In this video I will introduce the Simple Harmony project with some essential points that you need to consider when stitching and starting your box, outlining everything you need to keep in mind as you work. I will then teach you how to prepare your box for finishing by removing the original hardware, filling the holes and sanding them down ready for papering, and finally to make bristol paper patterns that will aid you in both stitching and finishing.
All information for the Simple Harmony SAL, including a full materials list can be found here: katie-strachan...
Used in this video:
#0 Philips screwdriver
Wood filler, palette or putty knife for application, and sandpaper
100 lb weight vellum bristol paper
Scissors, ruler, pencil, and artist's or painter's tape

Wow! That is taking a lovely pattern to a whole new level. What a wonderful box you have created. I have Jacob’s pattern and with wall space very much dwindling, I had been wondering where I could hang it. Search is over! I’ll make your exquisite box instead. What a fabulous idea. Thank you so much - enjoy! A box finish is so unusual, really striking - and as you note, doesn't take up wall space! Perfect for the prolific stitcher

I’m new to your RU-vid which I find very wonderful. Can you write down the thread assortment weight size and manufacture of the threads for the simple harmony second finish They are beautiful. Now II’ve found simple harmony tutorials. I see two, how many are there

Thank you and welcome! The thread is made by Au Ver a Soie and a full materials list is on my website - it's linked in the description for this episode as well as in all the tutorials. That should have all the information you need, and if you're in the US the Attic has been kitting thread and fabric for Simple Harmony. There are a total of 12 tutorials. From my main channel page scroll down, there's a dedicated playlist called Simple Harmony tutorials that has all of them. Welcome and happy stitching!

So I’m looking at your box. Is there a pattern to follow for the stitching or do we make our own? where is the stitch along you mention?

You may want to watch flosstube #7 as it introduces the project more generally, but it's adapted from Modern Folk Embroidery's Forget Me Not chart. There are detailed layouts linked on the main Simple Harmony page on my website, which you can find in the description for this episode. There are also two video tutorials as part of the Simple Harmony tutorials that cover the changes made to the chart. The SAL is informal - there's a hashtag on instagram, #simpleharmonySAL, but I'm not running zoom meetings or anything. I hope that helps.

Fabulous tutorial. I can’t wait to see more. Very helpful tips and a thorough explanation. Thank you for taking time to film and to share. BTW I made a sparkly snowflake yesterday with my Swarovski 2mm inspired by you. Now to finish into an ornament. 🌟

Hi Katie, I just discovered your channel recently and I am so happy I did. Your designs and stitching are just beautiful. I am going to do the Simple Harmony box and I am gathering my supplies. Can you give the measurements for a "fat half" of the cloth please.
@katiestrachanembroidery
@katiestrachanembroidery 2 года назад
Thank you and welcome to the SAL! A fat half is a cut that goes the full length of the yard - 36" - and half the width of the fabric selvedge to selvedge. So the exact dimensions vary based on the width of the fabric but on Russian Tea Cake I believe it is about 35"x36". Happy stitching!

Hi Katie - fabulous tutorial! I won’t be making the Forget-Me-Not box, but this is so useful if I decide to make a smaller trinket box as I’m thinking of doing. Thank you so much!

Enjoy! The series is geared towards the Simple Harmony box but the method applies to any kind of box you might want to make so it should be useful for you!

I am so happy that I heard about your Flosstube on Brenda and Serial Starter. Watching your videos made me feel like I will give this project a go, maybe I can succeed. I ordered the Russian Tea Cake linen and the cross stitch pattern tonight. I will watch your videos over and over, you are so inspirational.

Thank you so much, that's so kind and I am incredibly flattered! You definitely can succeed in making this box - it's all full crosses and you can even do the letters and numbers over 2 if you don't want to do the over 1, the pattern has alternate charts for over 2. So you definitely have the stitching, and you can certainly manage the finishing. The keys to finishing are patience and practice - this will be picked up in later videos, but make sure to do some practice with gluing to get comfortable with the glue and the application, and that will really help when you get to the real thing. The tutorials should guide you through every step of the process. Truly, the biggest thing is confidence and working yourself up to do it. Glad to have you on the SAL!!

Hi Katie, Watched all the tutorials to date this evening. Thank you for teaching us and sharing what not to do from your prior mistakes! Your tutorials are so thorough and watching you create filmed in real time is and will be so very helpful in the process of covering this box. I can’t wait to get started on the stitching and then finishing this beautiful box. You are very generous to share your knowledge and time in creating these videos. Thank you for this lovely gift 😊

Thank you for joining me on the journey! I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I have. And yes, I have learned a lot of lessons from many and varied mistakes so lots of hard earned wisdom to share on that front! Hopefully the tutorials can help everyone in the SAL avoid some of my past facepalm moments...
