The WORDS of the Prophets are written on the subway wall, and tenement halls - the sound of silence. Those Words levels high and active. A great 👍👍 song.
The sound is soothing and smooth, the words are simple and powerful, the imagery is vivid, and the meaning speaks for thise who are prepared to listen and ponder. Poets are the truthhspeakers.
