I live right near Twickenham stadium, on the whole the crowd is very well behaved, miles better then a football crowd. The Journo Stephen Jones wouldnt be Welsh by any chance?
That's exactly the journalist's point... Rugby fans, on the whole, are much better behaved BUT England fans are letting these usually high standards slip.
I played rugby union as a lad and teenager, represented the county schools, u17s and colts teams and played for the the club first team in the national leagues, I packed in at 21 because I couldn’t stand the drinking culture and ‘bravado’ that came with it. These types of antics aren’t unusual, it happenings in clubhouses and rugby pubs all over the UK. It’s definitely not an English phenomenon, I’ve seen Scot’s and the Welsh absolutely leathered applying similar antics.
Irish fan here. I'll be frank, anytime I've been to Twickenham it has been an utter pleasure; England fans have been pretty sound with me and other fans. In this instance, I think it is more to do with it being away from Twickenham and a different fan set that you would get at an England match away where the tickets were open to the general public as opposed to via the actual clubs. I have just been to both the Ireland vs Scotland and New Zealand matches and we have a different fan set compared to at the Aviva; more fair weather and less rugby-centric fans compared to those who turn up in November to watch the boys in green vs say Samoa (no disrespect to them). Also, these matches being held at 9pm doesn't help with the drinkers (not saying they don't have agency and they couldn't have simply not drunk as much).
Jim White, the most consistent hand brake in UK Sports media. We need a series of illustrations and finger paintings to help him understand what the grown ups are talking about.
Lawrence Dallagion complained about being spat on by Welsh fans a number of years ago. Did this goon write about it? You may also remember stories of referees being ruffed up by Welsh fans after a visiting ABs side beat the local provincial side. Anti-social behaviour is not unique to England and it's not unheard of in rugby.
Jim’s in his element, he loves any chance to denigrate fans. Like the rest of the media he always tars every fan with the same brush even though it’s a small minority of fans that go too far.
Yup. It's funny how the media always labels it as ' X fans' rather than a minority of 'x fans'. This is the same language that was used for Liverpool fans in the champions league final.
I actually am not against painting every fan with the same brush. For a simple reason - everyone, including the clubs and the national teams need to take OWNERSHIP of this BS as a problem. If I'm a Liverpool fan and a bunch of Liverpool fans do something stupid in or outside a stadium i DO want "Liverpool fans" to get the blame. It's the only way Liverpool fandom and institution as a whole will responsability for this stupidity to not happen next time. If you are get triggered with being lumped in with bad fans....you aren't outraged enough with what those bad fans do and are probably an enabler.
@@jeanjacqueslundi3502what can fans do to stop fans from behaving that way? Other than reporting it? Lets say hypothetically that its not people who you know
@@CG-fx9bl You can't. That's not the goal. The point is to unequivocably condemn and distance yourself from the people and behaviour. Imagine if clubs and fanbases were good at self-policing. Let's not forget the mess english football was in the past with hooligans and such. It's not like something can't be done...it's that people turn a blind eye and aren't vocal. So just do you and be vocal. I love footbal but I can't stand most football fans.
I went to three rugby world cup games in Nice last month including Wales vs Portugal and England vs Japan and the atmosphere around the city was fantastic. Everyone was mixing and was very friendly. I didn't see any trouble and I felt completely safe throughout the trip. In fact, by far the worst thing I saw while I was out there was when I was on my way to the stadium to watch England vs Japan and a presumably local man on a moped made a gesture with his eyes to mock Japanese fans.
That prissy little Jones twa+ is just trying to make headline. I was out in Japan for the England Argentina match and the Argentina fans made 10 times the racket en route to the station than we did (They were brilliant). Don't speak a lot of spanish so can't say how mucky the words were? Rugby fans (most nations) drink beer and make a din, they tend not to smash property and kick heads in unlike those of some sports oft' covered on talksport!
Went to England v Argentina at Twickenham a few years back and couldn't believe how many people either kept going to get pints of Guiness, 4 pints at a time in a tray, or going to the toilet. We were having to let people past for the entire game - ruins it. Why go to watch the game if they're not really going to watch it at all, just drink and piss?
💯 agree with this, it's getting worse every year as well! Unfortunately more tickets seem to go to corporate now than fans, due to the amount of sponsors, and price increases. The amount of people you talk to at half time now that have never even watched a game before is unreal 🤦
Stephen Jones has a reputation...a reputation for talking nonsense. I have the courage of my convictions to say that his word should not always be trusted and rugby fans are very rarely ill-behaved having been to rugby matches for many years. To say that England fans are the worst behaved is unfair, particularly as it is based on one incident which involved a tiny minority and is based on one person's word.
It’s Sucks, this happens in All Sports All Over the world and as a South African our supporters love fights and the problem the English supports wrong time wrong place. The T20cricket is worse after a game the loosing team damage property so it’s every single sport not just rugby.
This is sadly the best and worst of Jim White where his gutter journalist element comes out and he’s in his element. Fortunately, Simon tends to bring out his good side
No, you wanted to give the perception you believe this when the reality is, you didn’t really know for sure and just believed what you read in the media!
I was in Nice for the weekend of the Japan game , we watched the game in the rugby village & I saw nothing at all that could be classed as poor behaviour by any fans, this must have been a isolated incident ( I'm a Welsh fan) . we socialised with English ,Scotts, Irish, Aussies, Kiwi's & were out around town til 2am
I've been watching rugby for 40 years. Goto Cardiff on a Saturday after a National game, it will be worse than any football match you've ever been to. Total Bedlam
Scottish fans throwing bottles at the England team in 2018 st Murreyfield, and physically attacking Eddie Jones outside the hotel the following day . Oh wait butvthey are allowed
The common denominator with these things is not the sport, it’s the English. I’ve been to plenty of Irish games against multiple nations, never an issue. Problems follow the English fans regardless of the sport
I went to Japan to watch the WC in 2019, the only people I saw behaving like idiots during 3 weeks there was a group of Argies singing and throwing drinks and group of Auzzies doing a human pyramid on the train (big deal in Japan), both isolated incidents, no doubht there were others. Been going to Twickers for 25 years, never seen trouble once, yet seen fights in Cardiff during 6 nations. Again all isolated incidents, and a drop in the ocean overall. Jim just being a typical Scott 🙄 Move on......
The quicker this show is called Stelling and Jordan the better. Jim can then trot off to the BBC where they can blame the English & Brexit for all the worlds problems
Rugby is a sport where fans mix without trouble and segregation unnecessary, if few loutish idiots could ruin fan experience for rest of world. One of things people love about rugby is enjoying experience with opposition fans
Only Team in the Northern Hemisphere in the Semi Finals. Usual glorious fail from the Jocks, Irish and Welsh. 😂😂😂. 21 of Scotlands team are not Scot’s 😂😂😂. France are the best team in the NH without doubt and we’re robbed in the South Africa game. That said getting battered by the Boks is no disgrace .
Simon has this tendency to use language such as “what he/she is saying is this….”. When in fact that’s what HE has extrapolated from the article . Classic gaslighting
Loads of videos online with Irish fans with bums out getting carried away. Eddie Jones got racially abused in Scotland after the England game a few years ago. These are problems - but to claim it’s just the English is dishonest
So let’s get this straight, we are supposed to accept a Welsh journalist as moral arbiter and to pretend this is not driven by bias aimed at English supporters. Like any journalist, he is sensationalising the mundane to make a name for himself… and to sell papers. And in the world we live in now, truth is no longer a prerequisite for the news, opinion and your own truth trumps reality. Congratulations Stephen Jones you got your name up in flashing lights… I guess with no more Welsh participation on the field of play you need to make up your own stories……. Oh sorry, I should also thank Stephen for saving the sport, you are so heroic, so selfless (my @rse)
"...wrote about it- why? because he witnessed it". Then proceeds to relate an "anecdote" about fans on a tram- which only sounded like high spirits anyway. And a Welshman to boot. You couldn't make it up- or maybe someone did?
Which is the more likely reason for French policemen carrying guns in and around the rugby stadiums: 1. Concerns that English ruby fans might become violent or 2. followers of the religion of peace carrying out yet another atrocity on French soil? Surely even Stephen Jones knows the right answer.
Any event that draws tens of thousands of people (from ANY country) into the same area.....how can you expect them to all be on their best behaviour?? At the end of the day is that not what event security and police forces for???
great argument Simon " i stolen judje cuz other people are stealing too ".....the fact other fans behave bad aswell means what ?!# its a piece on that behaviour of England fans.....adress that dont go look for excuses !
What would jim white say to what goes on after an india v pakistan cricket match where scores of people get killed? Ask white if he has any comment on that?
I'm struggling to see how Simon can defend this . Thugs ruined football, then they moved on to cricket, now they're doing it in rugby. Wasn't there footage of England fans fighting in the stands?
Defending the indefensible. "What about the other countries" "There's no way of knowing if someone is offended so it doesn't matter" No families want to sit in the middle of a group of lads with their bits waving around.
