OFF GRID HOMESTEADING With The Boss Of The Swamp

When I was a boy, all I wanted was to live in a cabin in the woods when I grew up. Everyone told me I couldn't, wouldn't, shouldn't, and squashed my dreams with discouragement. I proved them wrong by following my own path. I built my first off grid cabin when I was 18 and have been conquering dreams ever since.

MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
Video of icebox:
Video of Gas Refrigerator:
Propane Freezer:
Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

The exact message I needed at 18. Forty years later I got the degree (working four jobs to pay my way), colon cancer and as an added bonus four heart attacks. I never wanted the American Dream, but didn't listen to my gut. My experience now tells me when you don't listen to your gut and follow your heart your body will revolt. Wish I had a friend like you back then.

Did a lot of it to please my pop. He was always there encouraging me to be a leader and set an example for my four younger siblings. You've done well for yourself and should take pride in that but is always rewarding to hear praise from someone you respect. What kind of art do you do? I paint landscapes with classic cars, but art market died out here when the housing bubble burst.

Boy.....I wish more young people could get your message through their thick skulls. I'm 71 and have done things my way most of my life. Always colored outside the lines to the displeasure of my family and many friends. Moved out at the age of 16 and lived in the YMCA and went to school and worked a part time job to pay the rent and keep my truck on the road. Have lived in the same house on a lake in up-state NY for 30yrs that's paid for. Retired at 35..... Acquire a marketable skill and work for yourself. Learn how to think for yourself. Great video Boss.

@@Food-Dharma I had been in management and sales. A corporate officer and VP of a NY corporation. Retired at 35 because of a freak accident at work. But I had always enjoyed working with wood. I taught myself how to build picture frames. Bought up some older used framing equipment and ended up with a full commercial framing business in my basement. Worked craft shows, street fairs, festivals, flea markets, and native American pow wow's all over NY State, PA and all through New England.

+Deep South Homestead Funny how it seems to work out that way. I was always told I couldn't, shouldn't and wouldn't. I quit school in 8th grade, the black sheep, the bad seed who would never make anything of himself but I retired at 42 and did so by doing everything I wanted to do, not what I was told to do. Life is what you make of it. Happy New Year :-)))))))

I so enjoy your videos. I, like you, dreamed as a child of living in the woods. I have been told my whole life that a woman can't live the way I dream of. It's too hard, dangerous, etc. I have worked my life to provide for my family and now closing in on 49 and widowed many years I am embarking on my dreams. I may be starting late, but one day and step at a time I will be living free of the entanglements of "The American Dream". Thanks for the inspiration, lessons, humor and instruction. With God's blessings.

This was just the video that I needed! I am 16 years old, and just starting my Junior year of high school and everyone including my family thinks that in order to have a happy and productive life you have to go to college! I was recently told that the money my grandma and grandpa have saved up for my "college" will not be given to me until I go to college. My father has me listening to Dave Ramsay and I love the thought of not having debt and living a happy life! I am not sure what I want to do after high school, I am thinking of being a welder or a truck driver, neither of which you have to go to college for. My father is a huge influence on me and is there to support me the whole way through. Neither of my parents went to college and the both have very successful businesses. My mom has a catering business and my dad has a trucking company. My grandparents still dont approve of me not going to college but i am going to do what i want to do with my life that I think will be the best. I just have to have a plan. Thank you for sharing your story, this video really inspired me! Thanks
@Growmap

+Duncan Haiar Knowing how to weld is always a skill worth having that can make you a good living - but learn to protect your ears, hands, arms and lungs! Your grandparents probably want you to go to college because back then that was the thing we were told would make you successful. In their generation, a college education led to a lifetime career. That ALMOST worked for me - but I had 2 years too few and lost out on a full retirement and health benefits because of it. A college education is no longer the golden ticket it once was. It doesn't work very well anymore and the debt it requires is enormous. Many go to college only to regret the debt they took on and then start businesses they could have started much better with the money they wasted on college. Doing what your parents did makes far more sense. Working in their businesses to get a better idea what you want to do in life would be a good idea. Do you want to be the business owner or the hourly wage slave? Watch Kiyosaki's Rich Dad Poor Dad material or read the book. Share that with your parents. Share the video in www.dirjournal.com/guides/job-choices/ with them. If that doesn't sway them, I'd be happy to talk to them and explain how the world has changed. You can find out more about me at LinkedIn.com/in/growmap - I know what I'm talking about and I help many people get freelance work online. Current estimates show that 46% of people will be freelancing by 2020 (off the top of my head - I can find the studies and share the links if you want them). This is because jobs and careers are gone and not coming back. There are skills that pay 6 figures you can learn from online courses that cost a few thousand dollars - IF you have an interest and aptitude for conversion optimization, lead generation or analysis. Please don't go to college until and unless you know what you want to do. Doing it "to find yourself" was ok when it was cheap, but is a very, very bad idea if you have to borrow to do it. Contact me if you want to discuss this further. The best way is on Skype. My username is growmap and Skype is available free online.

Most folks your age don't know what they want to do. They haven't experienced enough in life yet. I never aspired to be an aircraft mechanic, I aspired to be a pilot, but my training led me to being an aircraft mechanic who can fly upside down if I want to, I suggest you shoot much higher, if you want to create art or inventions, or build race car frames, and need to weld, go for it. Don't expect to fulfill your dreams working for the man as a welder. I hope you expect more of yourself than paying the bills. My job allows me to build kit planes and to fly. My point is that you shouldn't go to college to fulfill somebody else's expectation. Find a passion and go for it. Don't be ordinary because its easier. Be extraordinary! You have an opportunity that most people don't have. If it requires college, go for it... full on attack!

WOW!!! I showed this video to my soon to be 62 year old father, who is still in debt up to his eye balls and no chance of retiring. He's been on that "one way train" all of his life, and the train tickets keep getting more and more expensive. He sat there quietly soaking in everything you said and at the end he looked up and said "This guy has it figured out!" You hit the nail on the head! As a fairly young man, I find myself very fortunate to have seen this video! I made the decision to get out of debt last year and have successfully completed that. My next step is to build a self sufficient homestead. That will start taking place this year. THANK YOU for the inspiration!

Over 2 years ago I was told forget learning how to do watercolor paintings by an artist that had no idea of my capabilities. I am learning every day more and more and even my parents told me art won't pay the bills so I was steered away from drawing and painting. I wish I hadn't listened to them, I was always pulled by artists by my heart and always wanted to be able to live my life doing it full time. Now at 60 I've finally learned portraits, landscapes, and learning watercolor. Wouldn't it have been wonderful to have had art in my life growing up and done what I had wanted? I sure hope other's hear what your saying. I hope they aren't sitting in their living rooms like I am wondering how they are going to find a job when they hit 60 without living with their kids to help support themselves and help their children support themselves. Today it takes 2 to 2 1/2 incomes to live in the city. How I wish I could get my family out into the country and show them life doesn't have to be that 9 to 5 rat race. I'm going to help my daughter and her husband save money to get out of the rat race. I hope every teen that is in ear's reach really hears what your saying. Do you still draw any more? I can't imagine not doing it now, a sketchpad is always at my side and not challenging myself by trying to draw something each day leaves me feeling like something is lost and I have to go find it. lol

I just shared this video with my brother who's struggling with (I call it) the Monster and is looking for a way out. We found your channel while searching for ways to recondition our cast iron pans. We found a whole lot more than that! When I was eight I had the same dreams - the simple life. It got lost when I got lost trying to 'do it right' and color in the lines (sometimes). Now I'm free thanks to the Universe helping me (by way of a bankruptcy in 2012) and I've come full circle back to living my dream. Baby steps, no debt, no credit, work with honor, make a living, not earn a living, simplify. Thank you, Sheila, Will & Dawn

Great video! Brings back lots of memories, and I am one of those people who does not conform. That is probably why my narcissistic mother just never had a nice thing to say about me. And, my younger narcissistic half sister who is a slave to the corporate world had nothing nice to say about me either! I was and am the artist, nature lover, thinker, and questioner of my family. My family now, is my dog! We live on very little and love hanging out together. Thanks, I do love the simple life!

Hey boss! You sound like me in a lot of ways! I always say "The train is running out of track!" I see in my job most everyone has nice fancy cars and big houses but in reality they have very little!! it's all on paper so there forced to have that cookie cutter lifestyle. Being debt free and being able to do even some of the simple things in life is "Priceless". When I was about 10 I built a small cabin "fort" and cut all the trees with a hatchet that my dad had given me and to this day I still have it some 53 years later. I enjoy burning wood have my own garden and now looking into capturing rain water for our vegetables. Your an amazing inspiration to everyone!!! Please keep up the great work! Now if you don't mind I'm going to watch your video again!! lol Thanks Again Boss!!!!!!

I like the way you make your point without shaking your finger or lecturing, just putting it out there to chew on. Lots of us grew up on the edge in the late 60's or early 70's. A few made their break from the treadmill but we mostly opted for getting ahead through debt. Many of us got chewed up by the machine. The carrot was always immortality. When you accept that all you really have is here and now...the simpler life makes more sense. I believe there is always time to make a change, time to move toward the edge and peek over. Thanks JC.

@Growmap

+ChileExpatFamily Anyone with family or friends is likely to get crap. This reminds me of a story I suspect is true. Do you know how they catch crabs in the ocean? They throw buckets in and the crabs crawl in. Why don't they just crawl back out? Because the other crabs drag them back in when they try to escape. People are like that. The ones the conditioning took on are conditioned to try to keep those of us born to crave freedom from getting out of the nets.

Philosophy 101, my Brother! This video should be shown to kids starting in the 4/5th grade to the 12th grade Civics class. Jeff Rowe (Dirtiest Jobs?) is pushing for more young people to learn a trade or two, because 1. College isn't for everyone and 2. One can make a very good living off them; they're universal in how to live. I sit here with some life altering medical problems. I have the $$$, I have the desire(s), and I have the dreams of living a simple life. I am stuck in the Phoenix metro area (5 million+ people(holy crap)) but I have my own home, no bills, really nothing keeping me from chasing that dream of 40 acres + a small cabin and two or three BC's; except this bundle of crap (medical problems) I received during Desert Storm. There I go again giving myself a pity party, but one day I will achieve my goal, because I will never give up. Say hey to Frankie for me. PS I know this is asking a lot from you. Ever thought about making a series of videos on how to buy the right kind of land, like, what to look for, what to ask about, does it have easy to reach aquifer that kinda stuff.

You are absolutely on track . In 7th grade the school Guidance Director called my mother in for a conference . He told her that I would be a complete failure in life .He stated that because I had no solid plans as to what career path I should follow and showed no interest in researching what college I would attend that she and my dad should accept the fact that I would become a burden to society .NEEDLESS to say , my mom really tore him a new one and walked out and went home . Long story short , I graduated from High School , got a great job at NEW JERSEY BELL and retired at age 52 . My wife and I have great children and grand children . I am 65 now and every day that passes , passes on our terms . Thanks for the always great videos and subject matter ..

Before the government decided to make a cookie cutter education system, folks went to school up to a certain age. After that it was up to them if they wanted to pursue a higher education. Most went on to an apprenticeship to learn the profession they chose. Because of that, people in general were more successful. Notice I said successful, not rich. Success means different things to different people. Teachers today are growing tired with the educational system because they know it's a waste for most of their students to keep going through school, even more so for so many to be pushed toward college. To provide them with the avenues should they WANT that is all good and fine. But to require a person who does not strive to do more in life than be a guard or work in a mill to go to calculus or College Prep English is a waste of resources and time. My father pushed me to go into college straight out of high school. I didn't want to go. I didn't even turn in any applications. He chose my college, which was a private college (MORE MONEY!) and made me send in the application. I hated it. I was always book smart, but I knew I didn't belong there until I knew what I wanted to do with my life. Not what someone else wanted me to do. This small factor was the difference of me being successful in college or, as I had, dropping out. I am still paying on an education that I didn't want and got nothing from.

+Mindy Wolff Mennonite families still do it the old way. They only go to school through 8th grade and then they go into the family business or another family's business. Some go on to higher education, but most choose to learn how to make a life instead. Public schools used to train people to go into factories or on to college and into corporate life. Since they've offshored the factories and a lot of the corporate jobs are either offshore or filled by H1B Visa holders (foreign nationals working in the U.S. as indentured servants who have to do what they're told or risk deportation), the educational system's main goal seems to be to convince people they aren't adults until they're 40 or so. In my generation, students wanted their driver's license the day they turned old enough and couldn't wait to get a job. Out of the 3 young men I knew locally, none of them even wanted a license or a car; never held a job; still lived at home at 18, 19 and 21 and spent their time playing video games. For the record, we are adults when we hit puberty or shortly thereafter which should happen around 15-16. (Hormone disruptors in the environment and "food" and city water have changed that.) There is no reason why we couldn't still be adults by at least 16. Many 12-14 year olds are mature enough to take on serious responsibility - or at least they used to be. My Mennonite friend's son built his first octagon gazebo completely by himself at 13. Parents used to teach their children valuable skills like building things, growing and harvesting food, cooking from scratch, baking, sewing, canning and preserving food. Time to get back to that and there is a huge resurgence in interest. (More good ways to make extra money from your homestead teaching others. )
