Simple and easy to follow tutorial for using Registax to process and stack Astrophotography images 

It really is astonishing. I remember seeing a book about telescopes at my uncle (released in the mid 1970s ) and it showed pictures from the telescope of mount palomar (it has a mirror of 5 metres ..it was the biggest or second biggest telescope back then - i'm sure you know it). And i saw the pictures of Jupiter viewed by mount palomar. It was directly photographed - no postprocessing etc ... And it was a quiet blurry image. Yes the cloud-bands were there ,and the red spot etc - but thats it. It wasnt really impressive i would say (espescially because i knew the Voyager-Images). And i have to say: nowadays even with a cheap 120mm refraktor and enough stakking images , the results are better than the mount palomar telescope in the early 70s !! Its amazing how far amateur astrophotography came. And i think there is more possible. There are now AI-enhanced technologys which also can applied for astrophotography (i didnt saw it yet - but i saw very convinient examples: making a high resolution video out of a low resolution video , by artificial intelligence - because movement and differences between pixels are an additional layer of information , which arent fully used by the ''lucky imaging technique'' of registax. So i am sure, in the next 10 years there is more possible in astrophotography by artificial intelligence. Like you mentioned it absolutely correct: it was a unrealistic dream 60 years ago, to make such incredible pictures with amateur budget. But its possible today!

I guess your your hate for moon stems from the moonlight making shooting dim DSOs harder. I personally think that moon is one of the best targets to get started in astrophotography. It's super bright, so can easity shoot on flimsy mounts, you can track easily using Alt-Az mounts, is robust againt shakes and windy nights. You can shoot the moon from light polluted skies which is the best that a big population can afford. It's also less confusing for newbies because what image is shot is visible in the viewfinder( if camera supports that ), because there is no need for long exposures.

PIXYBASHER I’ve worked it out I think, on the top tool bar of RegiStax around the middle is a box for CPUs which by default is 8, change this to 1 and hopefully it should work.

@@mark1hancock hi mark, I think I've also found a fix.. I was loading 40 ish 18mp images and I think it was too much so I reduced the size of each picture. I think it's trial and error but for now I've got it..I'll also try what you said as well. Cheers bud.

Hi Pete, what format is your picture in that you are loading in? Is it just one image you are opening or a selection to stack?

Hi, thanks for the reply, we discovered it was the laptop we had didn't have the right processor to run the software, we have now got another and it all seem good just need to practice and I'll watch over your video aswell 😊

Israel Chaidez Try setting your processing cores in the top to 1 or 2. Registax sometimes has problems with many cores. If that didn't help try to lower your align point count. Hope that helps.

Thank u,,, I find another program PIPP that help to frame my RAW files and DSS (Deepskystacker) to made the tiff and just play with the wavelet on registax and works like a charm thanks... lets see how turns out with the pictures of the supermoon of this morning.. Thanks..

"when i load an image it defaults to the 'stacking' tab" --> The 'default' behaviour of Registax, after loading a video/sequence, is not to head straight to the stacking tab. You need to get your version of Registax back to default behaviour. To do that, uninstall the program, re-download and re-install it. Be careful with changing preferences.

The idea of using a sequence is to try to ensure the best possible stacked composite - a final image composite that's 'better' than any single image. Different frames of any sequence (whether individually taken, burst or video) may (and generally do) yield better quality in particular areas of the image and by stacking these, you aim (through the software) to achieve the best image quality across the entire image. This is not too far removed from something like stacking a variable exposed sequence for HDR processing. The end result of that would be maximum detail across the entire image.

Reduce the length and/or frame rate of your input video/sequence.

you need to reduce your image size before trying to stack had the same prob if you google image size it tells you maximum you can you had the same prob cant remember what it is though

I was a pro astrologer for a while long ago. Worked at Australia Natural University (Mt. Stromlo facility) and at University of Virginia's McCormick & Fan Mt. observatories (back when UVa was a great school). We exist. I'm still an amateur. :)
