Mechanical flip dot displays were a technology used on buses in the 1990s and early 2000s to display route number and destination information. These unique displays have since been replaced with modern low energy LED matrices, but enjoy a second life in the maker community.
In this talk, Simon Prickett shows you how a flip dot display works and how to control it from a Raspberry Pi using Node.js or Python. You'll also see it in action as a component of a system that tracks and identifies passing aircraft!
