What's your setup for recording your adventures?!

My current kit that goes with me is a Fuji X-T2, 18-55 f2.8-4, and the same Sirui tripod you mentioned in the video (though I'll often leave the tripod behind due to weight). I use a Peak capture on my pack for carrying the camera, with just a basic shower cap to cover it if it starts raining, and an extra freezer bag to throw it all in if I have to cross any streams deep enough to make me anxious. edit: should probably note, I'm strictly using this for photography, no video

Interesting setup and well executed video. I have very similar thoughts on camera gear--I've been using the A7C now for the last 2.5 years and it's worked great. I've stuck with the 35mm 1.8 lens mostly because its lighter than a zoom, but I hear good things about the Tamron zoom for the weight and also the price. Cool to have come up upon your channel, I also keep my backpacking gear as UL as possible to carry all the camera stuff and document my hikes. Currently using the Zpacks multipack to carry my setup but I can see the camera pod from Hyperlite would be handy with extra lenses.

Kraig Adams shot some of his adventures just using the iPhone 14 Pro. You can definitely choose situations where the dedicated full frame camera will excel but for vlogging on RU-vid, modern phones can do a great job. Nobody should feel they “need” anything else. As they say, the BEST camera is the one that’s with you. Not meaning to sound anti-DSLR or mirrorless at all. It’s a big commitment from both a cost and weight perspective, though. I’d recommend people make a few videos with their phone before going out and investing. I used to teach photography and I really like the craft. But every time I’m backpacking and I try to shoot a video… well let’s just say it’s a ton or work and not for everyone. I still take 100s of photos but creating videos is a huge distraction to my outdoors experience. I guess I just don’t have the muscle memory for it. I’m in awe of those folks, such as yourself, that excel and seem to really enjoy making videos in nature. I really appreciate your efforts and thank you for sharing your work.

Thanks for the insight here, Andy! I'm planning on upgrading my iphone here at some point so that I have a phone that shoots flat footage and I can start incorporating a second camera, or leaving the "big" one at home from time to time. Yeah you've hit on a good point that doesn't really get talked about much - one doesn't just go on a trip and whip out a camera from time to time and come back with a decent video (in my experience.) It really is a whole bunch of stopping and starting and looking around for angles that can take away from the flow of a hike. Some days I'm lucky if I make it 7 miles if I'm recording. I'm realizing that I tend to overshoot, though, so I'm working on a solid strategy for recording big mile days.

Dude this is very helpful. I have many people on trail ask about my setup. I don’t normally do videos but now I know where to send people to watch about my this topic. I run with an A9ii or the Fuji x100v. Great vid man🤙

Excellent video....thanks! I'm in the process of upgrading my camera gear from using my iPhone while hiking to the Sony A7IV with a wide angle lens and storing it in a large Hyperlite camera pod. Looking forward to using it all in 2024!

Thanks for the comment! Jealous of the A7IV! That's a sweet camera, and will probably be my next upgrade.

You're very welcome and good to know! Just bought a dummy battery for it so I can use it for zoom meetings without it overheating and turning off.@@timbschwartz

Hey thanks for the video, I appreciate all the details. I would definitely love to see how you set up your camera with all those preset you talked about the one for slow-mo the one for oh shit something's happening. I would definitely love to see that.

I am looking to get the camera pod for my a7c as well. Do you think it would fit in the "regular" sized pod with the Tamron glass? It should fit a compact prime but I can't tell if it would hold the zoom lens 🤔
@timbschwartz
@timbschwartz 2 месяца назад
Thanks for the question! I bought the regular originally, and returned it. I can't remember if it fit the 28-75 or not, or if just the 17-28. Either way I much prefer the larger version, as it leaves a bit of room for extra gear in there, or if I want to bring a telephoto.
