Duracell for length, varta for speed. Energizer bad.

It would be awesome to count the number of loops completed on the longevity tests. That way total work could be measured by multiplying its mass and total distance traveled. An optical counter and an arduino might be a really easy solution.

So basically Energizer batteries suck

This is super interesting. I know a bit about small battery formulation and I was watching the infinite loop with a dismissive eye. It deforms too easy, isn't the same shape each go and is just 'duration'. The duration test would only show you how long it went around in the crappy circle BUT it didn't count the times they went around in that time period. I'm not familiar with Varta but I know Duracell and Energizer are always competing and trying to one-up each other. In the 90's each really pushed on the AA batteries 'power' over 'longevity' to power electronic devices like Walk-Mans (high draw over a short period of time) vs powering a smoke detector (low draw over a long period of time). I assumed that the Energizer didn't last as long in the loop but went more times. The second test (straight line speed) really was surprising to me. I assumed the Energizer would walk away with the win. I think another test like this is in order, maybe a bad batch of Energizers? Also, make the loop more round and stable!

Nice. The Drag race test are bit useless since weight has a huge factor to boost up the acceleration received.. Really in that case you are testing the best Weight/Energy ratio but usually that's not what someone looks for when using that kind of batteries. The infinite loop test on the other hand is good because you are testing the accumulated Energy but you have to consider also in this case Weight that has influence on the circuit bending and so on the loss of energy. An accurate test would be the infinite loop with something holding the circuit firmly in place.

Would have been interesting to know the actual number of loops each battery made in the infinity loop. Couldn't a battery move faster and do more loops but last less time? Eg. spending the same amount of energy but lasting less time, so you can't tell which one is best from just time alone?

I think the infinite loop test is flawed, there's nothing keeping the shape loops consistent other than the tape and the varta looks like it massively deflects the loop compared to the other 2 which would increase friction and decrease efficiency, perhaps if the loop was kept more round the test would be more fair?

I dare someone to try this with an 18650 cell.

It would be best to randomize which battery takes which parallel track. Maybe the top track just had less resistance, but that kind of error could be corrected by averaging multiple runs across the various tracks.

Expensive for the future, I mean a real life electric gravity magnet train.

There is some black magic behind how batteries are formulated. You'll never hear Duracell claim to last 5% longer than Energizer or Energizer claim any number better than Duracell. When you formulate a battery two of the variables you try to balance are current and shelf-life. Batteries formulated for high-drain devices give more current, but don't last as long on the shelf or in devices when not being used. Batteries that have a really long shelf life don't give lots of current. Those are great for TV remotes and clocks, etc. So both Duracell and Energizer (and others) all try to guess what kind of mix of gadgets most people use. They average the number of high and low drain devices and try to average their formulas to hit that sweet spot to work pretty well in most of them. So depending on the devices you have, Duracells may work better in some, Energizers better in others. Also some trivia - In many cases Duracell and Energizer batteries come out of the same factory - they are private labels made by contract manufacturers.

I don't think that it's important to buy a battery, because it won the drag race. However, Duracell is the best option, because of its longer life. Varta is probably just a little lighter than Duracell, that's why it won the drag race

Would guess the VARTA has a slightly higher voltage out of the box. Did you take a reading with a multimeter?

I do not buy Duracell anymore because the have a strong tendency to leak. I have so many ruined things, mostly caused by Duracell. Some things were also ruined by AC Delco AA batteries. Energizer has never leaked-now I see the downside.

There is another potential problem with EVERY test on this video. To read the "DURACELL" name, this battery is run with the negative end first. The Varta and Energizer batteries both read with their positive end first. In order to be consistent, all three batteries must be put through the tests with either the positive or the negative ends first. This may be of no consequence but it is possible it does make a difference. Too bad. Minimize the variables and validate the test.

I've measured time of first 3 laps: E - 4,7; V - 4,1; D - 4,2 sec. Duracell - winner, Energizer sucks. Duracell is bit more heavyweight, e.g. have more friction.

Can we say Varta lasts less than Duracell, but despite last 10 minutes less, it's high speed makes last less? Maybe Duracell gives more total energy along time and Varta gives more power... I wonder how many cycles did Varta and Duracell, and how many laps did Varta in 27 minutes and how much Duracell in that 27 minutes... And total number of laps for that 37 minutes of Duracell. Doesn't appear reasonable Varta be able to achieve same number of laps then Duracell in that 10 extra minutes. Duracell for remote controls, Varta for RC cars toys

I'd like to see this test with the more expensive variants ie. Duracell Quantum, Energizer Ultimate Lithium, etc. I have also never heard of Vanta before. Not sure that I have every seen them in a store before so maybe they're Canadian or something? Also, would like to see this tested with the cheap alternate batteries that you can get at Walmart and such. The ones that you get like a 30 pack for $8.
