As per a viewers request, I go into some detail on what my setup is that I used to tow my kayak behind my bike. I say simple because no fabrication or cutting is required to accomplish what I made. A few "off the shelf" items are all that is needed and they will be listed below:

Great video! We did a similar thing. We live near a famous kayak/snorkel spot that fills up on the weekends. They wont let cars in but bikes can get in. We like to use their kayak launch, so we made a kayak towbar for each of our bikes.

Could you show a close up of how you "attach" the kayak to the steel tube? I really enjoyed your video. This is a much more inexpensive option than buying an entire kayak trailer that attaches to the bike.

That is a great idea! Makes me think I could rig something for pulling my beach cart down the beach for surf fishing. Thanks for the idea!

You know what... You are absolutely right on the pulling a beach cart for surf fishing... That one totally skipped my train of thought... I guess I'll be following your lead on that one... Awesome! Thanks for pointing that one out! 😊👍👍👍👍

Very nice. Great way to get back into those lakes where there’s only a service road I have a canoe trailer and am wondering if I could build a contraption to the bike. Just unhitch the trailer from the truck and attach it to the bike. Those trailers are so light that I’m thinking that could work.

Off topic, but that's a sweet red Tercel you have parked there! I used to have a '97 Tercel coupe...still miss that car.

Yes sir it is! One of the most reliable toyota cars a person can own. I owned it for thirteen years and just sold it a couple of weeks ago and I'm probably going to regret it. 😳

Very cool! What do you figure is the max tow weight for that 1x1x36? Did you try the slayer on it?
@FFHTV
@FFHTV 5 лет назад
Thanks TJ! No clue on what the max weight would be for the square steel tube but if the kayak is center weighted correctly on the cart, as it should be, there will not be much static weight at all on the end of the tube to contend with as the general forces on the tow bar itself will be mainly linear when it's pulling. In the video you can see when I'm pulling (6:19) that the tow rope is slack most of the time indicating that there is almost no static weight pulling down against the tow bar. I balance out the kayak to keep just enough weight on the nose to maintain some tension between the tow rope and the tow tube. I have not tried out the slayer but I can tell you that the abaco kayak shown in the video feels much heavier to me than the slayer when I'm picking it up so with that said the slayer would be just as easy, if not easier to pull due to its shorter length when compared to the abaco.
@OldLadyAngler
@OldLadyAngler 5 лет назад
Yeah that's true. Getting the load balanced is tough with my c-tug, but your cart looks a lot better since it's wider.

Max tongue weight should be around 10% of trailer gross weight =D

Good job sir, Is it difficult to go uphill with 3 wheels and kayak?
@FFHTV
@FFHTV 3 года назад
Thanks! Depending how steep of a hill it can be since the 3 wheeler is a single speed bike as opposed to a 5 or 10 speed bike where you can change gears to make for easier pedaling up a hill.
@ddahstan6876
@ddahstan6876 Год назад
A little late but, yes, can be a little difficult if you're riding single speed. However, if you have some gears with the bike you're riding then you should be OK because that Kayak weighs probably around 50lbs and wheel-aided. I've hauled a person who weights more than 100lbs on a bike back rack, feels like a dead weight, and it was fine going uphill (not super steep 45deg type of course) using 9sp bike.

I know it's simple for some..yet I have not that much with bike hitches and riding with a trailer. I'm doing DIY bike trailer . I find my needs change . Love your video but I still in mad search to see the system connect action and the. Way it connects to cart. Hope that makes sense. Maybe you could update as a 2nd with this added?
@FFHTV
@FFHTV Год назад
Hi JourneyBrook! The tow hitch bar extending past your bicycle seat does not connect to a kayak cart but only to the nose of the kayak itself. Here is a link to an image showing how I hang the nose of the kayak off the end of the tow bar. Hopefully this info helps you out and thanks for watching the video. 😊👍 floridafishhunter.files.wordpress.com/2022/04/img_2410.jpg

Are you using a caribiner to attach the kayak to the hitch? What size? Also, what is the weight of your kayak?
@FFHTV
@FFHTV 4 года назад
No, I just used the carry strap on the nose of the kayak which was just a looped chord with a plastic handle on it.
@FFHTV

The kayak in the video is 80-90 pounds

The dangling rope connection kinda makes it look; ummmm 😒.
@FFHTV
@FFHTV 4 года назад
Hi Dale, I have never had any issues with this setup using parachord handles when towing. Parachord has a weight capacity of 550 lbs which are the ones that came on my kayak which I use tow with. When a kayak is properly balanced on a cart there is barely any weight being placed on the nose of the kayak which makes it an ideal situation for when towing.

floridafishhunter I think you have the best set up for what you have gong on there. I didn’t care for the hanging rope idea more for the esthetics value than function. I decided to use a mid size spring I found a Ace; I covered that with some anti chaffing material used to cover hydraulic hoses. Again; the rope is perfectly functional I’m sure but the spring does dampen the swinging and jerking when starting or stopping and I’m pulling my kayak with a two wheel bicycle. I also used a golf bag cart so; there are a few differences.

looks like it works. The hitch is in my opinion not well designed though. Those four bolts to clamp your seat post is not a good way to go. A better way would be to have a clamping sleeve and have a bolt going in from the side, hence locking it in position properly without clamping and damaging the seat post. But you would need to drill a hole through the seat post. And there is no reason to remove the seat. just pull the seatpost out.
