Technical control, discipline, yet totally relaxed. Every bass drum note, backbeats, in the pocket, and fills exactly placed. SP shows it’s about driving the band, enhancing it, never any mindless bashing. Bravo...

There's a good reason to prove it - just listen to his work for Mike Oldfield, the title of the song that's on my mind is "Crystal Gazing". Simon's clockwork on that one is a masterpiece😀

3 drummers from Europe are precise like that. 1 is Simon, second is Gavin Harrison and third one is Thomas Lang. I am not talking about Americans, otherwise we need to mention Porcaro, Bozzio, Vinnie, Wackerman among several others. But frankly Simon is the one that's having the best style imho

I love the fact Simon Phillip's is playing at rehearsals and there's a drummer tuning up a floor Tom oblivious to what's going on. I'd get a chair and sit in front of him and watch probably drooling at this master.

Doesn't matter what Simon is asked to play; mind-bending jazz/rock fusion or a great song we all grew up listening to, he approaches every piece with the same commitment to the music that have elevated his name to the short list of truly astounding drummers of this era.

So cool you mention this, and that was a truly unique moment! It was the Tama 40th Anniversary that he played at Meinl. As Tama distributor, Meinl is #1 in Europe. The event was just as special as the talents there. Thanks for sharing!

It really is a great concept to see all these great drummers taking the challenge to play all on the same kit, and not on their usual own kit. You can see they have to concentrate, they are not used to it, is a great chance of failing.. respect to that!!

He was originally a right handed drummer, but changed to open-handed. So, occasionally you’ll see him cross over. He’s explained it many times.

It was awesome to see Simon, so spontaneous. I could just imagine the fun, the neurons firing. For a master like Simon, it’s about neuroplasticity and being a great example of enjoying the moment. It took over fifty years for that giant fusion kit to grow and evolve. Hey Simon, please come back to Yoshi’s in Oakland, CA. Wanna find out how the “Cosmo” was. If good, the next one is on me.

I am no expert, but I have not seen Simon Phillips swap from open-handed (left-handed) to conventional right handed playing (using both hi hat and ride) so much in one track before. Really interesting.

Great to see Simon playing a groovy song with a good singer as opposed to his normal instrumental stuff. This number is a (6/8 shuffle type funky thing) classic and I love playing this song. As a drummer as well, it certainly helps to have a good singer at least (I bounce off and punctuate the singing stuff more than anything else ... singer first, bassist second, if they are on the case, and the rest of the band after that). And, when I hear fab drummers on Utube, I notice that when some of them go into a simple (funky or shuffle!) groove in their solo, the audience always appreciates it more than just the normal drum solo they are doing. Check some solos out to find out what I mean. Simon Phillips is one of the most dedicated and talented drummers out there and I hope he continues to do his stuff and inspire us all for many years to come.

Even weirder to see him on a four-piece, or a five-piece. He sounds fantastic, of course - he's a great musician - but for years he's made a point of always working with that monster kit he usually has, because he's accustomed to it, and it gives him every possibility he might want to put in to a song.

@@miami2017 He used play his ride "traditional way" till circa 1984-85 as well as with his left hand, then there was only one ride on the left side of his kit, but two chinas. Since circa 2010 Simon doesn't play china with his right hand. For me, it's like this jungle snare instead of second hi-hat - there's no second China, but there are two rack toms instead😃 Still, he's got that gong tom and let it be forever and a day😁

@@acimvideos2259im 49. started playing when I was 12. im left handed and right footed. my teacher refused to let me play open handed. so my right hand became dominant at drumming. I too am struggling to teach myself open handed drumming. I have found a few other open handed drummers that have inspired to keep trying. check out Will Kennedy. that guy is amazing.
