I have seen and heard lone calves in the woods. They would continue to make the repetitive sharp mews for long periods of time while moving through the woods. I think you are correct to a point, but I believe the bulls chasing the hot cows separate the calf from the momma cow. The calf cannot stay with the momma cow running from the bull, who has his nose in her butt. Those lone calves making those lost or gathering calls looking for momma are an indication a hot cow is in the area. Those bulls know the calf mews will tell them (sound) where the activity is happening, and they come in hoping to get a smell of the pheromones. I have used that technique on several occasions in Colorado. Thanks for sharing the info, not many hunters no about this.

I was told the reason! Some men like to fight, most men don't. Some bulls like to fight, the challenge bugle works on those bulls. Almost every man is going to put his guard down and go help a child that's crying or a baby that is crying. The bull is the exact same way, he hears a calf in distress he's going to go see what's wrong...

@@CliffGrayI’ve heard this exact “child in distress” theory and have always tried to utilize it a bit. I’ve only killed one bull so far and it wasn’t during that type of setup though so who really knows

@@CliffGray this was the theory of Dan Kloer, he owns "deep timber sounds". Elk bugle and calls. His BIG thing, at least 20 years ago, when I hunted with him was "understand the language", not "speak the language". -- he really seemed to know his shit.

I think more than this tactic works would be more accurate to say this principle works. I’ve literally only experienced the “calf storm” maybe three times in almost ten years of calling. The principle is that when elk are rutting they are gathering. They are a herd animal and when they hear calves, cows, whatever vocalizing like it’s normal they feel safe and like no predators are around. You can accomplish this principle with way more than just cow sounds. Totally agree with the principle but I think if you go sit and just use calf sounds public land you’re going to spend a lot of time and have a mix from the bottom with calves to big bulls occasionally

I chirped one time...And a Calf came out of the trees, chirping constantly! Ran the other way up a hill, then he realized he was going the wrong way...Spun a 180 and ran right up to me at full draw...He almost poked his nose on my broadhead. LOL 😅 They're crazy!

Sounds like using calves as a decoy, and probably works best during peak rut. I'll have to try this out next archery season. As calls in general go, personally i've just been using a cow call, letting out a few mew's every now and then and not worry about it. Occasionally something comes, most of the time they probably just think i'm another elk. Although, you have me wondering if i did a calve call last year and didn't realize it. Had a bachelor group come RUNNING in on me, about 3 minutes or so after calling. Got way too close to one of those bulls for comfort, about shit my pants as he slammed on the brakes and pointed the business end of his tines towards me at 3 yards. But this was august, not september. I think it was that very unique period where elk were still in their groups, but that itch to rut was just barely starting.
